Hey gang,
I thought I'd try something a bit different today and create a new ramble series on the channel, somewhere we can just sit and talk candidly about something we're doing, feeling or thinking about.
The first one is all about how and why and how Hannah and I quit drinking.
I've found there are tons of benefits of going sober but getting here has not been easy. Let's talk about it.

Alcohol and cigarettes addiction actually destroyed my life. I could remember several years ago after divorce with my wife which brought me into my disastrous journey on Alcohol and cigarettes. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Got diagnosed with cptsd. Not until a friend recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. I'm 28 and I've never drank in my life. I never wanted to when I was younger and then once I started to consider it, my therapist told me it was good I didn't drink because it would make my anxiety worse. Eventhough my anxiety and depression has gotten worse, I'm glad I didn't go down that route because I would probably be in an even worse place. It definitely makes social gatherings harder for me, but I think learning how to handle a social gathering without a substance is something that I hope is a good thing. I will probably never touch it because I can't risk my mental health. Congratulations on your choice, I wish you the best of luck. I will say remember that no path is a straight line and that is totally okay.

Wow did this video come at the right time! Woke yesterday feeling absolutely vile, following heavy nights drinking both Friday and Saturday night. I still feel out if sorts, which yes, proves that alcohol as you age (I'm 38) does not mix well! 😂 I actually gave up alcohol for 6 x months before. Felt amazing and thought it would reduce my tolerance, i.e. stop me being able to drink like a sailor. But it did not. I would say I'm a binge drinker at weekends. Can take it or leave it other times and never drink on my own. But as someone who enjoys fitness and living a relatively healthy lifestyle, the drinking on top os just killing that. I too suffer with anxiety and depression and my mood was at an all time low yesterday because of the booze. So thank you for sharing your journey thus far. Its kicked me up the bum to do the break from alcohol again, and maybe do so for good this time. 🙂

I’ve been struggling with the urge to have “just one drink” later and I know it always turns into more than that. Well I have needed some motivation to feel like I can do this and I thank you for making this video. You’re helping lots of people. To whoever is reading this, you’re not alone and we CAN do this💯

Started drinking at age 55. While working a new job at the Post Office. Every time I got off work a large silver bullet was chugged. Then after 6 months a half pint of Bacardi. After drinking every day at least 4 mixed drinks of absolute my doc says it’s time to stop, due to fatty liver and just general unbalanced wellness, and always feeling off and loopy.

Good luck mate, been almost two years for me and it's awesome. One thing I would say is that the alcahol free beers just remind you of drinking and be weary of them. Hands down the best thing I ever did though, mental clarity and feeling more yourself is better than anything booze does for you.

I've been surrounded by alcohol for two years at university, I know that's nothing for a lot of people, but I've come to the realisation that the obsession with it, does border on an addiction - it's so normalised. I've done some terrible things under the influence of alcohol, especially when I use it as a coping mechanism and it's just not worth it. Since this realisation I've tried sober nights out, even going to the club, (although it's a little bit disturbing sometimes haha) if you're with your friends and there's good energy, you can bounce off of other people and it can be even more of a fun time. I know you've got this Steph, I think living life as it is, unfiltered, completely sober, and just enjoying it, is a truly wonderful thing. Best of luck!

He's absolutely right, as you get older the hangovers are brutal. For me whisky was the worst. The last time I drank I poisoned myself with whisky, the following day i literally thought I was going to die. I laid on the couch and couldn't move. It felt like I had a hole in gut. I knew I never wanted to feel like that again. For me the decision was easy. Yes, it takes work, but I love getting up everyday feeling good. I never want to feel that sick pain again.

Ok so..I am from Greece and live in Uk for the past 8 years! In Greece when in family gatherings etc people tend to give the little ones a sip of beer or light alcoholic drink if they ask to try..what I want to say is that the bigger the deal society makes about it the more ‘curious’ and impatient to try this “miracle” people get! In Uk for some reason alcohol is a big deal starting from supermarkets and restrictions etc to families drinking without kids watching ..I think its just part of our life and not big deal really! I am not an alcohol drinker at all but always fascinates me how obsessed people get with alcohol here..btw I love Uk and do not want to seem arrogant towards the matter but I think we should not make a big fuss about it either! Great job for quitting..life is beautiful when you can actually live it and feel it..we do not have to dull our feelings bad or good..they are all good..well done again and enjoy life and your beautiful family ❤️

Thank you for sharing this. I think many people have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol and without it I definitely feel better. I started to drink less often and limit it to a maximum of two glasses for a year now. Most of the time it is easy, when meeting with friends it can be harder. I think in general I dont like the feeling of being dependent on something, even if it is just Coffee, as soon as it gets a ritual that I really can not skip I find it strange.

I started drinking when I was 17 & the first thing I noticed was how my social anxiety practically vanished into thin air. Fast forward a couple of years to my "best friend" repeatedly telling me how much more of a fun person I am when I'm drunk. Fast forward to realizing alcohol "helps" me release pent up emotions. Fast forward almost 15 years later & I'm pretty sure my organs are feeling the impact of my binge drinking. I can barely drive without having a panic attack & the first thing I think of after a stressful day is going to the liquor store, so I can go home & drink. I can barely deal with any stress without getting intoxicated on some level & as I'm lying here severely hungover, trying not to vomit between shitting my brains out, I'm realizing I can't keep doing this to myself.

In my early twenties I partied more often than I probably should have but somewhere in my mid to late twenties I discovered I REALLY don’t like vomiting or feeling like crap the next day, wasting so much money on alcohol or the ramifications of poor decision making. These days I’ll have a drink whenever the mood strikes, but it only seems to strike 5 or 6 times a year, if that. Alcohol is a depressant so probably not the best choice if you already have depression or anxiety. Also alcohol is not the healthiest thing we can put in our bodies, regardless of any emotional issues. If drinking is problematic or is potentially becoming problematic, then appropriate steps can always be taken. I think it’s wonderful you recognize a potential problem and are choosing what is best for you and your family! 🥂 Cheers (with sparkling apple juice or non-alcoholic beer or my personal favorite - water on the rocks with a wedge of lemon) to feeling better and to your 1000 days of sobriety to come! 👏🏻 🎉👏🏻 I support your decision to stop drinking 100%! Well done!

Good luck with it all. You sound like you’re all in now, one day at a time and no pressure worked for me. I’m 43 and I quit for dry Jan 2020, kept going, then the pandemic hit and it was seriously the best thing for me. My drinking was definitely to cope with social anxiety, but then fed into a persona I thought was part of who I was. I tried to give up before but then caved in social situations. Having no social situations to go to was brilliant! After six months or so I was just in the swing of it and started giving less fucks about being boring and having no banter😀. I soon realised after my mates had had a few drinks no one notices whether you’re drinking or not. I can’t stay out late anymore, alcohol fuels you through, whereas by 9pm I’m exhausted from being social and good to go. But I’m ok with that now. And Ive also got to know myself better. I used to think I had a party image to live up to. That was all bullshit. And nothing beats not feeling that post booze shame and anxiety. I’m 43 now, my kids have a mum with more energy and self worth and my husband doesn’t have to worry about my professing my undying love for him to a group of strangers.(why did I do that?!!) Win:win. Both of my parents suffer from addictive personalities, the main “drug” being alcohol. From my experiences seeing them at their worst when i was a youngling, i swore off booze. Obviously when i reached the appropriate age, it was then introduced to me as a natural stimulant that can help provide a more exciting experience of life, when used at the right times. Being almost 27 now, I’d love to say that i don’t have an obsession with it, but i definitely use it as a confidence/personality booster most times. But overtime the alcohol ended up creating low self esteem, social anxiety, hangxiety, and I feel like crap physically. It took about 12 months of levelling out when I stopped. The thing is it's society in general, especially in this country, that has a problematic relationship with alcohol that is dressed up as normal behaviour. Julius Caesar even commented about it. So switched to just scotch and water. And you picked it, open a bottle I finish it. The problem is, I think, putting things in our mouths. We are addicted to putting shit in our mouth. Same with smoking. I saw that in a dream one night. Alcohol is the only thing we can sit and sip on for hours. We will not do it with water, coffee, any other drink. Anyway, thank you. Finished my last bottle last night so I'll get through today and see how I go tonight. As you say, set targets. I'll try. None tonight.
