How to Really Test a Thermocouple

Gas boilers or heaters have a problem that will cause the heat to go off. The pilot light will not stay on since the thermocouple is going bad. Use an electric meter on volts DC to test if the thermocouple is bad. you can also try to re-light the pilot and see if it goes on. Thermocouples can be cleaned, but this is only a short fix. The pilot will go out again over time. Thermocouples are not expensive. The best thing to do is just change it. This way you do not have any more problems in the future.

Good work man! I like to do my work to be proud of myself... And I detail the work( electrical connections... Teflon tape...) In the way that it is not noticeable that I was there... I like to call it, the phantom technician... My master told me that it is a good job!

Thank you for the support! and i couldn't agree more. if being meticulous means taking another hour to do a job, thats the only time i take situational awareness into account (how busy are we, is it worth the extra time, etc.) and say ok i "could" do it but its not worth it.

Great content brody. Another tip is to put the adapter for the pilot tubing in the gas valve/pilot assembly by hand first, back it up a turn, THEN put the tubing in. Much easier as well. 7:13 , 8:22

You learned the operation of the thermocouple show to test, but you need a course in how to use hand tools. You don’t use a pair of channel lock pliers on a thermocouple nut.

Copl video. Mine always goes out (about every 2 years) but both times i jist dis assemble the thermocoupler, sand it a bit ans air hose it and seems to fix. Pretty cool being able to test the dc volts on it like how you show

Yep. I never dick around with checking a t couple, $13 a piece, just change em out.

if its bad now, it will go bad again right!

You're right. Just replace that thermocouple instead of cleaning it. Sometimes a gas valve is stuck and if you tap, tap, tap on it, it will work but best bet is to replace those faulty parts. The parts may be going, going, but not yet GONE. Who wants a call back in 1-2 weeks for the same problem. Makes it look like the serviceman doesn't know what he is doing!...... If customer thinks the parts will somehow "heal" itself and get better over time, tell them it is not like a person getting a cut on their arm and over time heals on its own. The part is "aging out" or "aged out" Most customers can relate to those medical type terms!

@@lowandslow3939 Hey slow down my friend, Just having fun here, I don't work on boilers I do heat recovery VRF and you need to be on point with planning and workmanship. We don't know the kids circumstances, how many jobs he has or what they are billing the CX. There are a lot of people that can't pay A-level service the cx drives the repair in what they can afford and we all do a little extra because we all care.

I almost had to change out a thermopile earlier today... but it had a strong reading so we're leaving it for now... if there is still an issue we're coming back to it... had a mid efficiency furnace with only 2 of 3 burners lighting... smart valve, so no flamerod to tell it no. it was just clogged with soot. The magic of geometry and I got the burners out, cleaned up, and back in and fired right up.. Geometry to the rescue.

Hell yea 👊🏻 in the winter i always carry thermocouples on me where ever i go because i change them so frequently, saves me a lot of time going back and forth from the truck

As for how it works, as one side of the thermocouple metal warms up, wouldn't the opposite side soon warm up due to conduction and therefore reduce the current needed to induce the solenoid? Thanks

I'd have to look up the details, but it is the dissimilar metals that cause the electron flow. They use different combos for different specifications. Heating the junction causes more electron flow, that is seen as millivolts but it is the current flow that keep the solenoid pulled in.
