This is really helpful. I was getting trimmed every 4 - 5 months when I grew out from a pixie. Every cut set me back so far, but I convinced myself it was necessary and my hair just didn't grow fast. Then I moved towns and got a new stylist, and I made so much progress really quickly. She was also good at creating a liveable style for the inbetween stages, as mentioned in the video. So it's worth changing stylists if you're finding progress too hard. Not all are equally skilled in this area (just like with curly hair in general).

When growing out my hair, I always just... don't cut it, for years even, until it's long. Now, I am not a "frequenter" of hair salons at all anymore either. I cut my own hair. It is so very easy these days to follow a course, or get info online. We now cut my dad's hair as well (since March 2020) because you know: world problems. We got so lucky being able to do our own hair, me mom, dad, now with this "situation". But you are right: just don't cut it. You can always cut individual splits out (there usually aren't that many). Nice to see you back, Susie. And before you disappear again... Happy Holidays to you and your family!

Interestingly, my hair is now down to my mid back because I have not been to a salon in over 3 years. I had a horrible cut that was so short and awful and I vowed not to go back. It worked out, because I have always wanted long hair but never had the patience to let it grow. Usually I would get to an awkward stage and just get it cut thinking that would solve my problem. I was also always under the impression that my hair couldn’t be long because the curls do not last and get weighed down in length. Which is true, but I’m okay with it at this stage of my life. I also have never brushed, used heat or colored my hair, so I guess it all paid off in the end 😊

I have come to realize, yes, don't cut or trim your hair if you want it to grow long. When you cut your hair, it shocks the hair, and it won't grow fast. But when your hair is left alone to grow naturally, your hair realizes it can grow, and it then grows fast. And don't bleach or dye your hair. Let it stay in its natural color. And don't get layers, it thins the hair. Have it all the same length for thickness. And your advice is correct.

The most honest and down to earth video I’ve seen. I enjoyed this video for the content and super enjoyed your accent. I’ll be letting my hair gets lil bit wild! Not loving it is so important to address! I have wavy THICK hair… so it’s very embarrassing. I’m just goin to let this pixie grow grow grow… when a serious obvious issue arises, I will have the bottom of the back trimmed. along the way I will do my best to style and make hopefully hilarious jokes about my silly hair. I have a wicked sense of humor so I’m kind of looking forward to the comedic value of my hair journey! I loved your video!

My hair never seemed like it would grow until I realized I was always getting it trimmed and my trims were always more hair being lost than I wanted. I got a haircut in June/July and it was A LOT shorter than I wanted because I lost about 4 inches!!! I haven’t been anywhere to get it cut since because I’m honestly a little scared to trim it or anything. It’s been growing like crazy and I’m finally getting the length to my hair again, I plan on letting it grow as long as I can and going in only for a trim when it really needs it. So if I need a trim in a few months okay or if I need a trim in a year that’s what I’ll do!! The no cutting/trimming tip definitely works!!

Glad to see you back, Susie! Thank you for the tips. I always thought the same regarding people with really long hair. Your always being told to get your hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks, but honestly anyone I know with really really long hair simply doesn’t cut it. Period. Of course there are always exceptions. For me the worse part are those awkward stages where you are tempted to just cut it all off again. I am struggling with terrible layering in my hair that has made my already fine hair appear finer. I have always wanted long hair but with age too, I’m not sure it will be possible. Your tips however are very much appreciated. I’m so like you too…I get easily bored with my hair.

Such helpful tips! So nice to see you again. I'm in the process of embracing my grays and not wanting to keep going to the salon all the time to get a root touchups only to have the roots visible after only 5-6 weeks. I got partial highlights last month and I'm really liking how natural they are as they grow out. The nice thing about having curly hair is no obvious regrowth line so I feel like I can get away with not touching up my highlights for awhile. Hope you are well. Greetings from Ontario

This was helpful for me. My stylist has given me a haircut with short layers the last 2 times when I had told him that I don't want layers anymore. I've been going to him for years, but now I haven't seen him in close to 9 months because I don't want him to give me the same haircut. He's been good for me for 12 years, so now it's hard to find someone else. I've been cutting the bottom of my hair and now, I've gotten it to almost all one length. It may take 2-3 months to really get it to the length and style that I want. I will probably go to someone else for my next haircut because this has been an ordeal. Thank you for confirming my ideas of grow-outs!

So helpful! Corona made me grow my hair, cut it myself and stopped to dye! At the moment i have too much layers and bangs, that is frustrating because you can't see a cut, and the sides are too broad. I don't know, if pins will help. Please show your styles with pins and bands for transition🙏

I recently had 52cm taken off. I asked for only 35cm off! It went to my bottom and is just past bottom of my neck. I gave it to charity and that is the only thing that is making me not cry daily. I am trying to embrace the shorter hair- so easy to detangle and to dry (still 2 hours though at least). But hard to know how to style, how to sleep in it and feels a bit bushy at the bottom.

My challenge with not getting trims is that I'm transitioning from coloring to salt & pepper. I cut my hair in a very short bob to get rid of a ton of old color, but I really regret cutting it this short. I'm now trying to grow it out to just above shoulder length. I'd like to just not get it trimmed, but I still have quite a bit of old color and I think my hair will begin to look and feel damaged if I don't trim it. I can't wait until all the color is gone and I can just grow it!

I get bored with my hair as well. So much so that when my brother showed his girlfriend our family photos, she kept asking who I was. Lol. Hair color change, length change, style change, just gotta do something different. Currently I’m growing my hair out as well from chopping off my highlights into a long pixie and going natural hair color with silver sprinkles. It’s almost as long as yours now but I keep trimming it when it gets awkward. I’ll stop that now 🙄

I like to just olaplex my ends every few weeks for 20 mins before my weekly shower, especially in winter, and that prevents split ends for me. Saves a lot of time and energy too over olaplexing the whole thing.

Thank you for this great video! Much regret here recently. Fortunately, I'm careful with my hair in all the ways you've mentioned, so I never get split ends. Plus I take hair vitamins so my hair does grow out extra quickly. One thing I will say is that every 8 to 10 weeks, I do need to take shears to my ends and snip about 1/4 inch off because my hair is definitely under some kind of stress that no amount of protein treatments , moisture treatments, or gel casts will help. Just 1/4 inch eliminates the the unforgiving frizz and drabness I tend to experience, then my hair bounces right back to life again and continues to gain in length. ☺️ I see my stylist every 6 to 8 months to reshape. Thanks again for your helpful videos!

Just found your channel today! Went to look at other videos and saw your leaving RU-vid video HAHA but I am so glad you made this video! Great advice and I was just like you where every 3 years I would donate 14-16" of my hair to shoulder length then grow it back out. My most recent donation in 2018 I decided to get a blonde balayage (naturally light brown hair) which has been helpful without a sharp line in regrowth so I haven't had to bleach it too many times but it still took a while to grow this time b/c I keep cutting it to a short style until about 2 years ago when I finally let it grow back out. It is currently back to the middle of my back and feeling long again. That said I do think my hair is pretty dry on the ends so I am looking into treatments I can do more regularly so I can still keep blonde hair while it is long.

Spliss is such an odd phenomenon. I have other hair issues (like my lengths were always super dry and bushy, even with untreated, never heat styled hair), but I haven't had spliss ever in my life. My hair just doesn't do that, no matter how long I go without a trim. Currently growing it out again from an ill-advised pixie cut 2 years ago. Only at chin length, due to regular reshaping in between....but personally, I was happier doing it like that. I would rather the process is slow, but I always look presentable.

Hi Susie, thank you for this helpful video. Over the last two years I’ve had two pretty bad haircuts and bleaching jobs. I’m a natural brunette (level 6) and have had a hard time growing my hair long particularly the undergrowth. Since my hair bleaching debocle (my neck being burned during the process) my undergrowth has turned curly with some days it’s kinky straight. I’m 50 years old and always have had healthy hair. I’m using a leave in conditioner now in the shower but still while growing out all my layers pull it up in a pony tail or bun. I’d love to get your feedback with photos of my hair to get your thoughts.

Me too! I don't know how people tolerate having really long hair, I get so frustrated with it. I think it's because I never really had loooong hair as a kid, so I'm not used to dealing with it. Also, some people's hair just grows slower than others'. My parents always took my sister and me to get haircuts at the same time when we were little, and my sister's hair always grew longer than mine. It's not like she was using different products than me or getting different nutrition - we simply had different hair growth. So, while some people might be able to grow their hair down to their waist in a year, that's definitely NOT the case for everyone, whether you trim or not. Aaanyway, guess I just needed to rant a bit.

I haven't been to a salon in 10 years or more. Last time was in a beauty school and I hated the cut. My biggest problem is super dry scalp. Brushing my hair to stimulate hair oils destroys the really tight curls. If I could find good scalp products that didn't aggravate my scalp, I'd go to the casino knowing I was super lucky.
@tessltaekook8501
@tessltaekook8501 2 года назад
Try using shampoos without sulfates. They don't ladder much but won't strip your hair and scalp of oils, and they get your hair clean just like regular shampoo. Yves Rocher has the best ones. All of their products (for hair, face, body etc) are wonderful. Try also to massage your conditioner (no silicons ofc) into your scalp to get back the oils it needs. Don't listen to those who say that conditioner only goes on the ends, they are wrong. Your scalp is skin too, and just like your face it needs a moisteriser after cleansing otherwise it gets very dry and irritated. Your hair and scalp will thank you if you try this :)

I can't tell you how much money I've spent, (and how many times I've returned products to Ulta!) in the last 8 months! I purchased the biotera gel and the cantu curl yesterday and plan on trying them today. I wanted to ask you if you use a heat protectant in your hair if you plan on diffusing your hair. If so, what kind do you prefer?

The best most natural hair color I have used is a dark brown henna. It makes my hair strong and healthy. I think I am going to start getting trims every 4 months instead of every 2 months from now on :).

It's funny I haven't dyed my hair in yrs. I started having it cut underneath cause it's so darn thick but I wanted to start growing long for a certain look, but after a recent surgery I was thrown into early menopause and I stay hot pretty much and now I'm always white still trying to grow it trying different things to put it up for work. Most recently started wearing bun makers and even using hair sticks. But I think most important is I discovered using sesame seed oil as a diy hot oil hair treatment. Haven't had a trim since July and I swear it's been growing faster.

I've missed you, glad your back. My hsir has thinned out quote a bit. Am using rosemary essential oil and massage my scalp in evening, hoping to stimulate new growth. Any info about growing thicker?

I didn't get my hair cut all through highschool and it was down to my hips senior year. I donated it and then didn't get a haircut again for a good four years. I went with hip length hair back to a beauty school to get it cut. The hairdresser asked me if I was sure I wanted to cut it and then went to ask their professor because they were scared to chop all that length off😂 I am currently growing my hair out again. I have never bleached it but i would love to colour it but haven't done that because with my dark hair I cannot do that without bleach. :/ I second the faked updo and Bobby pins!!! I'm currently throwing it up with mini crocodile clips.

Glad to see a new vid upload from you! Do you have any tips for single strand knots or fairytale knots? Idk what they’re called but they’re fairly new to me as I style my hair wavy.

What do you think about wearing clip in extensions while you're growing through the awkward shoulder lenght stage or would that cause damage? Thanks for the tips Suzie 💖

Hey Dark Star!! I actually did that a few years ago as well. I think as long as you remove them carefully & don’t sleep on them you’ll be ok. They definitely have potential to cause breakage but if your hair is healthy I’d try it. The only reason I didn’t mention that in the video is because real extensions are so expensive & just not practical for a lot of the viewers. Great comment

I have a little longer than shoulder length hair and would like to grow it out again. I live in MN so I have been blow drying my hair straight once a week and then scrunching/curly girl routine the rest of the days. It too cold for me to do it daily bc my hair will freeze outside. I'm nervous that I need to get trims since I am damaging my hair. I also get blond highlights every 4-6 months.

Hi Susie and happy holidays. I have been a subscriber of yours for a long time now. I have viewed a lot of videos about curly hair routines, and I am just wondering, do we really have to use more than 1 product or 'layer products' in order to achieve nice looking curly hair? I used to have shoulder length hair, until I decided to have a pixie cut, so now my hair looks straight.. when I had longer hair, I didn't know what product to use, I have 2C thin strands, low porosity and not a lot of hair. I tried using gel or mousse and my hair looked and felt ramen like after it dries. I air-dry it, I don't really have much time to diffuse my hair in the a.m. so that leaves me air drying. I then tried cream, but it got my hair weighed so I decided to just cut it pre pandemic. Now, I want to grow it out again, so, back to my question, do I have to layer products? I respect your suggestion. Thank you in advance, more power to you and stay safe.

Try using a cream or jelly that has some hold in it. Might take some trial and error but if you find the right one it could make your life a lot easier.
