Best Cigar Hygrometers:
The first thing to remember when buying a new hygrometer is that it must be calibrated in order to provide accurate readings. You can do this using Boveda's calibration kits, which are much easier and more accurate than the salt test.
For the purposes of this video, we left each hygrometer in a Boveda 75% calibration bag in order to see how close their readings were to their actual environment.
[03:10] Analogue Hygrometers:
Firstly, note that the analogue hygrometer we tested was a full 11% RH off when being calibrated. Although this is common, they are renowned for quickly losing their accuracy after being calibrated too.
However, they are easy to set and simply require a screwdriver in the back to turn the dial to the correct reading. They're also very cheap.
Nevertheless, aside from the aesthetic value, analogue hygrometers have little use compared to other, more modern alternatives.
[07:11] Digital Hygrometers
At the very least, you should own a digital hygrometer in order to accurately read the relative humidity in your humidor. These are very easy to calibrate and require only turning the knob when using a calibration kit.
We're particularly fond of the HygroSet II, which is relatively accurate out of the box but we can't stress enough the importance of calibrating.
Furthermore, they're quite cheap and tend to cost around $20.
[09:30] Smart Hygrometers
Today, you can buy smart devices that allow you to check the humidity in your humidor by simply checking your phone. In this video, we explore the offerings from Boveda, Sensorpush and Cigsor.
Each of these have their own advantages and drawbacks. Nevertheless, they are a fantastic companion for your cigar storage solutions.
The SensorPush reads 74.8%, which means that there is only a 0.2% variance. Note that out of the box, they state that the device has a 3-4% variance.
We find that the Boveda Smart Sensor offers the best value for money as the starter kit comes with a calibration kit as well as several humidity packs. Additionally, its retail price is the same as the SensorPush.
Its only downside is that the Boveda Smart Sensor is only a bluetooth device and doesn't come with native WiFi options. Nevertheless, you can make your own gateway with a dormant device at home.

As for the calibration, you can run a 2-step calibration process, which uses two kits from Boveda. The result is a more accurate reading.
Out of the box, the Boveda Smart Sensor has a -/+4% variance. With a 1-step calibration, it narrows it down to 2.5% and a 2-step calibration gets you down to 1.5%, which makes it the most accurate available.
Finally, the Cigsor is the only hygrometer that can't be calibrate. Nevertheless, it is calibrated in the factory with a tolerance of +/-2%. However, the one we tested was only 0.8% off.
However, the Cigsor is only WiFi enabled and has no bluetooth. Therefore, you can use it only in a location with a WiFi connection, which may be difficult if storing your cigars at a lounge or golf club.
Additionally, the Cigsor has a subscription service after the first year in order to use all of the app's features.
Finally, our favourite was the Boveda for its value for money, accuracy and ease of use.
