Some Catus prills aren't that sharp and can be picked up by hand. But anyways if you don't squeeze it or apply to much pressure when you're picking them up it won't prick you

The needles from the babies aren't sharp at all. They break off with the slightest touch. As they mature and the needles turn brownish, that's what you have to watch out for. The white coloured ones aren't usually not sharp.

Not sure why someone would want to cut the top off. Know the growth habit of your cactus. Some make arms, or multi growths from the top.

Your cactus clearly shows the symptoms of low light exposure on the top of the plant and on the buds hence it grows unusually vertically so it could reach light as it is programmed to do so.

yes it does! I was actually trying to artificially create those symptoms so it would give me good growth point to take a cutting. :) Trying to make the cactus split into a Y

What do you do when you live somewhere where there is not a lot of light though? I love cactuses but the ones I have are so deformed and grew weird and skinny at the top. I'm thinking of cutting it like in this video and trying again...

Roxanne try a grow light or other artificial light. Im pretty sure grow lights are a very good alternative to natural sunlight.

I dont know if you are familiar with moon cactus, but I was intrested in propogating the one that I currently own, and I was curious if I would be able to graft the cactus cuttings to the top if a cactus like the one that you cut the top off from, or if I should just graft it to the dragonfruit plant that most people do. Thank you!

I'm going to try this with a cows horn I bought over the summer. Not sure what happened but the main cactus has begun to die but there are 3 shoots off the main stem that I'm gonna try to save.

A cactus mix. Chunky with sand & gravel added. You can wait awhile after potting to water.

What happens if you plant the pups right after you cut them off, without letting them dry? I'm just wondering the science behind the drying then planting. I would have thought you'd want to plant them moist. I have a mammilaria backebergiana (idk how to spell) that has several large pups and I'm afraid I'll hurt him(his name is Jeffery) by removing them, and I don't want them to die if I do, but I don't know if keeping them on will hurt him anyway. He's leaning really bad right now and I've put up several paint sticks and a cup to keep him from falling over 😧 I've had him for so many years, and through many moves around the country, I don't want anything to happen to him!

hi ripley, hope you get to read this. i potted a cactus cutting, 3.5 inches long, about 1 month ago, waiting for the end of the cutting to become calloused and dry. It was potted in a 3.5 inch pot; but after 2-3 weeks, it hadn't developed any roots and came out easily with no resistance. It hadn't started to develop any roots. Any ideas why this happened ? I would keep away from watering for a week and then lightly watering after that. Then resume normal watering once they are a couple months established.

Shay Bäcklund water the pot thoroughly only when the soil is dried. Let the water drip through the holes in the pot, and make sure it gets plenty of sunlight afterwards so the pot won’t stay soggy.

I know this is an old video, but hopefully you will see this. If a pup of a Torch Cactus has a very hardy root system do I still need to dry the wound? If so, should I be concerned about the wound on my mother plant? We have been through a lot together, can't loose her.

dry before you transplant the cutting but don't worry about the mother plant too much, just keep it clean and dry and you'll be set!

Wisconsin Wonder Garden thank you I went ahead and planted 2 with very strong roots but didn't water them. I let the other 5 dry out. They seem to be ok, and the mother plant seems to be doing fine as well. I watered the ones I put in soil a couple days after the wounds on the other had callused. I will try to keep you updated thank you

Typically this happens within 5-9 days but it depends on the relative humidity and temperature of your home as well. That is why I just let people know to go based off of touch to tell when its dry.

hello! just make sure that it doesnt get too much direct sunlight right away or it will burn, and you also want to make sure that the area doesnt stay too moist or it will cause rotting. Just like a wound on our bodies, it need to heal.

Which part? Those are actually two different cacti grafted together! in case you didn't know. They are both quite similar in technique for propagation though.
