Thank you so much. You just saved me $300 or $400. Perfect troubleshooting, I was able to fix the wiper, as it was a rusty shaft. Keep up your videos. Dave
@dominicdibrito248
@dominicdibrito248 2 года назад
This video is right on the mark. The shaft gets rusty, especially if you never use the wiper. I have a few tricks that he didn't share, that helped me in my repair. First, once you get the shaft out, if you don't have a wire wheel grinder, you can put the shaft into the chuck of your drill and spin the shaft against some sandpaper, with a little oil. Just be careful not to set the chuck against the threads. That will clean it nicely and keep it round. Second, when you put the shaft back in, and are aligning the gears, note that the two gears (one on the shaft and the little half moon shaped gear), that mesh together are both marked with some little dots. Those define the range that the gears travel back and forth. You can eyeball the midpoint between the two, and set the gears permanently. The dots touch when the gear combo reaches full travel at each end of the back-and-forth stroke and the wiper reverses travel. This is the singular position that makes everything work right. All of the pieces that go over the gears to link them to the motor and lock them together only go on one way, so you can't get it wrong if you get those dots lined up. Finally, change the o-ring behind the little plastic ring in the housing that the shaft goes through. This is a standard size that you can get at the hardware store for a buck or less. That might help keep the water out.

Great post man...thanks for sharing. Your bright lines cross bar video was helpful too. I ended up not having to pull the motor. I removed the wiper arm/rubber boot and took a small brass file brush to the shaft which was heavily corroded. Sprayed some Jig-A-Loo multiple times and allowed it to penetrate the shaft seal. Then I attached a small pair of vice grips to the shaft and turned on the motor...applying a light amount of pressure on the vice grips I was able to get the shaft turning...keeping the pressure on until the shaft spun freely. Works like new now!! Thanks again!

2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee here. I followed this to the letter and it only took me less than an hour to replace the motor from its housing and put in the new one! (I have the old one if anyone wants it ;)) The only thing I'd suggest about this video is that I'd let viewers know that WD40 is your big time friend here. Use it every step of the way, from loosening every rusted screw to when you reinstall the new motor. I made sure to lubricate everything as I went along and it helped, as Jeeps rust FAST in some spots and on a lot of parts. Thanks again from a thankful viewer!!!

One more happy viewer here. When I took it apart, things were misaligned in the gearbox, so it was jammed up. I still cleaned the shaft since it wasn't exactly turning smoothly, and reassembled and all is well. Thanks.

Thanks for this video. Very helpful, just did the repair today on 2012 Jeep G. Ch.. I painted wiper shaft (the part above O-ring) with cold galvanizing paint after rust removal, I hope it will not rust again. Not all Made in Japan parts/assemblies are made perfect. This assembly should have double O-ring around main wiper shaft or other more robust seal, and shaft housing should be filled complete with grease, also the wiper shaft that comes above the O-ring should have better corrosion protection or made out of stainless steel. The mode of failure for this assembly is the rust from main shaft exposed to elements that is flowing down inside of main shaft housing.

My biggest concern was safely removing the motor from the window. The instructions were exactly what I needed for my 2012 Grand Cherokee. Motor is now on my bench ready for repair. Thanks very much. (I strongly recommend using a gear puller to remove the wiper arm. 3" (75mm) worked well for me.)

@92bear 450!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 LMFAO you one of them. You lucky we never crossed paths. I'm the type that can sell tacos to the taco truck. Back in my Big-O tire days, I'd pistol whip you with my mouth piece $450 - $500 just for a simple brake job and that's just for labor . A simple $3.00 car part (we'd get a phat discount) would end up costing you $100 add that shit up and you'd be the reason why Christmas time came with a phat bonus. Moral of the story is simple, you sound like a little bitch 😭 the dealer blah blah blah. A bitch is only good for one thing make my pockets fatter. Don't be the bitch don't be scurd 😱 if you fuck up no sweat. You can easily get it at Pick N Pull and just sneak it out.

This was my issue too. Thank you for posting. I might add that it's a good idea to clean out the inside of the housing where the shaft spins inside as it too gets rusty just as the shaft itself does and lubricate. Also a good idea to replace that O ring.

Thank you very much for the video!! Some remarks: if the trunk door is open, the motor is powered, but if just the glass window is opened, there is no tension on the connector (test from the min. 2). Regarding the washer on top of the plastic handle and the handle itself, I could remove them only using a sharp screwdriver. Pay attention that under the handle there is a rubber seal that is fixed on the window. Removal of these two parts were tricky not to break the window or damage the rubber seal.

Totally awesome TY so much! Had exactly the same issue. Could see it wanted to turn and couldn’t. Just removed the outside parts, cleaned away the corrosion, added plenty of WD40 and it is good as new. 10 minute fix that I wouldn’t have had the confidence to do otherwise. Would have cost me a wiper motor plus labour at the garage for sure!

Thanks for your information. There is more to the story however. My 2013 grand cherokee had a bad motor which I replaced with one from NAPA Auto Parts. But it would not run so after contacting a mechanic I know he told me that the power to the fuse under the hood did not receive power until the jeep is started and the wiper is turned on. Even then there was no power to the wiper motor so I took the jeep to my regular service tech and had him to clear all errors on all the computers in the vehicle. The wiper motor started working immediately after the errors were reset. Hope this information helps someone.

@@wk2outdoors321 Same thing happened to me today. What can trip you up is the alignment of the wiper shaft as there are v pins you can see right above the gear on the shaft that lock it into the housing. After putting the shaft back in the housing, rotate 100% counterclockwise and position the armature with the teeth so that it's only connecting with the first couple of teeth on the left. As the white plastic gear pulls the armature down, it'll pull the gear on the wiper shaft clockwise. Very helpful video otherwise, saved me 400 bucks that the shop wanted or at least $100 for me to do it myself. Thanks!

Aug '20, dealer told me some time ago wiper motor bad. Bought motor from salvage, plugged in & still not working. Tested voltage from engine to 1st clip at hardtop - getting nearly 5 volts. Checked same on neighbors jeep - same voltage, check. Watched your video on supplying direct electricity to motor and have question. Both old & new motors I connect direct electricity to clip on wiper mount. Neither motor worked. I didn't connect directly to motor as you did so shaft may be seized on both I guess. Did I observe correctly that when you validated motor worked that you used only positive off battery and didn't involve black or negative?

@JohnnyChicago

If you can rebuild motors as small as that, grease and lubricate everything, clean off the shaft, and it might work again once you put it back together, and the best thing to do is just clip on the electricity, put the fuse back in and then see if it turns on, if it doesn't then your motor is probably screwed. These motors go between $90 and $130 brand new. If you need to buy a new one, so be it, I did and it worked perfectly! Take your time and you'll see the results.

Quick permanent fix...remove rear wiper arm and throw away. Under left front of Jeep disconnect the washer bottle pump for the back glass (there is one pump for the rear window and one for the windshield). Apply "Rain X" so water beads on back glass...no more hassle. It's a great idea to use Rain X on all glass of every vehicle...windshield, mirrors, side windows, back glass. Just have to reapply as needed. It lasts a long time. I used it on my over the road semi for 30 years. IMPORTANT:...make sure glass is CLEAN, squirt Rain X onto a DAMP paper towel,and apply like you would wax, let it dry to a HAZE, then buff the haze off with CLEAN DRY paper towel. And...do not apply it to or let it touch the wiper blade rubber when applying...it will "glue" the blades to the glass.
