@11:54 gold flakes on the tape are clearly seen. @12:13 you can see where the plating has been pulled off. so the tape test worked and proved that plating was removed. you need to completely clean the fingers down to bare copper, which was not done here.
@e5frog
@e5frog 7 лет назад
What's the resulting thickness - does it hold or is it just "make up"? With the thinner and simpler chemical gold we have at work, there's a lot more work involved and it takes a lot longer time. "Fingers" should be electro plated with "hard gold" to last.

Looks like some gold has been removed on the tape!! Do you not remove all traces of solder from pads before plating, ie return to base copper? (otherwise the adhesion will be compromised by the solder residues). This must be achieved by using a chemical solder stripper to remove any intermetallic formed by the solder contamination, then to mechanically prepare the exposed copper again as in initial plating for Ni/Au operation. Then replate as in the video. I was an Industrial Chemist in a PCB shop for many years until retirement.

I don't know if you're still active, but would it be possible to use this method on the Nintendo DS Cartridge pins? If so, video please ?! It would be absolutely amazing to see the process and restoration of very worn pins. DS cartridges naturally over the years corrode and there will be wear and tear leading to gold platings being gone. Also I think others would highly be interested in this as well. I for sure am 👀😄

Sir, I have a question regarding the comparison between liquid tin and liquid gold. I have a similar kit that I've had for a while and I am currently out of liquid gold my question is can liquid 10 in combination with the liquid nickel be used to replace these cartridge teeth.? Basically I just want to know if the same thing that is in your video being done can be done with liquid tin even though I understand gold is better what I want to know is if it's worth it or even possible thanks for your time I love your product and the video was actually really fun to watch and inspiring. The process looks much easier than I thought it would. We'll bring our finger repair in-house. The end result here is quite poor though. The surface was left very rough by the method you used to remove the solder. I would be concerned that the gold would be worn away in those rough areas. I see no reason to dab at the solder. A wiping motion would give you a smooth surface.

With this my rather large collection of NES and SNES games can live on forever. All my games still work, this is a more of a surgical repair as the gold contacts wear off over time. No one knows for certain how long a well maintained cart can last, which all of mine are. I figure we may have 10-15 years left before the majority of games in the wild lose their finish. This would bring them all back indefinitely. Cracked and eroded solder points would be the next or first thing to go depending on cart storage.Definitly will be purchasing your kit as well as a permanent supply of the solutions and gold so that in the event my 200+ carts face mass extinction in the next decade or 2 ill have more than enough to fix them all and as long as needed until my eventual death. Figure I got another 30-35 years and I intend to game the fuck out of all of them.

I came here for this very reason. I happened upon a lot of NES carts that have bad rust/corrosion on contacts and was planning on refurbishing them. The solder joints look to be okay but I may re-solder if it doesn't work after performing a method such as this.

These items are available from either Amazon or directly from 'Becker Industries' - and for substantially less money. Becker sells 2-3 inexpensive fully functional kits for small scale projects (one w/o a power supply in case you have a bench PSU already - which coincidentally is your best bet due to flexibility). These small kits run ~$59.99-$89.99. The exact one in the video is $375, and does come with Nickle & Gold solutions, as well as the much lauded and fabled 'Charmeleon Eyelash Dust'. If you're careful, you can get everything you need for quite a bit less (if you're really diligent, up to perhaps *50% less*). Keep in mind, you will generally need to purchase Nickle & Gold (and/or Silver if you like) solutions/gels & any prep chemicals recommended - separately (I believe two of the Becker kits come w/a small amount of gold @ their price). You'll need to make sure you get ones that work with *this* plating method (and they can get expensive!). Look around hard, triple check it's compatible & make sure you're not paying more than you should (especially on Gold & Silver solutions/gels). I looked into this for repairing NES/SNES/GB cartridge fingers w/excessive wear or full loss of plating (I have an NES cart of 'Final Fantasy' w/pins that have seen better days). Now that I see what can be done, I will likely plate everything on them... RCA jacks, connector pins... you name it. After you plate electronic components/jacks/connectors, I recommend using 'DeoxIT Gold G5' in whatever form works for your application (spray, liquid) on all the newly plated gold parts. It helps protect gold surfaces at a molecular level and further enhances connections. It's not cheap, but it's not expensive either and all of DeoxIT's products are renowned for their tried & tested high performance. Though many of us have specific projects in mind, these tools can really be used to plate many things: car badging/logos, jewelry... as long as the base material isn't aluminum (uses a different process). Even if you have to prep the surface a specific way or plate it w/nickel or another metal first (prior to plating w/gold). Now get your gear... and go plate the world! Or, just fix/pimp out your Game Consoles & games like me.

How much current is it? I wonder, because maybe some precautions are required not to destroy the electronic components. Like if you want to repair the plating of some finger structures of a carbon keyboard, it is hard not to touch the other pole of that switch and reversed 4,5 Vor even 7.5V might destroy the connected IC.

What I want to know is " Do you solder the entire gold pad with solder?". Is that required?
@xXmobiusXx1
@xXmobiusXx1 3 года назад
No you want to remove all the solder, you will have staining from the solder, but if all is removed it should be perfectly smooth. In this video he did not fully remove the solder, it can take multiple passes, and lightly dragging the solder wick is recommended for this procedure, as light as possible. I professionally did this for a previous company I worked for on class 3 boards that where used for aviation. What would happen is when they would go through wave solder for the through hole parts, solder would splash onto the gold pressure contacts and need to be re-plated. It's not hard at all.

Hmmm.... the alternative is to create a replica of the PCB. With low-cost PCB prototyping offered everywhere and free high quality PCB design software available, anyone can do that. It can be done for amounts of money that are still fun. Carts often have very simple PCBs so it shouldn't be that hard to draw a proper replica.
@freespace2dotcom
