How to Raise Your HDL & Lower Your Triglycerides (NOT what you Think)

I've had people who have tried for years to lower their triglycerides and raise their HDL by eating diets recommended by such websites as WebMD and Mayo Clinic, come to me after they failed. It seems that no matter how hard they tried, they just couldn't improve these proven risk markers for Heart Attack and Stroke.
Turns out that these people were not stupid or lazy or gluttons, the advice they had taken was just WRONG. The AMA/AHA/ADA/WebMD/Mayo Clinic have been giving ignorant advice on this subject for decades. Their advice would be laughable, had it not killed and crippled so many...
If you want to lower your Triglycerides and raise your HDL, and in the process slash your risk of heart attack and stroke, the you need to do the opposite of what these organizations tell you.

Great! Then your LDL must be about 240-250, right? (which is a great thing, since LDL is basically the cholesterol transported from the liver to the rest of the body, meaning you'll have more building & repairing material to spare, better cognitive function and better testosterone).

Gursel, may I know what your LDL is/was? I was pre diabetic 6 months ago with total cholesterol 235. Now my A1C is 4.8 my total cholesterol is 397, HDL is 64. LDL 333 and triglycerides are 99. I want these numbers to be closer to yours.

My wife went for her 3month a1c blood work yesterday. Last time her triglycerides were over 600 yesterday they were at 133. That is after only 11weeks of doing healthy keto we found our new life style.

Lyndol Redwine, that fantastic..! I can relate, my wife Tiffany and I have also improved our triglycerides, lowered our A1C and lost a bunch of weight between our February (when started keto) and June blood work. Our Dr. wasn't too happy about us doing keto and wanted to put me on "another" diabetes med in February but I said no I will see what keto will do instead. In June he said that he was very impressed and asked for info on keto. So we sent him to Dr. B's YT and a few others that we use. BTW after 10 years for me and 21 for Tiff we both no longer have to use insulin and Tiff has cut her Metformin in half thanks to keto. We think KETO ROCKS..!
@Redwine5

Fred West yeah lol I forgot to mention her a1c lol. It's at a 5.9. They dr said he wants to wait and see what her next one says but he said he will b cutting her meds down after that. She takes a1000 mg in morning and 1000 in the evening. She is ready to get off them. When we told dr we was doing keto he said that's good just do the healthy keto and just started explaining how ketosis works lol like I never heard about it before lol. I guess he couldn't bring it up before on his own but now we brung it up he will talk about it. I'm really enjoying this way of living. It took me awhile to adjust but most of my problems was salt. I never liked it and barely ever had it. So I had to get use to taking it because I was just so weak at first. I know when I don't get enough salt now lol

Pills were hurting my liver, too! I have started following a low carb, low sugar diet and triglycerides are coming down in less than a month... However, can I go into a full Keto Diet? How can I know my liver will respond well? Thanks again. Keep up the good work and God Bless You! Hernan

Dr. Berry... I decided to get back on the low carb WOE in February and stop taking my prescribed atorvastatin . From last year, I cut my triglycerides nearly in half to 114 and raised my HDL to 50. I had open heart surgery when I was 42. My HDL was 35. I was told that my HDL was genetically determined, and there was nothing I could do about it. At the time. I ate high carb low fat as recommended. Recently, I was very surprised to see my HDL at 68! The change I made was higher fat with lower carbs. However my fasting glucose was a little high, so I’m going to reduce more carbs and add more fat and recheck in 3 months. I just can’t believe that I was told by the medical profession that there was nothing I could do. We have really been misinformed!

I’ve been on keto for over two years now. Started at 248 pounds and pre-hypertension and rising blood pressure. Metabolic panel reflected the aforementioned. After two years I now have have much much lower triglycerides and higher HDL. Total cholesterol is 211 but given the other noted improvements my physician is not concerned. My weight fluctuates around 200 lbs for a 6’ 60 yr old plus male and my blood pressure is back to normal. I feel better than I have for 20 years. I eat steak regularly with the fat, salads, make keto desserts and do not have the craving for sugar and carbs that I had when I started. And yes sometimes I cheat but ultimately I get back on track get my weight right back down within a few days. Unfortunately barely a week goes by when I hear the same tired misinformation about eating healthy. It has been so ingrained in people’s minds for so long that even though they remain obese they can’t see the real culprit.

@rokker333
@rokker333 2 года назад
@@tsuyax6054 I don't know. I feel good on keto, lost 20kg and am on a normal weigh. Some blood work did much better but blood fat is bad. Also, I am 50 years old and it is possible that I get dyslipidemia. So, it may come from that. Nevertheless, the easy advise of all YT doctors that LDL and triglycerides will lower and HDL will raise does not seem questionable to me. Don't really know how to proceed from here. I think, first I cut out all the high saturated fat from sausage and dairy. Maybe I go back to a low carb diet with only seed oils. Like 70-100gr healthy carbs, no saturated fat more unsaturated fat. This is how I started my weight loss. It also works for that purpose.

AND... want to prescribe you to death with so many pills that have side affects that cause you other problems. keto diet & fasting is working for me thank god i feel so much better running on empty. (fasting) My belly fat is burning off and i can see wee willie for the firs time in about 8 years.(blush) i have high bp and while on keto and fasting religiously bp is dropping also. cholesterol has always been good. I am so excited that i have finally found something that works! So i have decided once and for all to loose weight and come off these pills and doctors. no offense :) I have hypnotized my self into believing that hunger pain and stomach growling is FAT BURNING.

I am 60 y/o. My cholesterol has always been below 200, HDL in the 30's, LDL 120+, trg 80 - 153, always avoiding fats and eating "good carbs", pasta, oatmeal and fruit every morning, never egg yokes, etc. In May my trg/HDL ratio was 3.16 (117/37), with a "normal" cholesterol of 179. I cut carbs to an occasional treat, started eating more meat, use butter, bacon, cheese, whole eggs, half and half in coffee. I did increase sardines- before I ate a good amount of fish already. I also increased vegetables. Now, my tg/HDL ratio is 1.2 (64/53), with a cholesterol of 189. My A1C is 5.4. I didn't exercise on purpose to attribute results to nutrition. I also started taking 4000 units of D3, and a K2. D3 went from 30 to 48. You would think that increasing fat intake would spike blood fat, it didn't. Thank you doctor for your advice

Carbs, especially moreso than certain, but wide range of veggies and meat, are what gets one to the diabetic state if so predisposed! Some can be 300 and never get it. Like cholesterol, you need a certain amount for energy for cells. I thought oats were good, but they are to be steel rolled or something like that, but that Dr. Laundry says no to oats. There are fad diets. Be moderate in everything, except what we need more of or not at all. Be careful of RU-vid video doctors, also. Read lots of sources. Sadly, though not trained to be experts, we have to almost be anymore.

BTW, I just posted a comment and wanted your opinion. I forgot to tell you what Keto has done for me. I no longer have high blood pressure. My doctor doesn't even know I stopped my high blood pressure med. Lisinopil. I was put on Aldactone (generic) because I was getting dark facial hair on my chin, neck and upper lip. I have high testoserone and I guess that what caused that, but it's slowing down in growth. However, when I got the generic Aldactone, I read about this medication before I started it. I always do. I noticed this drug is also used for high blood pressure so basically I was on 2 blood pressure meds. My gynecologist prescribed this to me and my family doctor is aware I'm on it. Not one of them caught the fact that I was on 2 blood pressure meds. So, threw away the Lisinopil and my blood pressure is perfectly normal. It was running low on those 2 meds. I started Keto at 233 lbs. I'm now 187 and I'm 5'7 1/2". I rescused a beautiful female blonde Labrador a few months ago and I don't have a big backyard so I walk her everyday. I do all my own yard work and here in Oklahoma, it's been in the 90's to 100 degrees, but losing just those 46 lbs., I can take the heat. My immune system has always been awesome. I haven't had even a common cold in over 10+ years, I have no allergies, and the last time I had the flu was 32 years ago. One more thing. I suffered from anxiety since I was 18. I'd have panic attacks when I'd try to drive on highways. It really ruined my life and my therapist had me go on disability because he wanted me away from stress. I owned a medical transcription business which was pretty stressful. Anyway... I went to a dentist that was one hour from me. I asked my 84 year old mother to drive me. When she came to pick me up, she asked if I wanted to try driving. I thought, "What the heck. Mom is 84 and I'm 61 and we've lived a good life so if I kill us, it will be okay". Ha Ha Ha. No, I wouldn't crash. So I started driving and heading out to the highway and just waited for the feeling of a panic attack coming on. It never did. Keto, I feel, cured my brain. Getting off sugar and bad carbs healed my brain. I drove all the way to my dentist and all the way back. That was a miracle.

Lisinopril is not just for blood pressure; it also protects the kidney. Your doctor is trying to save you from chronic kidney disease, which is highly prevalent among diabetics. That’s why it’s smart to always talk with your doctor before stopping a medication, or at least notify their nurse or support staff.

On Keto about 3 months. I enjoy a mental clarity and stability that I’ve always craved. It used to be, when my brain’s fuel was carbs, that i would have many ups and downs emotionally. I would be exhausted, eating all the time more carbs with the crazy up and down, all day. Now, emotionally more even throughout the day, and recognize I must be fat adapted and my brain is burning ketones. Loving it. Continual success for you and congratulations on your success.

keto isn't for everyone and everyone reacts to it differently. The diet can cause kidney stones, causes LDL to increase, increases constipation, etc. It's an extreme and very restricted diet and is not the panacea that everyone thinks it is. Alot of the folks that comment on here seem to have improved their health mostly due to significant weight loss and are lauding the effects of the diet when it's their loss of weight and body fat that likely improved things. Not saying that keto doesn't have an overall advantage for those that are genetically sensitive to blood sugar or that the medical community might be spouting the typical food pyramid to knowingly encourage illness because both of these conclusions are likely true. I am so sorry about your twin brother passing away😢. I lost my brother when he was 47. Died in his sleep from a massive heart attack. He was also diabetic with all those same health issues. His death occurred over 24 years ago and crushed me. I became a holistic nutritionist so I could help other T2 diabetics from facing the same fate. I had to dig deep into the research and rely on my female intuition and common sense to uncover the truth about what diets are false narratives and which ones are life savers for people who have a genetic code for metabolic syndrome. And low carb and healthy fats are the key to overriding a metabolism that produces insulin resistance so readily. Keep on that path. I am 73 now and still vibrant and continue to guide others who wish to follow a diet that will not have them pushing up daisies at an age that we all should be enjoying life. My brother is my guardian angel who gave me a purpose. I hope yours can do the same for you. Be well and the best to you ❤️.

Happy day! My cholesterol results after 6 months on Keto..... TRYG 59mg/dl (40-160), HDL 70 mg/dl (>35) Great results. LDL 145 ant total CHOL 220. Last year before keto, my LDL 135, total 208. TRYG108, HDL 58. I can only see a big change in TRYG and HDL which is quite interesting. My liver and kidney good. Everything is fine, bye bye to my menstrual cramps.... This is true. I spent 2 decades trying to follow the AMA/AHA diet, avoiding red meat, egg yolks, saturated fat, and cholesterol. HDL the entire time was bound between 30 and 45, and triglycerides were consistently >100. On whole plant foods diet, my trigs went over 400. 6 months after switching to keto, my HDL went to 92 and trigs came down to 38. Incredible. The dietary guidelines from USDA/AHA/AMA/etc simply have zero efficacy. They are either hopefully lost in their own cognitive bias bubble or corrupted by external influences. Or both.

As a point of reference for those watching/reading... Go beyond biomarkers if you REALLY want to know your condition and therefore risk of cardiovascular disease. - Over the past 8 years, I have developed plaque build-up in my carotid artery (as determined using ultrasound) - My 1st CAC scan done on 2/2/2022 resulted in a CAC scope of 130, so I do have some calcium build up in my heart - My total cholesterol for the past 15 years has averaged 221 - My LDL level has averaged 142 - My triglycerides have averaged 125 - My HDL has averaged 54 - Therefore my average triglyceride to HDL ratio is 2.3 (which is in/near the "ok" range) - I have "Pattern A" lipid size (the larger size which is supposed to present less risk) - I don't have metabolic syndrome - My blood glucose, insulin, A1c, and OGTT/Kraft insulin has always been normal - There is a history of heart disease/stroke in my family - There is a history of diabetes in my family - I have refused to take a statin during this time - For most of that time, I have eaten the Standard American Diet (SAD) diet. - I'm in my late 50's; BMI under 25, and very near my college graduating weight - I now supplement with 1000 mg/day of fish oil, which has brought my triglycerides down to 89 the past 2 years - I have self-referred for a CIMT scan soon to assess my "cardiovascular age" My message: just because your biomarkers are "in some ideal range" does not mean you don't or won't develop cardiovascular disease. If you really want to know your cardiovascular condition, get a carotid artery scan or a CIMT to check for plaque that can lead to strokes, and a CAC scan to check for heart issues. PS... A stress test won't necessarily tell you the condition in either location unless it is really bad. You can self-refer for these tests in most major cities and they cost less than $150 each. Also, you can use the ACVSD calculator from the American Heart Association to assess your risk level.

Great video. I'd like to add that a terrific metric that is important is the RATIO of Triglycerides to HDL. When you divide your Triglycerides by your HDL, you want the resulting number to be less than 3.0, with less than 2.0 better, and in the 1.0 range better still. Note that this equation doesn't even consider LDL, which mainstream media has painted as the evil, bogeyman of your lipid profile. But LDL isn't pure evil. Rather, it's the KIND of LDL that matters to health. The bad kind of LDL is a lot of very small particles in your bloodstream, and the good kind is fewer, large, "fluffier" size particles.

I started to see my numbers also trend badly at last check up and so started my Clean keto + IF lifestyle changes 4.5 months ago. I’m down 49lbs and most importantly my TG have dropped to 89, HDL to over 50. LDL is slightly higher than their cutoff but doc said not to worry for another year. She cut my BP meds down and I no longer meet the 3/5 criteria for metabolic syndrome. A1C is safely down to 5.1 now. I have a goal to lose another 20-30 lbs to get to where I was in my 20s.

Thank you, Dr. Berry. I've been a health-conscious nutrition and fitness junkie since my late twenties. Which means when I ate clean, I ate low fat, high veg, fruit, and whole grains religiously. End result being at 70 II now have all 5 markers for metabolic syndrome PLUS elevated HS-CRP. I'm so glad I found you. Since June this year I've dropped 21 lbs of scale weight, the first 12 on WW, until my body rebelled and demanded more fat (late August). I gave her what she wanted, which led me to LCHF, then keto, then ketovore, and now BBB&E. In the process another 9 lbs went to Fat Heaven (teehee). Hello Dr. Berry, thanks for one more very helpful video. I am sorry for taking a lot of space with my comment, my question will be at the end. I started carnivore (plus eggs, cream, butter, cheese, olive oil and coffee) in March 2020. In November 2019 my cholesterol was HDL 73, LDL 143, VLDL 18.6, Triglycerides 93. After 5 months carnivore, every marker got worse: HDL 62, LDL 296, VLDL 35, Triglycerides 176. My nutritionist (I am in Chile and I could only find one LC/HF nutritionist here and to be honest, I don't completely trust her.) said it was because I ate too much ribeye and not enough omega 3. Since August 2020 I have removed all dairy (substitute with coconut milk and added coconut oil) and stopped eating ribeye (only other cuts of beef), have been taking omega 3, L-Glutamine, Magnesium and amino acids. My nutritionist suspects leaky gut. She asked for intermittent fasting, but I was losing so much weight and so quickly and I was so hungry that we stopped that. I am still losing weight since I eliminated almost all my fats. I am always hungry for the same reason. I am not happy, I cry a lot. My question to you is, what do YOU attribute my rise in cholesterol? I am due for exams again this month and I dread to see the results. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

HDL went up from 49 to 69, my triglycerides from 49 to 23! I know it's nothing! VLDL 8, LDL 90, triglycerides/HDL ratio very low. hair, skin, energy, testosterone levels, metabolism, clarity, all health went up.

Last year I increased my saturated fats with beef, bacon, eggs and fatty fish. I hadn’t started keto/carnivore yet. My overall cholesterol went to 269 from 224, ldl went to 144 from 134. HDL was 112 up from 92. Fasting glucose prior to starting carnivore was sometimes 100-119. After 1 month of keto/carnivore, fasting glucose is 70-79. Not feeling my age of 65. Dr. Berry is such an inspiration to me. I am a certified holistic nutritionist but I have found much I was taught is 180 degrees off. Oh yes, triglycerides remained approximately same 79.

I live near Mayo Clinic, and my small town hospital is part of Mayo. I followed low fat for many years. I thought I was fit, but had a heart attack last year at 56. Two stents. My Mayo cardiologist suggested I continue low fat, just do better. Did that for five months. My weight began to balloon. Five weeks ago, I emptied my pantry - everything in the trash. Since, I've done strict low carb, zero processed/nothing in a box or can, lots of sardines (only exception to can rule!), strive for zero fructose, zero glucose. My appetite went way down. I've lost around 30 lbs., down to 192 lbs, lowest I've weighed in many years. Feel great. Got blood work done today. For first time ever, my TRI/HDL ratio is 'in range'!! Only LDL is out of range, and not by much. Only other prob was low on chloride (prolly cuz I used to get lots of salt out of processed foods), so I am now going to salt my food liberally. I love the low carb lifestyle. It has the effect of a diet, but doesn't feel like a diet. Feel fine (felt run down for a few weeks, but that is getting better), look way better, more optimistic about my chances for coronary artery disease to not ruin my life. BTW, the PVCs ( a type of arrythmia have gone away). So: 1) Real foods ONLY - zero processed 2) Low carbs - no bread, pastry, rice, pasta, pizza, etc., and zero sugar 3) Lots of sardines to get Omega3 in balance with Omega6 4) Spinach, avocados, broccoli, cauliflower, etc, no starchy, no fruit. That simple - been working great for me. So far so good. Good luck to all.

Had been diagnosed with hypertension first and seemed to me that something was wrong but was told it was "just something that happens as we age". Started on Lisinopril and BP controlled. Had chronically low HDL for many years which I assumed was genetic. Did fairly well for a few years. But then developed high blood sugars and started on Lantus after Metformin did little to help. So I started researching on my own and discovered the Keto diet. Followed that assiduously and was able to come off Metformin and Lantus insulin completely and have reduced my Lisinopril to 5 mg daily and anticipating being able to come off it this next year. Also am on the lowest dose possible of Lipitor and going to possibly come off that as well. All of this I attribute to the low carb diet (~ 20 gm per day) Also have had significant wt loss and feel ten times better, both mentally and physically!

Since I stopped worrying about cholesterol two years ago I’ve gone ketogenic diet and my triglycerides/HDL went from 4.97 to 2.2! Not going to quit until I get it to 1/1

Thank you for mentioning LDL. My other numbers are great, but my PCP reported my cholesterol is too high. Also, started a keto diet with bone broth 2 weeks ago and my fibromyalgia is already better. I only had 12 pounds to lose but am already seeing the scale go down. Not bad for 61+!

How are you feeling now? I'm 59 and just found out I have high LDL. Scary. My triglycerides and HDL are really good. I do keto/LC and intermittent fasting.

@@suzannecarrier287 I Wouldn't worry about your LDL number as long as your triglycerides are low and your HDL is good then you are Fine!😉 LDL is NOT dangerous or unhealthy. It's Only the VLDL that causes problems. Practicing low carb/high fat (Keto) most often results in high LDL. Nothing to be concerned about as long as your ratio of Tryclerides to HDL is good!!😎

Hi Dr. Berry, I’m in Ontario Canada and want to say thank you for your channel. Really happy I found your channel because you explain and give so much detail that it helps to understand….thank you. If I may ask your thoughts on my lipid panel please. I done my blood work February 3, 2023 and my triglycerides went from 1.81 (2022) to .79 (2023) which I thought was great. HDL went from 1.55 to 1.79 and LDL went from 3.43 to 5.81 and total cholesterol went from 5.80 to 7.96, Of course my doctors is concern about LDL and total cholesterol and suggested meds….I said no I’m going to keep going with carnivore. I don’t feel the numbers are crazy high even tho there’s heart issues in my family. I’m only a 40 mg hypertension pill that I started way before I knew carnivore which I want to get rid off. I’m 60 years old, feel great even tho I need to loose about 50 more lbs but no medical concerns. Thanks for your time and keeping us informed.

I am at a loss. I have been grain free, sugar free and low carb for five months. I have lost 38 pounds and am only one pound away from my goal weight. Yet my triglycerides went from 122 to 163 in three months. My HDL went from 60 to 64. All of my liver markers have improved. I understand and have watched your videos regarding the cholesterol increase but how concerned should I be regarding the triglyceride increase? I am only eating healthy fats as you teach. I truly have not deviated from this lifestyle in any way, shape or form.

Hey Dr. Ken, I just got my blood work back and my results show that my triglycerides= 83, HDL= 70, & LDL= 196. The nurse practitioner says that my cholesterol is very high. Should I be worried? Everything else in the blood work was fine (no diabetes, no HTN, etc). I’m in my 30s, am very active, & eat a relatively lower carb diet (not full Keto). Thanks for your help!
