How to (quickly) disassemble and maintain a Benchmade Axis-lock knife like the 940-2

Today, I'll share a much faster approach to maintaining an Axis lock than you've seen in my Benchmade Valet, Rift, or Contego videos. You're not able to service every nook and cranny (hah), but you get the important stuff, quickly.

You have hinted at this video more times than my strange uncle has mentioned the size of the giant albino goldfish he totally caught while fishing alone

I usually loosen one side of the scale screws just a little bit so the is a little more wiggle room to get the blade back in

Nick, you didn't show us the centering. I have a classic 940 (green/purple), and it's a fine balancing act indeed between minimal blade play and 'acceptable' centering.

I just used this method to clean and lube a used 940 I had picked up. It worked great with no hiccups, and the action is much smoother now. Thanks for the tips and demonstration!

The cool thing about Benchmade is free sharpening and repair for life. Just send it to the Oregon City factory. I live fairly nearby and they have an awesome Factory outlet store to visit and drop off repairs and sharpening.

That's cool and all, but having your warranty voided if you take your own knife apart is not a beautiful thing.

@Jeremy I know for sure it's benchmade, I'm unaware if Spyderco has the same outlook.

Thanks for this. I've had my 940 for about a year and have been a bit hesitant to take it all the way apart to clean it. This was very easy. Took maybe 10 minutes including time to get tools and supplies. 👍

Wow! Thanks, Nick. My 940 was getting a bit "sticking" (action) but this worked great!!! Back to expected drop shut with very little effort! I'm guessing from your title and logic that this would work as well for say, the mini-Osborne, the Valet -- ANY Axis lock, yes?

Question: Does it matter which side of the knife you push the pivot through? Also, how do I fix the pivot to where it doesn’t move back and forth if I’m pushing from both sides? I tighten it to try fixing it, but then I lose action. Thanks.

You are a fair unbiased reviewer as far as I can tell. So far there has been little said that would entice me to buy any of the Benchmade 940's. Nice design. Very poor quality control. Not worth the risk as far as I am concerned. Thanks for being honest.

Good video. I buy a lot of used knives off eBay. Uniformly, they are dirty. Step 1. Soak in vinegar. It can reduce rust. Step 2. Use a series of q - tips with the vinegar. I squeeze the q-tip with a pair of pliers to flatten the same and get into small areas. If a q-tip comes out dirty, don't use that end a second time. Step 3. When the knife is dry, try to operate. Operating dry will allow you to understand where parts are rubbing and whether you have to loosen or tighten screws, eventually. Step 4. Lubricate. Step 5. Check the lubricate areas with a flattened q-tip. You may find additional junk has been loosened up. Step 6. Test for full function and adjust screws if necessary. Rarely has it been necessary to take the knife apart, partially or fully, to get it to work. The last time was a broken part in a Spyderco Endura and the part was not available outside the factory, so it went back to the factory and without asking, the factory reconditioned the used blade as well.

Is it a torx bit? if so what size(s) do I need? the opening mechanism on my 4300 is gummed up with something and will only open to about 90 degrees when I hit the button so I want to try to take it apart and clean whatever gunk is in the mechanism out so it will open all the way on its own like it's supposed to.
