Now I remember, THIS video was how I found your gardening channel! Not the tomatoe one. But this is how I was suggested that one, which I also loved. But, now to the point. THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST HIBISCUS VIDEO I’ve come across here on RU-vid. This deserves to be the top suggestion. Great content! 👍🏼👌🏼✨👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼
What a great tutorial so helpful. My plants were getting tall and stringy. Now I know how to take care of them and keep them manageable. Thanks for talking in simple terms and explaining not just how, but also why. Great tutorial.
Thanks for great info! I am trimming the hibiscus on my patio to take their place in my front yard as focal point plants. Now, I think I can make them beautiful.
I have an indoor Hibiscus tree I bought in 2009. It stopped blooming after I over-pruned it the first time. It's been 11 years and not one single flower. I even had thoughts of maybe getting rid it soon because it is about 5 ft and takes up a lot of room. Well, lo and behold...I found 3 buds this week, one of which is about to flower! Will wonders ever cease!🥰🙌🌺 Your video is helpful, I will prune with more care from now on. Thank-you.💚
So much helpful information in this video. Thank you for thoroughly explaining proper pruning technique for Hibiscus so I can keep my plants looking sexy!
Thank you for this informative video! I live in Houston and had hibiscus planted last April. They are so tall and leggy. I want them to be full and compact full of blooms.
Thank you so much for the info! I have a bush in front of my porch that has survived two termite tentings, numerous "cold" snaps, droughts, root disruptions, painting, etc. and it just keeps growing. Every year, in mid to late November, it gets cut down almost bare. I do that so my porch Christmas decorations can be seen. Within a few weeks, it is growing out again. Right now, mid-May, I have a beautiful, healthy, bloom-busting bush. Now, I have to coax a couple of others that are just a few long skinny stems with beautiful flowers on the ends back into bushes. At least I now know that it isn't a coincidence that the front bush stays beautiful and full of blooms. (I always wondered.)
Great 👍 video. And trust me I’ve seen plenty. Yours is perfect and actually teaches us properly the do’s and don’ts of it all. I will follow your instructions. Loved the video b
Very helpful! Thanks. We bought our home near Mazatlan and there are 4 hibiscus that are out of control and I'm putting in several new hibiscus as well. This video is "one stop shopping" on how to prune these beautiful plants.
Thank you for the help , mines in a giant flower pot in Arkansas and has 9 flower blooming at the moment. I want to prune back soon . My bush is 11 years old . Was given from a friend dying of cancer
I know this video is from 4 years ago but that hibiscus looks exactly like mine. I've literally butchered mine and got bitten three times by a bee or wasp I'm not sure which. Thanks so much for your video it gave me confidence to cut my hibiscus right back, much appreciated 😊
I just got my first hibiscus plant last night. It's more like a tree. I got it home, repotted it, watered it, and this morning it's all wilted. I killed it already! Then I read that each bloom only lasts a day (no I didn't research before I bought). Thanks for your video. Liked and subscribed. Can't wait to learn more!
Sandra Arnold hi. So no worries. Hibiscus 🌺 are a very hardy, beautiful and grateful plant. Just water it and give it love. I too used to think 🤔 and was even told not to touch plants 🌱 cause I kill them. I now have 7ft hibiscus 🌺 and they are beautiful. So, keep up your hobbies and the hibiscus will reward you.
It may have been hardy hibiscus! Sometimes nurserys raise them under screens so you have to be supee careful when you bring it home! Probably just got shocked. Happened plenty to me
Thank you. Good information. I don't have one but my son had 2 that he "winters" indoors. He mentioned they were losing leaves.😮 So here I am! Researching on utube!
Thank you! We just bought a house with three hibiscus bushes. I love the flower but the bushes are very tall and sparse with lots of dead woody stems throughout and was unsure of how to maintain.
o used to grow tropical hibiscus when I was living in Singapore. When mine became infested with scale insects, I cut them right back to a stump. Sprayed everything and kept removing the leaves until I had sprayed about five times, first using a white oil spray (home-made, using 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil, half a teaspoon of Dawn dish soap, in two liters of water.) then, a couple of days later, after allowing the insects to dry and die out, I gave the whole thing a rinse with the spray of a hose, then another spray using vinegar in water, to help dissolve the remains of any pest insect debris. After I was sure that all of the scale insects were gone, I fertilized them and by month three, you couldn’t even tell that they’d been cut back at all, let alone to a stump!
I have a TH growing in a pot that I over winter in my house ( I live in Cleveland Ohio. It blooms all winter and hardly at all during the summer. It is also getting way too large for the pot. Can you tell me when and how to prune it so I can maintain a smaller size suitable for the pot and also how to get it’s bloom cycle back into the summer?
My plants are kept outside where we average 10 to 15 inches of snow every year. They never grow out from last years growth so I cut them all the way back to the ground every September. They bloom prolifically in early August and are done by the 20th. of the three colors I have, the pinks are coming back less every year.
Your video was very helpful. I do have a question though. I have a 5 1/2 year old tropical hibiscus I bring inside every fall. It's so huge now (my not knowing when and how to prune) it's really too big for the area I need to place it in. It's mid-September, zone 7b. I really need to do a hard prune but don't want to kill it. What do you suggest?
I just recently bought the plants... they’re small... I have transferred them into a medimum sized pot.... just wanted to know how often I should water them and how to take care of them
I do the same thing with my huge hibiscus such as grows like a weed almost every year turning to tree.. they get very tall and wide well they over a decade old actually doing this almost every year gonna do this over the weekend, and I have 20 of them along down my driveway.. only think I have major problem around the summer is aphas and white flies, spray and everything then come back week after sick of it
Good tips Thanks. My question is I live in El Paso is our heat & sun too hot for a hibiscus? I have my one under my patio in a container. It gets some sun & I will put in some banana peels.
I have a lot in full sun and some with medium sun and they love it. Definitely try out different spots for yours but pay extra attention while doing this so you don’t kill it off 🙂🙂
I live in a cold winter climate area ie. Toronto Ontario. I want to bring my tropical hybiscus plants indoors for the winter i.e. in the garage and encourage the plants to become dormant. What do I need to do to achieve this and have healthy plants that are ready to transplant back into the garden in the Spring? Thanks Paul Tomlinson
Great video. Very informative. My hibiscus have only mealy bug problem. I tried many methods It comes again & again. What to do . I am from India It very hot here
Do you have any recommendations for battling beetles? Last year, a swarm of Biblical proportions descended upon my hibiscus and mowed about 10 of them to the wood in just a couple of days. (They literally ignored every other thing in the yard), and insecticide didn't seem to phase them.
We have several young hibiscus plants in Florida at a house we bought. they are only couple of years old. but they have gotten tall. our lawn guy was trying to sell us shrub maintenance and was saying they should be cut back. but i noticed in this video you mentioned that plants under 5 years old dont need any pruning? would you recommend anything at this point for maintenance on these?
