How to Prune Rosemary Part One by The Gardening Tutor - Mary Frost

Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) can be a challenge to prune when you have no idea how it grows or what to do. In part one you'll learn about how to keep your rosemary plant looking good for many years.
In part two, we'll review the pruning cuts. Here we are talking about the upright form of rosemary. There are slightly different instructions for pruning the prostrate variety of rosemary.
The most important thing to remember about pruning any rosemary plant is that it will not grow well from cuts made into bare stems. So, training from when your plants are young is going to help keep them lush and beautiful for a long time.

I would have never known all this about pruning rosemary if not for you! Heck, I didn't even know that you should prune rosemary, besides getting some sprigs for cooking. I am a new rosemary grower though, so I'm glad I watched.

Wonderful tips! Thank you. I just got a job as a gardener and the homeowner has the largest rosemary I have ever seen, and I came looking for ways to maintain it. Thank you for watching. Be careful about pruning too much at a time of year when the rosemary are not pushing growth. Much of the harder pruning I do on rosemary is in winter when they are really putting on new growth. You can do some pruning and bending of stems (if the stems are young and pliable) now though. Just save any big pruning for when they are pushing growth. Let us know how it goes! -mary

Thank you for the helpful information! I have a rosemary plant that is little over a year old and it has grown significantly, however it's starting to get a "bare" spot. I'm going to try these techniques to see if it becomes more "bushy"! I love this plant so much!

Thnx!!! My rosemary is a BEAST and is blocking a path. This explains why my previous pruning has resulted in more vigorous growth n my not pruning the top resulted in it being all scraggly.

Exactly Liz! Its like Fantasia with Rosemary. Cut a stem and 3 more grow in its place! You can be quite aggressive with your spring or summer prunings. And remember for fall pruning, don't do it. Ha ha. 8 weeks before your first frost date is the last time you can prune for the year.

Best and most helpful video on pruning rosemary that I've watched so far.I'm wondering exactly WHEN I should prune my young-ish plant here in South Louisiana (as we dont have a "true" winter, just occasional cold fronts).On to Part Two!Best of luck!

Thank you Dom. When rosemary is pushing growth, that's the time to prune to invigorate more bushiness. When it's not pushing and seams to just be sitting there (during hot weather here/summer) your pruning cuts will most likely just sit there and not invigorate the lateral stems below that cut. Here in Sonoma County rosemary seems to push the most growth in late fall through winter/early spring. Thank you for taking time to watch my videos and especially for posting! -mary

@@TheGardeningTutor Thanks so much for the reply!So NOT like many other plants that are cut back in the winter (Great to know) so I'll wait til I see new growth then, probably early this spring.I'm seeing (and reading) not to prune rosemary down the stem where it is bare and woody, but what if it is just woody, but not bare?Will new growth come from a pruned woody stem that has leaves down deep on the stem?Keep in mind this is a young (less than 3 years old) potted rosemary plant.Looking forward to future videos...Thanks again!

If the stem that is more woody has good, healthy dark green leaves than, yes, you can prune low down on that stem just above healthy leaves. If the leaves on the older stem are whispy and not healthy looking you usually will not get any good growth from that cut. -mary

THANK YOU! I have been searching for this answer and finally have a clear explanation. I read many herb books and they would just say prune back with no instruction on how or why prune a certain way. I have a small mason jar herb window and want to be able to grow and harvest throughout the year. Cut the leaders to create new growth!

I once killed my outside rosemary because I gave it too much water in summer. It started to turn yellow and BAM it was a gonner. -mary

@@TheGardeningTutor I have glass rocks in the bottom on my herb jars so I can better see the water levels and that helps a lot. But I will be sure to let the rosemary get dry before I water it and not overwater. A couple of weeks ago, not really sure how to prune my rosemary, I cut it and I noticed new growth on the sides and now I understand why. For supper tonight, knowing how to prune my rosemary, I snipped what I needed and I will be sure to look for new growth. I want to keep my herbs as long as I can, cut back when I need to, use in cooking, dry some, infuse some oil, and so on. Hoping that I am successful with my herbs.

Great! Remember that it's the active growing time when pruning cuts on rosemary can invigorate new growth best. Here, in zone 9, it's summer now and rosemarys are not pushing much growth so i don't prune as much (or at all) as I would during growth push. Thank you for watching! Let us know how it goes. -mary

This video is so informative. Thank you! I'm north of the US Michigan border in Canada. I plant small plants in late May and they grow all summer. I didn't know about pruning them and only harvest in mid October because winter is coming. When do I prune to get more growth? I normally plant in pots but is the ground better?

Never knew you could bend it to make it branch out more. Tell me, how do you get it to bloom? My rosemary is three years and never bloomed. I'm thinking more sun, perhaps?

Thank you so much! I have a young rosemary plant we bought last spring, and was wondering how to get it to fill out more. It has gotten about 3 times larger than it was when we got it, but I have a lot of leaders coming out of it. This video was very helpful. Do you have any tips for keeping it indoors over the winter? I transfered it into a larger pot, and brought it in before the heavy freeze. I do put it out on warmer days to get some extra sun. I plan to put it in the ground in the spring.

What a lucky rosemary to live with you! It will be a challenge to keep it happy indoors but here are some tips: avoid overwatering it; however, since they love rainy,cold weather so much where I live, i would make sure to spray it with water once a week or so to keep the leaves from drying out. Also, keep in the cold part of the house (also to keep from drying out too much). It sounds like it gets pretty cold where you live with the "freeze" and all so you're smart to bring it inside.Also, you're bringing it out to get sunlight which is really important too! Many frost tender plants here in zone 9 do well in winter when planted in spring instead of fall (just like you are talking about with planting your rosemary in spring). @@TheGardeningTutor, I'm considering putting my potted Rosemary plant into my unheated garage for the winter I purchased in the spring and transfer into a larger pot I live in an area that gets cold temps snow, and frost in the winter. I watched your video and my plant has mainly taller shoots but looks healthy. Would this be a good time to prune as temps are beginning to fall. Thank you great video.

Glen, I'm seeing your post now. Sorry for late reply. It's tricky to put a sun loving, evergreen plant like rosemary inside a low light situation like a garage for winter. I would love to hear back from you in spring to hear how it went. In your case I might hold off on pruning and prune once you can put it back outside and see that it is starting to push growth. Maybe you already pruned it since you didn't hear back from me right away. Either way you've made me very curious to know how it goes. Thank you for watching! -mary

@@TheGardeningTutor Hi I did put the plant in my garage close to a door window for some light. I did not prune it yet. It seems fine so far.The forecast shows snow in the next few days but temps have been above zero for the most part this fall.I plan to transplant in the spring from my bucket to the ground.Thankyou for your reply. I will let you know how it goes when the temps drop.Cross my fingers.

So happy you gave us an update. If your temps get 20 f or below your sweet rosemary may not survive in ground but the good news is that you can take cuttings from it (as a backup plan) before temps drop to make a whole new plant from the mother plant. What a lucky plant to get your care!

Hi Kelvin, I have this plant at home and it is easy to care of. It doesn't need to be watered everyday, it can support thirst for weeks, since it grows in quasi-dry mountains. You can water it once a week, but avoid making the soil moist the whole time, otherwise this will decrease its aroma. Salam

#TheGardeningTutor So if I were to root a cutting will it create off-shoot branches or do I have to bend that single starter stem down to get it to do that?

Hi IAMGiftbearer, yes rosemary can be started from cuttings. If i plan to put the cuttings in the ground, i use a pencil or bamboo stake to make a guide hole to put the cutting into so the stems don't bend or break. Plan ahead for not all of the cuttings to take, plant more than you'll need. Let us know how it goes! -mary

How do you decide how deep you want to go in for trimming? I'm afraid the wood towards the bottom is just too old and thick to branch out to younger branches.

You are right about that EOB6C. If you prune down to whimpy growth the plant will respond by doing nothing. Prune down to healthy, green part on the stem. The tips of these healthy small stems are where good, lush growth will push from. If you prune too high on the stem the growth will push from those stems and the plant will look like it has firework shapes on top of long stems (not what we are going for). -mary

Thank you for asking a question ning zhang. If you are cutting into older stems that have become all bare and woody, the cut will not invigorate new bushy growth but if you have a stem that is older and still has healthy green side shoots low on the stem you can cut just above a those. Ideally, grooming a rosemary this way from the time is is young will keep it beautiful (and not very woody) for many years. -mary

If you prune rosemary in the middle of summer not much will happen to your plant and it may suffer. Ideally, pruning just before new growth pushes is the way to go so that your pruning cuts can encourage new growth to push. Here in Zone 9, I prune rosemary throughout winter. If you're not sure, watch your plant to see when new growth is starting to grow rapidly (pushing) and get out there and prune it! Thanks for posting your question. Oh my! Sorry for the late reply, I have been swamped at work after stay at home for weeks. First evaluate the whole rosemary: is it mostly old and woody? Are there healthy, green leaves low down on the stems (at least some of the stems)? If your plant is super woody with no leaves pushing from low on the stems it may be time to replace it with a brand new plant. Otherwise if you do see healthy leaves low on the stems prune just above those to get your plant to bush out again. It will be important for success to focus on one branch at a time and not see the whole mess of stems. When you find crossing stems, choose which one to keep and which one to remove or shorten. Hmmm, maybe the plant gets pruned in a way before flowering that it doesn't flower. Usually the flowers are a light blue but once in awhile i see rosemary flowers that are a deeper blue. -mary

Thanks for posting kk P. If it is summer where you are growing your rosemary it is more than likely not pushing growth at this time. Pruning to encourage growth is done when the plant is just about to or is just beginning to push growth (this is in winter and early spring here in zone 9). That being said, thinning out of too dense foliage can be done in summer because we're trying to discourage new growth. Summer shaping is generally thinning cuts instead of the heading cuts. Your rosemary may sit there for now and then when pushing growth again it may bush out from your heading cuts. -mary
