I’ll show you how to propagate pothos Epipremnum aureum devil’s Ivy, money plant by stem cuttings. Also how to propagate leafless stems.
Take a long vine from a plant that has at least 5-6 leaves. Cut the stem close to the edge of the pot between two leaves. Don’t be afraid to prune your pothos. It will push out new growth from where you cut it snd also shoot new stems. Pruning can help it get bushier
On the stem there is a leaf and node where leaf is growing. There is a node wherever there is a leaf on the stem. Under the node there are brown crusty things, those are called aerial roots. New roots will grow from these aerial roots. Pothos also use aerial roots to attach them to surface when climbing.
Cut the stem between every leaf leaving one inch on each side and get rid of the extra stem. Take warm tap water ( not hot ) in a vase, cup or glass. It doesn’t have to be clear. I use clear containers so I can check on root progress all the time. Then gather all the cutting and put them in water. Make sure all the nodes are submerged in water.
Make sure to change water every few days or once a week. It needs needs water and oxygen to grow. Fresh tap water has oxygen in it. You keep these cutting in a warm place and in bright indirect light. You can use heat mat if you have. I never tried that.
Roots will starting to grow within two weeks. Sometimes it can take longer in winter. They need warmth.
Once roots are one to two inches long, you can transfer them in soil. You can keep them growing in water for years if you like. You just have to change the water and add some liquid fertilizer every two months. When transferring in soil you can use regular potting mix and add some perlite in it. It will keep the soil airy. Pothos like to be dry out completely between waterings. But you need to keep the cutting moist for 4-6 weeks or until you see new growth.
If you have hard time keeping them moist just place the pot in clear glass or planting container which can be closed. Then keep it where it gets morning sunlight or few hours of any sunlight. It can stay moist for weeks. If for any reason you LR cutting are not doing well. You can take them out of soil rinse the soil completely and put them back in water. Once they are doing well in water maybe after few weeks, you can transplant them in soil again. If pothos leaves are getting they are getting too much water or it could be pests. If they are droopy that means they need more water.
Pothos can grow in medium to low light light. But they grow faster and get bigger leaves when they get more light. They grow really well in morning sun like east facing window. But you can also put them few feet away from south of west facing windows.
You can fertilize them every two months or whenever you see they are growing, you can fertilize them. Make sure to dilute the fertilizer further.
If for some reason your pothos leaves have died off on the plant but you still have heathy stems, you can still propagate them. They will grow slowly but they will get new leaves.
Pothos are very easy to grow and propagate. If you are a beginner start with pothos.
