In this video I give some very detailed information on replacing the spindle bearings or the whole spindle on your riding lawn mower deck. This is also a good time to check the other idlers and the belt itself to see if it needs replacing. This can also be a good time to install grease fittings in your mower if you don't have existing ones already. Here's a video I did about greasing spindle bearings:

DIAGNOSING ALERT. My deck was making a god-awful screeching and clicking noise when the blades were engaged (more on the right side). Everything… spindle, idlers, etc seemed tight. Took off clutch and it appeared fine. Installed new spindle. Still making noise. Replaced new idler. Still making noise. Finally took off clutch again and disassembled. Plates appeared scored. MUST be the clutch. After replacing with new clutch…STILL making noise. $hit…. Turns out it was the metal cup just above the blade that keeps debris out of the bearing that wore loose and spinning. Probably due to mixing and matching different parts from different spare spindles there was a bit of play. Wedged a bit of twine around it (yeah, its Macgyvered) to snug it up and back to normal. Just something to keep in mind.

I have a grinding noise after a new deck belt but not the blade pulleys. When the troy bilt pony is sitting idle the noise sounds terrible. I've greased and lubed everything and the noise is still there. If engage the blades there is no noise. Release the blade lever ,and as it sits idle it has that terrible grinding noise
@JLPicard440
@JLPicard440 2 месяца назад
Oh wow! That's not something to be desired is it... 😂. In a case like that I will usually have someone sit on the seat so that I can do a visual inspection / walk around to try and pinpoint where that noise is coming from. Obviously keeping anything that can get hurt like hands and fingers away from moving parts! One thing I just thought of, is it a squealing noise? If the belt is slightly to short it might do that...

I have a John deer zero turn I think it’s a z34 or something like that. Anyway the spring that makes the blades engage well anyway the spring breaks because of the vibration that it makes only when the blades are engaged I only have like 30.6 hours on the thing. We tightened the bar that runs under the flap but like I said from the vibration now that is loose again. The spring cost like $18 so I’d like to kinda know what is going on before I mow again. I live in picayune Ms so I’m not sure where u are but I would like to get an idea before having someone come out and since I’m a woman, possibly getting ripped off. Thank you and GOD BLESS U

HI! I am in Fl.. It might be a bit far to MS! I have heard of that town for sure. I have heard that before about the John Deere deck and I've experienced heavy vibration from other machines as well with nothing apparently wrong. I understand about getting ripped off. The shops like to charge a lot even for just a diagnosis. With only 30 hours is it still under warranty? I think JD might be 2 years.

Has anyone experienced the idlor pulley digging into the mount? I went and got the mount on the deck welded back and pulley fell off again and is eating back through the mount on the deck again?
@JLPicard440
@JLPicard440 2 месяца назад
If the bearings are wore out then the idler pulley can do that. There's not much clearance under it...

At the end of the video when you say “replace the bearing on the other side”, is this just something you needed to do yourself or is this something we would need to do to complete this repair?
@JLPicard440
@JLPicard440 2 месяца назад
HI, I think the reason I said that was because the bearings in the other spindle on the other side were bad too. If yours are still good then no, there's no reason to replace them... Thanks.. 😊

Excellent video, Rudy! It would have been nice if you had listed the Race/Bearing Tool you used to seat the new bearings in the description. Do you have a link or at least a make and model/part number, please? I have two 46" deck tractor mowers; a Troy-Bilt and a Craftsman, both made by MTD, so my Spindles are likely the same as these. Thanks

HI, I'd have to go back and see the video to see what I used. But it sounds like it's the regular race tool I use for everything which I just got from Harbor Freight... I'm sure Amazon sells a similar tool, but the one I have came from HF... Thanks!..

@@JLPicard440 Thanks for fast the reply! This tells me you really care about your subscribers and even viewers. I'll go to my Harbor Freight and check out their Race/Bearing Tool Kit(s). I tried to remove the bearings in a spindle set to install Zerk fittings for greasing and spindle longevity. I was able to get them out of one and install the Zerk fitting, but not the other. Best wishes for you growing your channel! 👍👍 That blade lock tool looks pretty handy, too. Is there an Amazon link or is that another Harbor Freight item? I like using Amazon links when available to support those who help me. Too bad Harbor Freight doesn't have affiliate links. ☹ I usually use an Impact Driver to take the blades off, but you mentioned not over-torqueing when reinstalling.

My brand new craftsman t110 makes a metallic rattling noise when the deck is engaged, but it happens on and off consistently and rhythmically. Do you know what could be causing that?
@JLPicard440
@JLPicard440 2 месяца назад
HI, not without seeing it. For something like that I will usually have someone sit on the mower while it's running so I can look around and do a visual inspection to try and see where the noise is coming from. Obviously keeping hands and anything else that can get hurt well away from any moving parts! I've definitely found rattles that drive me crazy that way... 😊

@@JLPicard440 I understand. It was odd to me because it’s brand new so shouldn’t be making sounds like that. Have you ever heard of brand new with bad bearings?

Anything is possible! If it's brand new is it returnable? Sometimes Lowes or places like that will allow returns for a time period...

@JLPicard440
@JLPicard440 Год назад
HI, yes if you look under the deck with the engine off of course... try grabbing the blades one at a time and turn them to see if one of them is hitting the side of the deck. One of the blades could be bent maybe?

Hello... I don't remember at this point... If you get the model number usually from under the seat, you can go to a website like www.partstree.com and there you will find a parts breakdown. This will show the part number of the bearings or any other part... 😀
