How to prune raspberry canes in the spring / what to cut vs. what to let grow

I have several red raspberry patches around my home in Anchorage, Alaska, and in the spring once the newer canes start to sprout new bud growth, I know it's time to prune. Pruning raspberries is good to remove old, sharp bramble from the previous year that is now dead and won't produce any more berries. It's not needed, but it makes for an easier time picking and less thorny canes in the way. Once you do it once, it's easy to spot old, dead canes (= branches to cut and remove) versus new growth canes that will grow raspberries still.
