I use citric acid rather than vinegar, it does just as good a job on the brass and steel and is easier to store as it comes as a powder. I don't use naval jelly at all, I can mix a gallon or 2 with water to make a citric acid bath and soak it all. It will darken the steel but breaks up all the loose rust just like naval jelly will, a scrub with a brash brush and a polish with emery cloth will bring back the brightness of the frame.

If I need to get crud out of the fount I fill fount 1/4 way full with denatured alcohol add a pack of BBs then heat fount with very warm water and swish all around for about 1/2 hour.This really cleans up the fount.Richard Wolfenden used Permatex Aviation form-a-gasket on the valve assembly threads.
I’ve been meaning to ask you if mineral spirits will work for parts cleaning. I use that for other parts. Dirt, rust and grime just dissolve with no effort.
Have you discovered the magic of soda blasting for the unpainted or plated metal parts? It eliminates a lot of solvents, cleaners, and wire brush work.
Art I don't think so, but I have never tried. I'm not sure if it would seal sufficiently to not have a small leak, and that is something you absolutely do not want.
Have you ever tried Evaporust on rust? My other hobbies are old Lionel trains and cast iron. Evaporust works better on the tracks and cast iron for rust and you can leave it for days with no pitting. The other thing I use is an electrolysis tank. But only on steel.
I have, and I use the electrolysis frequently for steel frames and burners. I'm about to do a video on a 500 stove and will probably use the electrolysis there.
Charlie, no they cannot be found at hardware stores. I took originals and had them sized by the company that sells them to Old Coleman Parts, so I know they are correct. They fit like a glove!
If the painting on the fount and top are chipped, especially around the fill and pump holes. Would it be advisable to strip and repaint, or leave them to keep the character of the lantern?
Gary character is a good thing, in my eyes. Some folks pay big bucks for pristine lanterns and that is fine but I am very comfortable with a little paint loss here and there. Remember that the ventilator is not painted, and it cannot be painted.
Warm soap and water on the porcelain enamel. I've used goo gone to get spots off, along with my finger nail. Don't ever use an abrasive on a vent or you will scratch and/or dull it badly.
We have a Coleman 220h one of the burner screens is missing. Our burner cap is frozen on the stem and we can’t get it off. We have penetrating oil on it over night, it’s no better and it’s still sitting. Would be able to give some advice on how to remove this cap? Thank you
