A step by step video on how to program a smart key remote fob to a 2013 - 2016 Chevrolet Malibu.

1. Using the driver's door, turn the key counterclockwise to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds.The Driver Information Center(DIC) displays REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.
2. Wait for 10 minutes until the DIC displays PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN, then press the ENGINE START/STOP button. (You may have to open and close drivers door to see the DIC display). The DIC display will again show REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.
3. Repeat Step 2 two additional times. After the third time all previously known transmitters will no longer work with the vehicle. The DIC displays PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN, then press the ENGINE START/STOP button. (You may have to open and close drivers door to see the DIC display). Remaining remote key fobs can be relearned during the next steps. The DIC display should now show READY FOR REMOTE # 1.
4. Place the new smart key fob in the transmitter pocket in the center console .
5. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. When the transmitter is programmed, the DIC display will show that it is ready to program the next remote key fob.
6. Remove the smart key fob from the transmitter pocket and press unlock or lock on the transmitter.
To program additional transmitters, repeat Steps 4-6. When all additional transmitters are programmed, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for approximately 12 seconds to exit programming mode.

This worked good for my 2017 Chevy Malibu Premier! Took like 40mins to do, wish it was a faster process!!!! I had one transmitter and 2 cut keys. Just bought a transmitter from ebay for about $35, did this process and worked like a charm. Will need to reprogram new and your old key! If not the auto theft deterrent system message will pop up.

Hello thanks for the video by the way. All of the buttons work on the key fob, but the dash still says remote not detected and to put key in transmitter pocket I can lock and unlock doors and even the remote start works but the car for some reason still say key not detected. Do you think I should do it over again?

Worked for my 2018 Chevy Malibu LT only thing is when I only did the one new key fob afterwards the service theft deterrent system message came up and the light on so it took me a little bit to go back through but this time I did both my new and old key fob and the message and light went off 👍👍

Yes a 2018 requires at least 2 keys be successfully programmed or the theft deterrent system is triggered

Omg you posted this a few years ago and saved me today. I changed the remote batteries on this newer car and freaked out when I couldn’t open it. Almost had to call the dealership and pay an arm and a leg just to reprogram it. So thankful! 🙏🏼

This whole remote should program in at the same time so there may just be an issue with that button on the fob or the trunk release itself

Great video, procedure seems simple enough. Got a question for ya - I just bought an '18 Malibu, it came with 1 working fob. So far it seems like there are procedures to follow if you have zero, or two working fobs. I was wondering, is there an option to program a second fob given that I've already got the one working?

Yes you are correct, in your owners manual your will notice those are the only two options for programming procedures. However, you can use this procedure, you just need to reprogram in your working fob. If you look at the steps in the description box, or your owners manual, you will repeat steps 4-6 for each remote.

This is the owner of Chevy Malibu in 2019. I bought a compatible key because I lost one of the two keys. And when I set the key, Q 1> it recognizes it as number 3. Is there a way to set this key to 1 or 2? Q2> The door open close button works normally, but the trunk open/close and horn buttons are switched, is there a way to solve this?

Followed the directions for a 2021 Chevy Malibu. Everything works as shown except that after programming the 1st remote, a message appears that it's ready for Remote 2. It will not allow you to reprogram the same remote, and if you don't have another remote, you will need to press the start stop button for 12 seconds again to exit the programming mode.

@@PYR-Auto Hi, I was able to get a much lesser price after market 2nd remote, it worked like a charm! Funny thing is, it then asked for a 3rd remote, so the newer model cars are equipped to program more remotes. However, with this message, it did not insist on programming #3, so once I exited the program, I no longer got the message and everything works beautifully! Thanks so much!

@@adilsonalfama2290 Yes, the car asks for the 2nd key every time you start it, just have to exit program mode to start the car. Bit of a pain, so got an after market fob for $25 and it all worked out.

I like your video but the emblem on the middle of the steering wheel looks like a Cadillac not a Chevy. The emblem on the middle of my steering wheel actually looks like a Chevy not a Cadillac. Also the pocket to place the transmitter in located in the center console is not there. I have a different pocket on the back side of the center console and the transmitter won't fit. Finally certain dash controls, turn signal indicator controls as well as steering wheel controls are completely different on my 2019 Chevy Malibu. If I could figure out how to attach pictures to my comment I would. Other than these inconsistencies, good video.

It is a Cadillac XTS in the video. The same procedure works on many different GM vehicles. The pocket in your center console that you are seeing on the backside is what you need to use. You can also find this procedure and see a diagram of the transmitter pocket in your owners manual. When performence the steps, my original keyfob was deleted from memory and the new key doesn't programmed and the process still show pendent. When i open the door with my emergency key the message appear on dasboard "add remote 1" and put new remote in transmitter pocket and press star/ stop nothing happen. Any suggestions? scanned i find this code B3031:00 and B3105:00

They original key fob will need to be reprogrammed during the procedure. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - you need to repeat steps 4-6 for your original remote after the new one. If the vehicle shows ready for "remote 1" but does not respond to the remote - there may be an issue with the remote you are trying to use. I would try programming the original remote as Remote 1 to determine that.

This will work on a 2019, however on a 2019 you have to program at least two keys during the procedure. The remote needs to match your vehicles options, the remote start fob will only work if your vehicle is set-up for remote start.

Hello I need help with my chevy Malibu 2012 (V300) EU version. I have only 1 Recognized transmitter (smartkey, keyless). How Can I program another one ? These instructions are only for vehicles built for the U.S. market. Unfortunately I do not have the programming information for vehicles built for use outside of the U.S.

With this procedure, you need to re-program any existing remotes during the procedure. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - you need to repeat steps 4-6 for the working key after the "new" key is programmed.

The remote needs to match the vehicles options. If you bought a remote with remote start then the dealership would need to add remote start in order for it to work.

My 2017 malibu is stuck in learning mode. After i hold the start button down for 12 sec the new fob will work but says *service theft deterrent system* and the little lock stays on the cluster. After I turn the car off and walk away for approximately 10-15min when I open the door it says *ready for remote 2* It will not start now. But if I hold the start button for 12 sec it will allow it to start again. Anyone have an idea?

I had a 2019 Traverse that I traded for a 2017 Malibu. The Malibu had only 1 fob so we kept 1 of the Traverse key fobs hoping to reprogram it. I can get the original fob to program with this process but it doesn’t seem to work on the Traverse fob as a 2nd one. Are they compatible?

Can I use a FOB from a different vehicle to reprogram for my 2017 Chevy? It is the same. For some reason I received 3 Fobs with my new Equinox. I’ve lost my Fob for my Malibu.

No - these fobs lock to a vehicle once programmed and have to be "flashed" by someone with the correct equipment before they can be programmed again

Some vehicle only show the message for a few seconds right when the door is opened. You might try just continuing with the procedure on just go off of the time.

What if you were provided a key and the additional key was never received and you wanted a second key ?

You can use this procedure to program a second key, you just need to re-program your original during the procedure. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - you need to repeat steps 4-6 for your original remote after the new is programmed.

No. There is no onboard procedure for the remote for a 2005 Malibu, however you can program the ignition key your self. Some vehicles only show the message for a few seconds right when the door is opened or closed. Also, this will only work on push button start Malibu's that were built for the U.S. market.

I can do it with two keys. is that I want to have one to carry it around. and another as a copy if I lose the first one.

What year is your Malibu? This video is for the the 2013 - 2016 - if your Malibu is newer than 2016 it is the same procedure but you will need to program at least two fobs during the procedure or else the theft deterrent light will activate. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video, you need to repeat steps 4-6 for each remote after the first remote is programmed

All u gotta do is hold the start button for 12 second again ...and then hit the brake and start it up like normal

I did this process for my 2017 Malibu. Once I was done I tried to turn the car on 3 times and turned on. I just tried it hours later and the car won’t turn on and on the dash it says ready for remote number two so I’m confused on what to do
