We all want to keep our conservations until winter, or even until spring. And an important role here is played by the ability to properly sterilize cans and lids. Before canning, all containers must be thoroughly disinfected. There are many ways to sterilize cans. I have chosen some of the easiest methods that can be done at home quickly and simply.
Useful tips:
1. Carefully check the glass container for chips, notches, cracks. It is better not to use imperfect cans and bottles for preservation.
2. Check the quality of the covers when buying. The screw caps should not be bent and without scratches. Covers with elastic bands should also be perfect and with inserted elastic bands.
3. Do not use chemicals to wash cans, they are poorly washed off and harmful to our health. Lids and jars can be washed with soda, dry mustard or natural household soap. To wash the cans, you need to use a new clean sponge.
4. Sterilize the jars immediately before preservation.
Method 1 - Over steam:
Time:
Small cans should stand over steam for about 10 minutes
cans of 1-2 liters. - 15 minutes
cans of 3 liters and more - 20 minutes
The lids need to be boiled for 10 minutes
Method 2 - in the oven:
Time (from the moment of preheating the oven):
0.5 l. - 0.75 l. - 10 minutes
1 l. - 1.5 l. - 15 minutes
2 l. - 20 minutes
3 l. - 25 minutes
You need to put the jars in a cold oven.
You can put the jars in the oven with the neck up, down or put them on the side.
Sterilization in the oven should take place at t not less than 120 and not more than 150 gr.
In the oven, you can not sterilize the lids with an elastic band - it will simply melt.
Method 3 - in the microwave:
Time:
5 minutes for all cans at maximum capacity.
For one small jar - 3-4 minutes.
The lids cannot be sterilized in the microwave.
The lids should be boiled separately in a saucepan for 10 minutes.
