@@lukesgoldies Hi in one of your shorts you asked why your fish all jump up towards the top when you TURN OUT the overhead light . My theory is because they're SO HAPPY and RELIEVED the light is OFF . It's actually cruel to have an overhead light on most of the time over fish because , picture what it would be like if there was a bright light so close to you , on most of the time . And LEDs are supposed to be really bad for animals and humans but most people don't want to know this ... for a while their people were trying to get them banned in Europe . If it is LED this is particularly harsh on them . Please leave the overhead lights OFF most of the time ... I know a lot of people won't do this ... but if they really love their fish , then they will .

@@gardensofthegods that’s a nice theory, but goldfish don’t get “relieved” or “so happy” and that would not cause them to swim up. The overhead light is not harmful 👍

Perfect explanation of a process that was a steep learning curve! Great job! But note for viewers is that if you uses this process it won’t take months. Smart to do all the filters at once. Also newbies should know it is not about the water, it’s about getting the bacteria to grow in the nooks and crannies of your filter and surfaces that touch the water.

I have always cycled in a very similar way using non surfactant ammonia. Although, I let the ammonia completely convert to nitrite before re-dosing. A bullet proof cycle is a great foundation. Dosing to 4ppm means you can, pretty much, chuck in your complete stock choice upon cycle completion.

@@someguy-uq3vm you don’t have to keep the ammonia level at 4ppm. and the conversion rate between ammonia nitrite and nitrate isn’t exactly 1:1. the average hobbyist can sufficiently cycle their tanks with 1ppm of ammonia. however this is great cycling for the stocking of his tanks.

Luckily I took care of it well so the fish are still alive, but I am doing a lot of research for my second tank as I'm keeping fancy goldfish and I don't wanna fuck it up. Plus the tank is bigger and it'll take a while more for it to be totally cycled

Also am i looking for a fast conversation to nitrite to nitrate as well?

Cycled a 10 gallon tank with fish in it (3x bettas, and about 12 tetras) in 17 days. Had to keep a constant eye on things, made use of the bottled bacteria, and did water changes to manage the ammonia/nitrite. Have zero across the board now (the plants mop up the nitrate). You can limit the effect of nitrites with a _small_ amount of (pure) salt: 50x the amount of nitrite, which will work out to less than a gram in a tank that size.

@obamama4632
@obamama4632 2 года назад
Its crucial to cycle a fish tank. This is because your fish produces ammonia when it poops and ammonia is toxic to fish. Cycling your tank allows beneficial bacteria to grow in the tank and that beneficial bacteria is able to break down the ammonia into a less toxic form. This may take up to a few months but i recommend going to your local fish store and buying refrigerated bacteria (keep it refrigerated at home) and that will cycle your tank in 2 weeks or less. I hope this helps.
