In this video I'll show you how to pull a transmission at the Pull-A-Part salvage yard. It can be pretty tricky since the use of jacks aren't allowed but in this video I'll show you how it's done!
Inverted Torx Set, you'll need the E-12: amzn.to/2fnOKyD

my little brother and I wrenched a 41te automatic tranny out of a chrysler town and country with no jacks or powertools. just hand tools and the wheel barrel. When we hit day 2, yeah it took us 2 days, it finally dropped into the barrel with the help of a little crowbar looking thing that I found. One of the part pullers guys just happened to be walking by when we dropped it out and he was like"Oh you got to love that sound," because it was loud It was like, BANG Bang! Yes, "for safety reasons you are not allowed to bring a jack to the yard". Makes sense. Some places will let you use rolling jacks though. Once place I used to frequent had floor jacks with rubber tires. They were always gone though and usually left out in the yard...

I had to smuggle my MAPP torch in once, I was grabbing the front factory recovery hooks off a ZJ. The loctite they use on those fasteners is so strong, that unless you warm up the weld nuts from inside the unibody, you will snap the bolts.

I work at a shop where we pull 5-10 transmissions and rebuild them per week. The transfer case on Chevys and smaller dodges that don't have the nut or bolt on the very bottom before I let the crossmember loose. Rest the front shaft end of the T-case on your knees and use that to direct it. Slide the T-case slowly back until the alignment dowel comes out and get a good grip on the main part and slowly lower it onto your legs and then turn it gently and roll it off of you....lot easier to do. I'm not a strong guy and I can take them down and put them back up without much issue...it's about technique. And remember before you ever let go of that transfer case when you are putting it in, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS have 1 bolt minimum holding it in place...

There's some serious irony going on in not allowing you to bring a transmission jack, but still allowing you to pull a transmission like that. That's VERY shady. The last time I went to one of those places I think they rented jacks for next to nothing. There's also a bit of a fail going on with forgetting to disconnect several bolts and the shifter linkage.

Make sure the transmission has fluid in it. Other than that if it isn't moving its time for a replacement or rebuild. Not cheap at all, which is why so many vehicles are scrapped either the engine fails or the transmission fails, and neither are cheap and usually cost more than the vehicle is worth to have replaced/repaired.

Almost every junk yard doesn't allow Jacks to be used because people don't know how to use them in the dirt or uneven ground. You wouldn't understand if you question why unless you lift a car off a dead man. Using old rims or any metal in that situation makes sense unless you never been there

What if motor is seized up how do you get it out then.
@user-zt4yk1sm8y
@user-zt4yk1sm8y 5 лет назад
Melvin Martin Couple of options. You can drop the oil pan and try to un seize the motor- figure out why it's seized a lot of times it's broken rod etc if you can drop the crankshaft etc or you can pull the engine and transmission and get the torque converter bolts from the side but you better have a good wrench that'll grip the fastener for you either way those rod cap bolts are torqued nice and tight too. You can pull the transmission without unbolting the torque converter bolts you just have to give it a real good couple of pulls straight back and then see if you can get to the torque converter bolts while the engine is still in the vehicle.

You could just unbolt the transmission crossmember and engine mounts (and disconnect all the lines and wires) and use an engine hoist if your yard allows for it, once off the car, then you can remove the transmission from the engine if you dont want it. Those bolts require the proper socket to remove without damage, but you could always drill them out, grind them off, etc.

They won’t let you use a floor jack for safety reasons but they’ll let you pull a transmission with a vehicle resting on rims, pulling bolts from crossmembers that can crush you when they let go .....all in the name of safety. The junk yard must be owned by Californian politicians. Love the vids🎄

I've got to replace the flex plate on my 83 bronco. How un-fun of a job is this going to be? :(
