How to Prune a Fruiting Sabara Jaboticaba - in 15 Gallon Container

The newest addition to the Plinia family, a mature fruiting Jabuticaba. In this video I do an initial prune to remove dead limbs and to promote better fruit set and to train the new growth of the tree. Age of the tree is estimated to be 20 years old or more according to the previous owner. This normally would result in a much larger tree, but the climate where this tree was growing is much drier than what the tree would prefer and the container size also limits growth.

Good job, Shiloh. I find it therapeutic to prune. So rewarding as well when the jaboticaba responds to it and rewards you with new growth.

I am the same way. It is always a little scary to prune a jaboticaba, but after I get over the first couple cuts, something happens and I go into a meditative state and prune away.

i finally got my first pair of these double anvil pruners and oh my god they are the most comfortable, strong, and easy to squeeze pruners i have ever owned!

That’s the tiniest 20 year old Sabara in the world. But, looks like it’s fruiting very well for that size. I have an 8-10 yr old Sabara in a 25g that just fruited for the first time in the spring. The plant is 50% bigger than this one.

Yes this one does seem rather small for it's age, but because of where it was growing, I can see it growing even slower than normal and was probably without enough water for most of its life.

I have a 9 year old tree that is 3m high, densely foliaged canopy and was loaded with fruit for the first time this year when i accidentally left sprinkler on for 2 hours. ( oops). We live in dry tropics region, so they definately love good water. It also has partial shade from hot afternoon sun and is in protected courtyard.

What is the best time of year to do this? Your post shows 3mos ago, but that would be winter, if so…mine just fruited a few a month ago but I’m in Central Florida…

You can prune most times of the year. Especially if you are pruning back dead branches. Selective pruning new growth is best when done when you first notice the new growth. This way you save the plant from using the energy growing a branch you are going to prune off later.

Was the fruit good? Waiting for my tree to fruit as well; to finally have the chance to try it for the first time.

Hi I hope you get fruit soon, I can’t forget the beautiful memorable moment I seen my first ever flower. From my experience it’s best not to let it dry out in spring/summer in temperate climate, they love the heat with good water & naturally bloom + set fruit in the Brazil monsoon season.

Yeah the fruit was good. I picked it a few days too early so it would be even better if I waited. I have about a dozen on the tree almost perfectly ripe. My larger sabara looks like it wants to flower soon too!

I just bought a grafted Jaboticabo tree in 15 gallons container. I was wondering which month is the best time to prune it. And what kind of fertilizer would you recommend. Thanks! (BTW, I am in S California)

Is your 15 gallon producing fruit?

For me in Hawaii it may be different from where you live. I tend to prune trees when they need to be and less about what time of year. I mostly prune things that are growing in toward the trunk, crossing other larger branches, or if they are dying back. Most trees do best when you prune at the end of winter or beginning of spring before the new growth starts.

Needs acidic buffering in the soil to thrive.

I was given a yellow Jabo a couple years back. Not sure the scientific name but they said that it was yellow, hairy round fruit. They also said it’s kinda rare to get. Especially in Hawaii. Also I am in Keaau, big island. Where are you at?

Nice, you probably got a Myrciaria glazioviana. Also known as Cabelluda, it's very cool you got one. I hope it sets lots of fruit for you. My Cabelluda is still young so it only sets a dozen fruits or so. I am on Oahu.

I am not sure. I initially was certain the person who sold me it was wrong when he told me that. But based on the condition of the tree and the location it was on the island (very dry, no rain, low humidity) it is certainly possible; especially if it was in the same pot for 10 years and was only watered once a week or something. I have 3 year old seedlings that are just 3 inches tall and thin as a toothpick and I have 3 year old seedlings that are 6 foot tall and thick as a baseball bat. Difference between them is the conditions and care they were given. The tiny 3 year old seedlings were never given more root space to grow, barely given any water and often had to grow new leaves after drying out too much. The pot this tree is in requires it being watered at least once a day and often needs some additional watering(s). I will shoot an update video on how much better it is doing since I pruned it and have been giving it plenty of water and fertilizer. Thanks for watching!
