Fix your sagging rear suspension/leaf springs easy and gain 4" of rear lift with the Zuk mod. Basically you just take some springs or coils from a donor vehicle or buy new ones, and put them in between the bump stop and the frame. This mod fixes the sagging rear leaf spring issue that all these 1st gen Toyota 4runners (1984 - 1989) have without having to buy new leaf springs or swap to chevy 63's or Trail-Gear/Marlin springs/etc. We were able to gain over 4" of lift for only $50! We used the Moog 81043.
This will work on other trucks as well, but most commonly seen on 4runners. I've seen it done on T100s and Land Cruisers.
Obviously not the best solution but definitely something that works while you're waiting to swap new leaf springs on it.

I want to point out that this isn't an end all be all solution to lifting a 1st gen 4runner. Of course! This is just a cheap and easy mod that anyone can do without a welder, without special tools, and without previous experience. The best solution is new leaf springs (or link it), but not everyone has the funds *or* the expertise to swap/mount new springs under a truck. For my friends 4runner in this video, this was a good solution as it's his daily driver and he just wanted it leveled out. 👍

Mine has been riding great for 2 years now. Key is to accompany it with functional shocks, even just oem KYB shocks.

I would have been tempted to include spring isolators to reduce any noise from the spring contact.

Haha nope! I have enough projects. On mine I’ll be doing Chevy 63s or sky’s rears.

Had a buddy do this to a pickup in highschool damn thing bounced for a mile after hitting a bump, great for overloading the shit out of it but horrid for any kind of regualar on road use!

Hahaha. I think it depends on what shock you run with it but that’s hilarious man

Any update on the longevity of the zuk mod? Debating doing it vs. adding a few more [leafs] to my leaf springs, wondering how it passes the test of time.

i mean, the ride quality of that cant be good at all, but it is an interesting idea none the less

Can't say I don't agree! I just installed it. Not my truck so not sure how it rides afterwards but worn out leaf springs are still going to be old and worn out after the zuk mod. You can get better shocks to assist but definitely the best solution is new leaf springs or an upgrade/spring swap. This is just a quick and easy way to fix the rear sag.

I will say it has to be better than slamming the bump stops on everything. There was about 2" between the bump stop and landing pad before I put these in.

@RM Garage no doubt. In still trying to figure out how to get my truck off the bump stops and stop killing oil pans

@@jhalkoski not sure what you’re driving or what your goals are, but on my pickup (also on the channel) I SASd it and did 4” TG leafs on the rear for 4” of lift front and rear. Takes a bit of articulation to hit the bump stops. The oil pan would be basically impossible to smash.

Think it has to do with the guy who came up with the idea on the forumboards, named zuk.
