Rosemary is a lovely plant to have in the garden. Occasionally, needs a little bit of looking after, including a bit of a cut back in order to promote new growth. Here's a video showing you how to do it.
Thank you for this video! I have been trying to find one that REALLY explains how to prune back an old wild rosemary. Your video did just that, very simply!
Michael: here is my rosemary bush Me: Wow that looks awesome and in so much better condition than mine Michael: And as you can see, I've been neglecting it Me: ... XD
Gorgeous ❤ Anyone that knows gardening knows how beneficial BOTH Sage and Rosemary are! To others they just see bushes 😅 Wow , one day i hope to have Rosemary and Sage THAT SIZE 😍 growing in my yard!
THANKS MICHAEL BOYTON!! i was about to go outside and unknowingly massacre my rosemary bush, but thought I had better double check my intended pruning technique first.
How wonderful is that bush!! There was a lovely mature rosemary bush in our garden and other members of the household hacked it back into the woody part for no reason at all, so now it's just bare sticks except for a few surviving shoots. And they threw all the fresh rosemary out as well, which I managed to salvage and dry for use. It was in a large bag in the garage, and I just returned from a holiday to discover it has been thrown away! I'm so annoyed and sad, so I guess now my only option is to try growing a few cuttings for an entirely new bush.
Don't worry - It's more robust that you can imagine. (It might appear 'ruined' but please have faith in the nature around you 🥰) I garden for a friend - her's is about 2 metres across 🌳with an open space in the middle, a metre wide of wooden 🍂'branches' 🍂appx 5cm thick. I can cut the other metre of branches outside of the centre (younger branches) and leave last years growth as the 'new' outer branches and then keep it trimmed with herb clipping every few weeks ! 🌿🌿🌿The renewed growth is much more robust and 'lively' - so I hope the family members gave you a 'blessing in disguise' 🥰🥰🥰
so informative thank you. I've just moved (WA in USA) and garden has out of control rosemary (upright and trailing) and sage plants- wasn't sure how to begin- this was so helpful. subscribed and looking forward to more tips - Cheers!!
Dehydrated Rosemary has many uses Infuse in cold avocado oil for 6 weeks in the sunshine (or 24hrs in extreme low heat, like inside a jar in a crockpot) Use the oil with beeswax to make salve 1 part wax pellet 3 parts oil Melt it together to make wound care salve, if desired , add 20 drops of tea tree oil The same rosemary infuse avocado oil can be used as a potent hair mask Boil the leaves for rosemary tea to spray on the washed hair to also promote growth Of course, cooking and add to soups or breads. The scent of rosemary helps the brain function and memory. So rubbing on the arm while studying it helps to recall the studying material Spiritually, some say that it repels bad energy, so it is recommended to have it in a vase inside a home or wear if behind the ear ;)
hi there Michael. I just found this older youtube of your rosemary. I have a large not well kept herb garden however the rosemary and lavender and sage are very large. My rosemary is in beautiful flowers. I am wondering if I can take cuttings now for my other gardens once they have sprouted roots. and also wondering if I can prune it now or wait til the flowers are gone?
Hi there Andie. The best time to prune your Rosemary is in early Spring. But you've missed that now. If you want to give it a prune, wait until after the flowers have gone (the plant needs to go through its natural reproductive cycle - and the flowers are important for the bees), and then cut it back by about a third. You can then give it another prune next Spring. If you are going to take cuttings, take them in Spring from the soft new growth (this also gives your new plants a whole growing season to take hold) as once it goes woody, it is more difficult for new roots to form. I hope this helps.
Im in Texas, and part of my rosemary is just sticks, and the other half has full new growth. Is it ok to trim off the sticks? I dont want to kill it. The stick part never came back after this past winter. Also, Ive had 2 rosemary bushes for about 5yrs now, and they have never had flowers.
My rosemary bush got frozen during this winter when we had freezing temperature in Texas this winter, only the middle part has leaves. What would you recommend?
That depends upon how well it is growing. It isn't like Sage. It grows more slowly, so give it a few years - unless you want to keep it to a certain (small) size.
