How weird. I just posted on the Muay Thai sub reddit the other day that I was struggling with seeing punches and how my defense is super awful

I've noticed this actually during sparring today, it helped me read my partner and block better, my question is regarding head movement, for example, how would I tell the difference between a cross and a right hook purely by looking at his body? Thanks for the video!
@expertboxing
@expertboxing 2 года назад
Hard to tell the difference in the nuance. But generally...a cross has the head/torso dipping more forwards, and a right hook or hayemaker has the head/torso turning more the side (the puncher's left). Personally, I kinda defend against those the same way. Just that a missed hayemaker gives me more countering time.

I am great martial artist and my dad was a boxer. I have been training for my next amateur boxing bout. I came into boxing to improve my accuracy and timing. This smarmy kid (21) who my gym is focused on being the next big thing sparred me today. (very talented) He was throwing combinations like a mad man and he is much tall than me. When I was in range, I couldn't see his punches at all (due to his height) and my coach isn't always into slow sparring. Kid just went at me throwing crazy stuff. Not only were the flurries hard to read, but his height meant that when I was in range, his hands were coming from angles I can't see at all. Kid had this huge mocking grin after my nose got a little bloody. Everybody in the gym knows I am the hardest hitter there and break opponents apart. But, today was a different story... This is all sparring of course. I am in one of those sink or swim gyms, where rough opponents don't always get called out. I always go a bit soft on all my sparring partners, but a lot of guys DGAF and will try to take your head off. Sparring should be about learning, not a war. Luckily, I do have a nice personal coach who knows when to give guys a dressing down. This video helped me greatly. I will start focusing on the techniques here. I highly recommend this video to anyone who is a shorter fighter. I am not very short (5'10/11), but my coach ALWAYS puts me up against tall guys and I eat too many flurries.... Now, I have a tip that can I use and improve myself. Fighting someone taller and breaking into range is nightmare if they are high volume fighter. DON'T LOOK AT THE GLOVE OR ARMS. FOCUS ON THE MOVEMENT OF THE BODY.... WELL SAID SIR!

In the past in street fights I would recognize that a lot of people give signs as to which hand will be getting thrown before it was thrown. Then they would go to throw it and I would always make them miss, sometimes I would quick punch their fist the second it moved forward lol. Some people after a couple of bare fist to bare fist hits they would try to get out of the fight because they couldn't touch me and or because their hand was jacked up. If it went farther and they would fight I would just punch them one time in the ribs game over. I kinda miss fighting. They weren't good fighters. I am not awesome either necessarily, just quick and accurate and have been studying body moment since I was young. Good video 👍 definitely useful.

My coach always told me that while it was wise to pay attention to where they're looking, it was also wise to pay attention to their shoulders. With inexperienced fighters, they're prone to putting too much power in a punch, kick or an action in general. Needless to say, it actually works, and needless to say, I always observe the shoulders and upper body movement when it comes to fist fights.

What do you do when someone punches at an incredible pace? I know a few people who're fast enough at punching that the only way for me to block them is purely on reflex. Since they also possess these high speeds being hit by them would be pretty painful but blocking would be extremely uncomfortable.
@expertboxing
@expertboxing 4 года назад
I have to see some video. Hard to advise based on words at home. At the end of the day, they might actually be faster but skill only makes that difference more apparent.

@@expertboxingI've read once before that the arm can reach speeds upward to 40km/h, roughly (about 11 m/s), if someone has an arm length of a meter, he would be able to do 5 jabs per second easily, considering that 2.x per second isn't that terrifying. I just wonder if there's a type of stance that could help out with both balance (since having my body frantically react to each punch thrown is a major disadvantage in that regard) and have enough range to be able to block the attacks while having to do minimal movement.

Personally i watch their feet from long range because i have long arms, so I can see when they'll throw a punch because they can't hit me if they don't step in. Secondly i watch their shoulders as it shows which hand they will throw. I also watch their eyes as it shows where they're aiming. I also watch their facial expressions and their slightest movements as it shows me they are about to either feint or throw a punch. I also analyse patterns as it shows me what they're most likely to throw. I also set traps to make them throw a punch the counter with what i call a checkmate punch. (For example, Iean in then when i see the jab i lean out and counter with a right hand.This was commonly used by may weather.)

I am doing a different sport which is not striking but more body to body combat (judo). Alot of the players look where they can strike next or where they can land their hands for a grip. You can almost always predict their next move simply by looking at the opponent's eyes... Where is he looking.. upper body.. lower body.. right side of body.. left side.. it works very well and can nearly predict what they will do next before they even start their attempt.
@gp1237
@gp1237 3 года назад
Once you can read their intentions.. countering the attack becomes so much easier.
@grivmonster568
@grivmonster568 3 года назад
In boxing, I use a lot of feint where I look left but I punch right... Or I look down but I punch up! Very effective!!! So at a higher level, not good to look the eyes because if the person see you do that, they will fool you!!
@gp1237
@gp1237 3 года назад
@@grivmonster568 well that's the next step.. how to surprise someone who can read you,.. at a high level, people know eachother .. what they do how they fight. If someone does that you know what to expect. You have to step out of what is common for you and strike randomly sometimes. Again judo and striking are still very different dynamics. Striking is played on the hit. Judo you need to put your hands on someone before you can throw. Sure not looking is great way to fool the opposition for striking, grappling in general.. not so much.

You know that's how you do feinting in boxing right? You can look to the body and act like you're gonna jab down but throw to his head instead

The only thing I’ve been able to read is a round house kick. When they plant that foot to the left it’s a dead give away. Even if they feign a punch or a switch kick, that foot plant gives them away. I’ll be six feet away before they even take their foot off the ground. But the second someone throws a jab I don’t even know it happened 😂.

What i mean is, basically the thing you said, how to beat a better boxer, but i got a great form and technique but in sparring, all get lost, i got good boxing iq out off the ring but inside no, idk bro feel like im lost when im sparring, when i do shadow boxing against the “best guy” or shoulder taps, i often beat him¿ beacuse how fast i am, and my boxing stance and on my toes all the time.. in the ring i get caught every time by him, he see all things, i think its because im tense and dont really think off, what he throwed, oh he blocked my jab with that, next time imma do a cross like that and caught him, but no…
