Hi everyone,
In this video I share with you how to propagate large cactus cuttings.
This video has been highly requested for a long time and I was finally able to purchase some very large cactus cuttings - Featured in the video are large cuttings of Trichocereus Spachianus.
This cactus is a very strong and fast growing cactus.
These cuttings will be allowed to dry and callous for a minimum of 8 weeks before planting.
I hope you enjoy the video!
Thanks for watching & Happy Gardening!

So glad I watched this before sticking a large cutting directly into a large pot. Thank you!! Edit: I have repeated this process on numerous large cactus and jade cuttings and success rates have gone way up. Less root rot problems. Also switched to a more loamy soil with less vermiculite so it dries a bit faster.

First time to watch. Thanks for the details. So many tutorials are a "Cut the cactus, put it in the soil, water when dry." sort of instructions. Leaves a little bit of details out. Thanks for the tips.

Great to see this. It’s confirmation of what I’ve done on instinct with a mature Astro myriostigma I bought from eBay. Basically, the root ball detached on opening the plant from its packing and there was some rot extending about 1/2 way up the plant vascular system. One chance to save it: cut well back to as much clean tissue as possible. Dipped cut parts in yellow sulphur powder, then left to callus for about a month. Now I’ve stood the “cutting” on a grit/sand/ compost (40:40:20) mix and left him under the staging. Please note: I do emphasise that the seller was very happy to reimburse me, as I contacted them with photos immediately I received the plant and saw the problem.

Why does everyone think they need to dry out their cuttings before planting them? I've never had any issues at all with just shoving them straight into soil. They are hardy barstards. Also they root way quicker in soil and sun.

I have a 3 foot arm on a 12 ft saguaro that I am wanting to replant. The main saguaro is being removed due to some kind of black causing bacteria on trunk. The 3ft arm has a bend toward bottom. If I cut arm above bend should that be safe when replanting so it will grow straight?

Or should i wait until next season in spring time? I have a huge cactus cutting waiting to dry up so i can put it in a pot to grow roots. Would be great to get an answer. Thank you ❤

Hey! I usually pot up cuttings in spring / during active growth. Wont hurt it to sit in a micro pot for a little longer if it's not actively growing. If you have good root formation you can pot it up into its normal pot.

@ladyrox
@ladyrox 3 года назад
Hey there great information thanks, have a few further questions... Would this technique work on a 2 metre San Pedro Cactus and when micro potting would scoria rock work, or does it need to be gravel? ? Also it will be winter here soon so I'm wondering whether it'd be best to keep the cactus upright inside for the drying off process (sunny position / warm house) or would it be better on a covered deck where it should mostly stay dry (unless stormy weather blows in some rain)? ... Thanks :)
@87walker
@87walker 3 года назад
This technique works on all column cacti. I consider scoria to be a type of gravel so yes will work just fine, winter is not a good time for cuttings though. Spring & summer are best. If you have already done the cutting, it is best stored right way up in a sunny spot and keep the base dry. Happy Gardening!

I have already cut off all his pups for replanting, but I was wondering if it was possible to cut off the whole cactus above where he starts getting really skinny, and replant him? I've had him for many years and I am very attached. I dont want him to die🥺 but I want him to be able to stand like he used to. Standing up, he is a little over a foot tall. Cacti can be removed from the ground fairly easily. Try to retain a reasonable sized rootball, making sure that any roots that are damaged are cut cleanly. Allow to dry for 4-6 weeks and then you can re plant. Good luck & Happy Gardening!
