In this episode of gardening tips, I show you how to propagate bird of paradise plants and how to get bird of paradise plants to flower along with tips on bird of paradise plant care ( How to grow bird of paradise plants)
I give step-by-step instructions on how to propagate bird of paradise plants while sharing my tips on how to get the bird of paradise plants to flower or bloom.
Bird of paradise plants get their name due to the resemblance of the flowers to birds of paradise and they make a striking addition to any garden.
I have been growing bird of paradise plants ( Strelitzia reginae ) also known as crane flowers since moving to France, in the early years I made the mistake of not bringing the bird of paradise inside early enough in the Autumn and lost the plants to frost.
Birds of paradise plants will not tolerate frost and if you are lucky enough that frost does not kill the plant it will definitely stop the plant from flowering the following summer, so my top tip is do not allow the birds of paradise to be outside when frost is expected.
There are 5 species of birds of paradise and they are native to South Africa and the plants love a sunny position in your garden.
After I lost my initial bird of paradise I did go out and buy another and over the last 10 years through the propagation of the bird of paradise plants I now have 6 plants of which all flower.
The key to getting your bird of paradise to flower is to allow the plant to get pot bound - my father complains that his bird of paradise growing in the UK has split its plastic pot and roots are spilling out and I have to remind him that it's perfect - don't re-pot it and you will get more flowers!
I have heard that in Kew Gardens in the UK they have a spectacular bird of paradise plant that flowers every year profusely that is totally pot bound.
Whenever I do propagate the bird of paradise plant by division I am fully aware that the new plants will not flower the next summer because the plant has too much room in its new pot, the second summer arrives and the pot is now packed solid with a root system then that bird of paradise will flower.
In this video, I show you exactly how I have propagated the bird of paradise plants by division over the last 10 years without any failures - all the bird of paradise plants have survived the division and flourish afterward.
Here are my top tips on bird of paradise plant care:
1: Never allow the bird of paradise plant to be outside when frost is expected or through the cold winter months.
2: Locate the bird of paradise plant in full sun.
3: Water the bird of paradise frequently.
4: Bird of paradise plants thrive in rich soil so during the growing season feed once per week with liquid plant feed.
5: Bird of paradise plants enjoy being pot bound which encourages flower formation so only repot when either the pot is totally broken or as in this video the roots are bulging from the top of the pot which restricts watering.
6: Every spring when I move the bird of paradise plants from their winter home to the garden I perform a general tidy-up, removing any dead stalks and weeding the pots so the bird of paradise plant has no competition for water or feed.
I hope you enjoyed this gardening video entitled " How to Propagate Bird of Paradise Plants - How to get Bird of Paradise Plants to Flower"
We love growing bird of paradise plants in our garden and I love the idea of getting free plants through propagation by division.
The birds of paradise plants along with our Cannas, Bananas, and Cordylines really turns our garden into a sub-tropical paradise.
2022 Update: All the Bird of paradise plants that were divided ( Propagated ) in this video are flourishing and now with so many Bird of Paradise plants I will no longer propagate them and just enjoy my Bird of Paradise plants pot-bound to encourage plenty of flowers.

BOP can actually take frost, not extensive freezes, but a couple light frosts can actually induce flowering on BOP!!!

I gave my sister a potted one , she lives in the panhandle of Florida. She planted in her backyard and it bloomed for the first 3 years and now has quit . They do get frost ones or twice it never effected it has grown to be enormous and produced side plants . I have tried to get one but the roots seem to be pretty deep . I just wished it bloom again. Thank you for the video. It is very beautiful where you live .

Thank you so much for watching, I think I would plant the pot in the ground to keep it potbound they do seem to flower better when pot bound but your sister did well getting it to flower for 3 years planted directly in the ground, it might have survived the frost but it might have been the frost that stopped it from blooming this year

@r11hno

We have always had new canes ( Leaves) coming up - it might take a while a year of two if the plant has been split, it can take a few years to recover. We make sure after splitting we water everyday and feed once per week during the time the plants are outside.

@@r11hno maybe my terminology is incorrect. I always have new leaves on the two remaining stalks, but I started with four stalks - all with a bunch of leaves - and after I moved, two stalks declined rapidly and fully died away, including their leaves. Now I only have two stalks that are growing leaves.

I have been having a debate with my husband on how much root bounding is good and he keeps having me repot it! I think this video solves the debate! But do you know if being root bound will help it flower if it is growing inside all year round? I used to take mine out for the summer, but it suffered terribly from the heat. Now I keep it inside and it grew amazing this summer, but I would like to hope it will flower one day.
@r11hno

I only repotted these to make the video - I would have preferred to have left them a few more years to get more flowers but in 2 or 3 years time I will have more flowers. in the summer months if its hot I will water twice per day they like a lot of water

Hi, how long do the BOP usually take to flower please?
@r11hno
@r11hno 2 года назад
Once in a new pot it normally takes the second season to get the first flowers - if left to become pot bound they flower more
@aazz9714
@aazz9714 2 года назад
So new plants pop up in the same pot next to the original one after some time?
@r11hno
@r11hno 2 года назад
Yes they do and you just then need to divide them but its always best to leave them pot bound for the flowers

hey Mark...watching you from Ontario, Canada and I'm so glad that I found you! I've had a BoP for almost 30 years and it has never grown more than 5 leaves. I now find out that they like to be potbound....so I set about repotting it into a much smaller pot...and discovered that it's been growing a root system instead of growing leaves! LoL When I rolled the huge pot to loosen the soil, I broke several roots that that were at the very bottom of the pot - whoops! Hopefull my plant forgives and survives the repotting but...what can I do with the roots that broke off?? Can they be potted up to produce new plants? I've got them wrapped in some wet newspaper for now - praying that you see this comment and reply with an answer really soon! Thanks in advance Mark!

Good morning, your existing plant should be fine as you see I cut through the root system to propagate, I have never tried repotting any separate cut roots

How long will take for roots to heal and grow normally? And how often do we need to water after propagation?
@r11hno
@r11hno 2 года назад
Once I separated the plant and repotted I water straight away and then water every other day - they do like alot of water in the summer months and it would be ideally at the start of spring once any danger of frost is over that you would split the plant. I would have left the plants longer in there pots before splitting to encourage more flowers and get more pot bound but I wanted to make the video so did it a few years early at the expense of a few years of no flowers but I do have more plants now

How do you split them from the ground if they're growing in the ground please
@r11hno

Ive only had plants grown in pots - I would try from the most exterior and use a fork to prise them away, might be worth digging a hole on the outside edge before using the fork

Someone used a saw to cut the new piece off. Cut slightly toward the main plant base to collect enough rhizome for the new plant, without hurting the parent plant. Dug out the new plant section with leaf, rhizome, & roots. Replanted the new plant.

I live in NY. We leave our banana palms in the ground with no protection. They do die back to the ground but they come right back up every year.

There is no other way to cut the plant - a spade does not get through the roots, you could just repot into a larger pot and your plant will grow without problems I always take the opportunity of repotting to get additional plants - thanks for watching

Dang I can only find one channel (Maria's garden) that will show how to propagate from a huge plant in the ground
@r11hno
@r11hno 2 года назад
I would imagine that a large plant in the ground will still have shoots growing apart from one another and the same process would work cutting away a portion with roots attached
@spectraldragonfly28
@spectraldragonfly28 Месяц назад
So long as the new section has at least one healthy leaf, rhizome, & roots.
