be an emotionally intelligent parent: - show them instead of telling them. - be positive, choose love. - RESPECT yourself and others. treat others with kindness. use kind language when you address your mother. - respect property, which creates a culture of emotional intelligence in the home as well - cooperate and obey.

Dr. Paul, we LOVE these 3 rules! We just posted these in our family "discussion board" and are implementing them as we speak! We explained each to my kids (4 & 6) and also expounded on the "cooperate and obey" rule by explaining they can DISOBEY anyone with authority IF they intimidate, threaten, or lie to try to get them to do anything naughty or to get them to go alone with them. It's basically implied but we felt it was important enough to take it further with such young kids so they don't feel forced to obey an authority figure if the authority figure is using their power to take advantage of someone. Thanks for this video, Dr. Paul!

Mirshad Morgan, you are welcome. As you know, this is not a one time event. You can come back to this topic as they mature and use different language. Love that you posted them for reinforcement.

Thank you so much for the work you and Vickie are doing. I draw so much strength from the two of you. As I parent my two boys not only without the help of their dad, but in spite of him making everything hard for all three of us. I so love the respect you two show for everyone involved, perhaps especially the child’s experience. That has always felt appropriate to me, so I appreciate the validation. Also, you are a funny guy! Love the facial expressions and general sense of humor. What delightful, smart and interesting people from which to learn the truth about the important things in life. #superfanlol

You want to know one of the greatest truths in our known universe? You can gather all the most intelligent people from various fields together and have them brainstorm a list of possible outcomes and consequences for a given situation ... and almost ALWAYS, the actual outcome / consequence will be something that no one even thought of. True! There is a lot packed into that little "statement ..." perhaps my favorite part (or most relevant part to me!) is not to spend / waste your time ruminating over a scary situation that has the possibility of many adverse outcomes ... because even if the outcome isn't anything you wanted, I, again, can guarantee that ALMOST ALWAYS the actual outcome will be something completely different than what your brain was focusing on so intently. So why waste the time and the energy? There are just so many things packaged neatly in that ... I love it.

The tools you provide are priceless. I know many supposedly grown up adults that didnt get this emotional intelligence from their parents and have grown up emotionally deprived and lacking in respect, for theirselves and others, respect for property and respect for authority. The whole modeling for cooperation and obeying the law has no meaning for them. After listening to your video, it is so clear it sticks out like a sore thumb.

@@LiveOnPurposeTV We have a 5 year old, 3.5 year old and a 8 month old baby. We always spoon feed the 5 year old because most of the time she doesn't want to eat the main dishes by herself. She will just sit there and not touch the food unless we feed her. She eats healthy snacks by herself fine and occasionally will eat a few bites by herself of the main dish. Her 3 year old brother ate most of his main dishes by himself until recently he is following her behavior and just sits there in front of the food. We have tried giving smaller portions, making her sit by the table until she is done for two weeks, excercising more, eating together as a whole family more often, tried not encouraging food just enjoying the food with conversation about anything but the food (which she loves and could be talking and talking but still the food is not eaten). We are out of ideas and would greatly appreciate if you could make a video of how to encourage her to eat by herself.

I have been really enjoying your videos. Everything you say normally rings true. I do want to point out that people are more upset about the lack of accountability of police who shoot unarmed adults and children. Most of the time they are people of color, sometimes they are not. Police officers have a very difficult job and most are amazing and understanding people. That doesn't however mean that there isn't room for improvement in training and accountability. Please consider the lives lost and families destroyed. No one is trying to pick on the cops, they are trying to point out a systemic issue.

Good morning. I just find your channel so helpful to our family and we appreciate your intelligence using it to help others family . Just a quick question should I be sharing the video with my three children . One of them 10-year-old who is very emotional child. My two older boys they cooperate they are at stage 2 I believe . But my daughter she is at stage one talks back and have no respect for others at all . Not sure where to start . Do you recommend time out when they’re being disrespectful and not cooperating at all . Lashing out mean hurtful words when you take away privileges Thank you 🙏

Christina Odishou, you can watch the videos with your kids if you think it would be helpful. Many parents have done so and they have had deep conversations with their children and the have learned something. Sometimes kids and especially teenagers, are more open to hearing something from a person who is not their parent.
@j.niccicoffie3272

I'd like to see a video on how parents or kids can think about and handle situations where the authority figure is requesting something we/kids view as wrong, or disagree with. How should kids disagree respectfully or when are they right to disobey? My spouse wants our kids to be critical thinkers and not blindly obey authority (even us!), but I feel my kids should obey me-regardless whether they agree with my request or want to do it- because I am the parent.
@LiveOnPurposeTV
@LiveOnPurposeTV Год назад
J. Nicci Coffie, seems like a simple explanation should suffice. As kids get older we spend more time in conversations so they understand why we ask them to do certain things. There should be a certain level of trust that the parent is working in the best interest of the child. Sounds like you and your husband need to do some more work in deciding how you are going to parent.

These rules are amazing and I'm still working on it myself and my son, I was wondering if you can do a video about how to help a child express their emotions to someone such as a parent or to a teacher. And not being so reserved about their feelings when something is bothering them such as at home or about school bullying.. What can be the best way for them to tell the teacher about bullying and not be afraid to talk about it to her or a parent?? I'd really appreciate it if you make a video on this topic!!! Yes, please. My daughter has been harassed and bullied at school but never told a teacher or guidance counselor because she said “she couldn’t trust anyone at school.” It’s heartbreaking and I want her to be able to manage some of it herself. I finally had to intervene after weeks of this but it would’ve helped to have her speak up with confidence and conviction. She’s always afraid it’ll get worse. I’m learning that her intuition is correct, the school doesn’t always have her back. I’m working on that with the school. But I want her to at least TRY to communicate what bothers her to her peers and to escalate to teachers if direct communication to students doesn’t work. Thank you for addressing this problem. I know it’s s big one in my district.

What if your spouse is the one who is constantly modeling these negative behaviors? I just feel so defeated with trying to be the positive parent when the other parent insists on not being positive. I feel like I'm always trying to clean up his "parenting messes." I'm always being judged as the mother, "why does she act this way?" I'm not trying to throw him under the bus here. I'm just so frustrated at going two steps forward and two steps back. I shouldn't have to raise him too!

Since my daughter turned 13 now 14, and has started high school, she has become very negative, saying and thinking things she knows we don't, nor have never said or done. Example: I hate...so and so. or I hope she.... insert negative action. How do I help bring her back when she also acts as if she agree with any advice I try to give? Thank you again for all you do!

Hi Dr. Paul. My 4 year old only daughter can't take losing. She will get so angry and so sad she's crying while fuming. She only plays with me and her dad since the pandemic but she can't take it when we play a simple game of snakes and ladders and she loses so my husband keeps on making her win.=(

Put the language on her level and with three year olds, you have a small window with their attention. You have lots of time so don't stress. You got this, queenSummerKeli.

Practise it at home. Not a stressful event. Start off with 5 minute increments of sitting and listening. And gradually increase. Get them used to sitting round the dinner table. I have 10 kids and they have all learned to sit quietly during church. I don't expect perfection. Everytime they show improved behaviour during church etc, offer a reward. When they have a not so good time, say, that's a shame, I know it's hard but you're such a trooper and I just know you'll get it next time.

I was trying to find the most appropriate video to ask this, so I hope this one isn't too obscure. My one year old step son wants to be held and coddled A LOT and becomes very irritable and will tantrum if his want is not met; to the point of banging his head on the floor or crying so hard that he vomits. It's very terrifying! He often wants to be held at the most inopportune times. He has no structure at his mother's house and she gives in to him on all things because she doesn't want to hear him cry. She has him most of the time, so is there anything we can do on our end, at all, to make better this situation with a tantruming one year old or do we need to ride it out until he is older?

Just in this brief explanation I can see that there are a lot of moving parts here. For such a young child to be exposed to the difficult dynamics of a multi-household family is challenging. I think the best thing you can do is to create the most sane, stable, loving environment that you can within your own household. You don't control what happens in the other home, so pay attention where you do have some control - in your own home. Keep watching with some of the other videos here, especially in the positive parenting playlist. Best wishes to you and your family! DrPaul

I found your video really interesting and helping but I see a risk on the last “obey” rule. Just because the request comes from an authority person, this must not be reasonable. Authority is being used by certain people on purpose to manipulate children or even adults. I would rather educate my kid to understand what is wrong and right (covered by the first two rules), entitle them to take own decision regardless of the authority level of the requestor. Your “obey” rule would be valid in an hypothetical world where people are all nice and caring for each other which is far from our world.

J.D, true, but I think about how situations get out of control when authority is snubbed. We can't control anyone else but ourselves.

I understand that we should teach kids to obey persons of authority but how do we teach them to also say "No" to persons of authority who asks them to do something that violates Rule 1 or 2? Like a doctor or teacher or an adult in the family who asks them to do something inappropriate?
@LiveOnPurposeTV
@LiveOnPurposeTV 4 года назад
That is an important aspect of the rule, Allison Yim, so thank you for asking for clarification. That is where the "right and reasonable" part comes in. If a person in authority (or any adult) asks a child to cooperate with something that makes them feel uncomfortable, that is not right. And asking a child to do something inappropriate is unreasonable. I hope this makes sense.

N i get it she just likes to play like that but i always tell her to stop and that hitting isn't good but i always feel confused. Is there ever a time when its ok to hit? Such as during horse play? Or should it never be allowed... ever...im speaking through a worried im gonna mess up my child mom perspective lol
@LiveOnPurposeTV
@LiveOnPurposeTV 5 лет назад
Take a deep breath, Binky Music Channel. In general, hitting is not good. I have sword fought with my kids when little and played like that. It is a parents choice what they allow. Some people think that if what is happening is done in fun and no one is hurt then it is o.k. When hitting is not fun and it hurts then it is time to switch to another activity. If you think your daughter needs to get some aggression out, you could have a boxing bag or pillow or something she is allowed to punch. In general, hitting is o.k. when we are protecting ourselves, but those situations are far and few between.

Writing at 3 years old is not usually a sign that something is wrong. Check with the child's doctor and ask his or her opinion, jenny queen lairellakpam. Also, if you are in the US, there are birth to 3 programs through most elementary schools so I would check with them to see if he could be tested and they might offer some help. See if your area has a Ready for Kindergarten class going on.

Now, how do you get a 2 y/o and 1 y/o to safely entertain themselves (without just screaming from playpens) when you need to, say, clean up after their lunch, make their dinner, food their laundry, etc... or - heaven forbid - pay attention for 5 whole minutes to their 5 y/o big sis - who - seriously - must be a saint of patience, compassion, and understanding.

@LiveOnPurposeTV
@LiveOnPurposeTV 5 лет назад
Yes, Alicia Beers. Practice with them. Kids this young like to role play and then positive reinforcement for acceptable talk. Some parents have a signal that discussion is over and if the child is just trying to argue, set up consequences.

I agree to rule one and two, bit he lost me on the point of obeying and rightful police officers. I agree on obeying to police because they might kill you, especially if you are a person of color. But children want to cooperate, if they get positive constructive, nurturing attention. I don't want my child to obey but only the case in very crucial moments of danger. Respect and cooperation is enough for the most moments of life. Unfortunately a lot of persons in authority position confuse respect with fear and expect children to obey without building a relationship first.

@@LiveOnPurposeTV I said it in jest. That had no bearing on your tutorial. I'm going through some behavioral issues with my 6 year old son which led me to your RU-vid clips. Good substance, very educational and reinforcing. The behavioral issues get worse with his use of technology. We take it away, and he plays it alot less. But when he's not playing it he obsesses about the next time he plays it instead of spending time playing sports or going outside. It's as if he is in a virtual waiting room waiting to play again. I'm doing some research on it and technology is impacting children's dopamine levels more and more. Scary stuff
@LiveOnPurposeTV
@LiveOnPurposeTV 5 лет назад
Some children are affected by technology more than others. If he has that obsessive tendency, then maybe you just don't have electronics in the home. It is an option. Good luck with your research and decision.

What do you mean by emotional intelligence? Do you mean being of the male gender and feeling that it is okay even though it is seemed to be weak? And then feeling like crap because you show normal human emotions Then feeling like more crap because you feel the human race shouldn’t even exist because of how shit we are for ourselves and for the planet And we just don’t function like how everyone thinks we should act Yeah idk maybe that or something
@LiveOnPurposeTV
@LiveOnPurposeTV 3 года назад
NateR 1309, emotional intelligence has nothing to do with gender. It is the ability to learn and apply knowledge in order to solve problems. You are never wrong about how you feel and need to work through those emotions in order to hopefully get to a better place.
