How To Properly Cut A Cigar:
Most people are familiar with plastic cigar cutters that are purchased for a few dollars or given for free at a cigar lounge. Whilst they're functional, they're quite flimsy and may be quite dull, which can crush rather than cut cigars.
[02:22] Straight Guillotine Cut:
The most popular cut is the straight guillotine. However, before we explore this further, it's important to know where to cut your cigar.
You should always aim for just above the cap along the shoulder of the cigar's head. Any lower and this may cause the cigar to unravel. Therefore, it's important to leave a bit of flag leaf around the cigar's circumference.
However, even though you should take care to cut the cigar, don't be too hesitant either as being too slow could crush the cigar. So you should cut with a decisive snip.
What we love about using the scissors over typical cigar cutters is that it provides a greater level of visual control so your cuts can be more precise.
[05:20] V-Cutters:
V-cutters are sometimes the subject of controversy as some people dislike them whilst others swear by them.
Firstly, cheaper V-cutters can become blunt quite quickly so they can actually crush rather than cut. However, a quality cigar cutter works well and cuts out a wedge from your cigar's head.
Some say that this provides a quality draw and prevent bits of tobacco falling into your mouth. Others also praise the way that the head collects tar rather than it being inhaled for a cleaner smoke.
However, there are some that argue that the accumulation of tar can make the smoke quite bitter.
V-cutters are considered to be easy as there is a guard, which prevents you cutting too low down the wrapper.
If you're feeling brave or feel the draw it too tight, you can cut another wedge sideways for an x-cut!
[7:20] Punch Cuts:
Another convenient cutting method is by using a punch. This creates a small hole in the head without much effort.
It's quite handy for large cigars as they're not constrained by ring gauge. Some even come with different sizes so you can use them according to your cigar's size.
Furthermore, they can be fixed to a key chain, which means that they're a very portable option for carrying with you at all times.
Like v-cuts, you also have a build-up of tar, which is very much a question of personal preference.
[09:27] Cutting Figurados & Odd-Shaped Cigars
Cutting torpedoes and perfectos can be intimidating but it's quite easy with a little practice.
Straight cuts are the best type of way to cut a figurado. You can either cut them straight or at an angle depending on the draw that you want.
Charles-Philippe likes cutting his figurados at an angle for more draw whilst Paul Anthony prefers a perpendicular cut.
With a longer cap, you have greater flexibility for customising your cut's draw. You can do a high cut then work your way down until you're happy.
[10:53] DIY Cutting Methods:
Here we discuss methods for cutting a cigar without a cutter such as using your teeth, a matchstick, a pocket knife or even a straight razor or blade.

My absolute favorite cutter is the Xicar MTX-Multitool. It's super compact, it's well made, and it gives you the ability and the precision to open up every shape and size of cigar. If you have a cylindrical shaped cigar, you can just cut away the very end bit of the cap, behind the filler, without actually cutting into the filler, and that way you could open up even a 100 ring gage cigar perfectly if you want, and If you do it that way, you put absolutely no pressure on the wrapper, therefore It can't get damaged. Only on Shortfiller Cigars I prefer a punch cut, to prevent the small tobacco bits from getting into my mouth.

The Multitool is also an awesome option! Paul Anthony generally used the XO (review coming to the channel soon) but I know he's got the Multitool that he alternates with from time to time. Indeed, the Multitool is great for getting a very precise cut without being limited by larger ring gauges. Rafael

Thanks RT! Yes there are many methods, and within each method there are many tools performing essentially the same action. As always the human imagination is endless.... As for the best method, it's trial and error for your personal favorite, and may change over time, type of cigar, etc... So enjoy! All the best - Paul

I suggest one other cigar cutter, the Swiss Army Knife, the Cigar 79. If you carry a pocket knife for having the convince to cut open envelopes or boxes and you are enjoy smoking cigars, this is a great tool to have in one of your pockets. Victorinox, the company that makes Swiss Army Knives, also makes a pocket knife with three different sized punch cutters. Hi Duaine, I'm very fond of my Victorinox that I've had since I was 10 and I did notice this model recently. Would you recommend it, then? Best, CP

Yes, the Cigar 79 is in my pocket most of the time. It is the cutter that is most handy. I find the cigar tool on the knife to make very good cuts that are clean.

I’ve got this too and it works really well- wasn’t aware of the punch cutters they made but will look for that (I never use punches but any excuse to spend money on objects is too good to pass 😂)

A razor works well but rather than "breadknife" through I would tend to cut around, taking of the top of the cap/wrapper, then saw through the innards to get a nice flat cut

Is it possible to use the punch at a sharp angle to mimic the v-cut?
@Bespokeunit
@Bespokeunit 2 года назад
It's not ideal but yes, you can use the punch in that manner. Some folks even use their teeth to rip the cap off their cigars so your suggestion isn't so unorthodox in comparison. Whatever gets you smoking them... I guess Rafael

Licking the cigar before cutting it is like #1 on the newbie list. No-one can borrow your scissors then, and the other people in the lounge had to whitness that. Terrible.
@Bespokeunit

Yeah, I'd suggest keeping that practice in the comfort of your own home. Rafael

My question is .....how does your cigar taste after that stunt?
@tankscrittersandurbanhomes5579
I use a butterfly cutter. Cost $12 5 years ago and it's still strong, sharp, and smooth with zero issue. Is there any reason a person would want to switch to a $50 cutter? Is it just status or name brand? Or is there truly a benefit? This is not a troll question this is an honest question. I smoke with several friends and we all use the same price range cutters.
@Bespokeunit
@Bespokeunit 5 лет назад
Hi there, I'm actually impressed that your $12 butterfly cutter continues to perform for so long! You'll have to tell me the brand! I think it's like any gadget, really. The objective is the same but some are more elaborate than others. I think that there are certainly benefits to more premium cutters in terms of cutting smoothness but if you're happy with yours, that's absolutely fine too. Best, CP
@tankscrittersandurbanhomes5579
@@Bespokeunit sorry for the delay. I feel terrible. And I was incorrect. It is an Ave Maria by Xikar and it was $32 it now goes for $40
@Bespokeunit
@Bespokeunit 5 лет назад
No worries, thanks for the update! I'm a little sad to learn that it wasn't $12 in the end. Would've loved to have got my hands on it. Xikar are generally pretty reliable and offer some of the best relatively affordable options along with Colibri. Best, CP
