In the following video, I demonstrate a very simple and effective method to self-treat that painful stiff neck feeling that we all get from time to time.
*************************************************
Have you ever woke up from a good night of sleep with a kink in your neck? How about not being able to move your head without pain? Yeah, me, too. How about a sore neck or a stiff neck after exercising or doing an activity like painting? Yep, I have had that, too.
So often this “kinked neck” or “stiff neck” feeling is easily self-treatable. In this video, I demonstrate a very simple and effective method to self-treat that painful stiff neck feeling that we all get from time to time.
If you want a more detailed explanation of neck pain and ways to prevent it from occurring, be sure to read my post on Neck Pain and Headaches? Work Your Core?! (www.thephysica...) You will discover why it’s important to insure proper cervical core strength in order to not only alleviate neck pain and headaches, but also to prevent them from reoccurring.
For additional ways to easily improve your posture and reduce pain in the neck and shoulder, be sure to subscribe to my e-mail list to gain immediate access to My Top 8 Stretches to Eliminate Neck, Upper Back, and Shoulder Pain (www.thephysica...) for step-by-step exercise instructions and photos.
Also, please refer to my video, What to Do When You Can’t Look Up ( • What to Do When You Ca... ).
I highly recommend the following book, Treat Your Own Neck, by Robin A. McKenzie (www.amazon.com....
Have you ever suffered from a stiff or painful neck? Which treatments have worked the best for you? Please share below.
If you’re not experiencing relief after trying these self-treatment techniques, contact your local physical therapist for an assessment and help in managing the condition. The American Physical Therapy Association (aptaapps.apta....) offers a wonderful resource to help find a physical therapist in your area.
If you have a question that you would like featured in an upcoming blog post, please comment below or submit your question to contact@thePhysicalTherapyAdvisor.com. In case you haven’t already, be sure to subscribe to my e-mail list and RU-vid channel as well as join our community on Facebook by liking @ThePhysicalTherapyAdvisor!

If the pain is too severe you may need to take some pain relievers and use ice or heat to calm it down prior to attempting the technique. Go slow and easy. You may start with just chin retractions first. You can find a picture of them in this article. www.thephysicaltherapyadvisor.com/2018/12/12/neck-pain-and-headaches-work-your-core/

Wow.......I have 4 cages in my neck for spondylosis, I'm doing all the remodel/renovation on my house basically alone. And this pain has been here since I installed a new front door about 6 days ago now. I absolutely felt relief. I dont stop everything, I believe you'll seize up if you do, but I do lessen what I do when something gets sore. So now instead of (not wanting to) taking my muscle relaxers for a couple of days, I'll be doing this for the couple of days instead. Relaxers can make your ache feel too good and I dont wanna strain it anymore. Thank you, I woke up to do this search.

Often one time can be enough to really help with the pain and loss of mobility. But IF the vertebral segment involved is particularly stiff or inflamed you may need to do this technique multiple times a day for a few days for complete recovery. There is no risk to repeatedly doing the technique as long as you are not being too aggressive. Really appreciate the feedback! Thank you!!!

Glad it helped! I typically advise continuing to do the technique until you are pain free and/or have full neck range of motion. Take care!

Oh wow, my neck has been hurting for 3 days straight. I couldn’t even sit up without so much pain. This definitely helped alleviate some pain. Wow. I’m gonna do more in the morning

OOOOOOH MMMYYYYY GOD. I haven't been able to turn my neck without pain for the last 5 days. Did something in my sleep after a day of moving heavy furniture into our new home. It's been horrible. I've tried to get my SO to rub my neck, my back, my shoulders etc and nothing has helped. I did this THREE TIMES... and it felt almost 100% better. It tightened back up after about 5 minutes but it's SOMETHING!! Thank you!!! Thank you from someone who suffers from such horrible neck pain/migraines, back issues etc. THANK YOU!!!

Good! Keep working at it. (It can take a few times over a day or two for full resolution.) Be sure to check out my other video on neck pain that demonstrates different techniques: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OD2fOaN2YDo.html. Also, I have a more in-depth post on my website about it: www.thephysicaltherapyadvisor.com/2020/10/14/what-to-do-when-you-cant-look-up/.

@ThePhysicalTherapyAdvisor 3 года назад
Good feedback! In the meantime, the spinous process is a bony projection off the posterior (back) of each vertebra. See this link for more info: www.spine-health.com/glossary/spinous-process#:~:text=Spinous%20process%20is%20a%20bony,and%20ligaments%20of%20the%20spine.
