The Coleman 220F Lantern Restoration

It's cooling off outside, so you know what that means. It's time to start getting back into the nest and get another restoration going. This episode we are going to tackle the Coleman 220F lantern restoration for a friend and subscriber. Justin approached me with this old lantern that belonged to his grandfather from the early 1970's and said the last time he tried using it, it would only spit out raw fuel and not light. Not exactly the best thing for a liquid fuel lantern to do, right? I have hardly ever used one of these gas lanterns, let alone took one apart or repaired one. But after thinking a little while on it, and him giving an awesome story that goes with the lantern's history, I decided we would give it a go and try to get this old trusty lantern back into good order for many more years of service. Yeah, I know, I'm always a sucker for an old item with a good story. So grab you a cool drink, sit back and relax after a hard days work, and let's get this old lantern ready to go back out and light our paths in the world. Hope you all enjoy, Hope you remember to subscribe, like, and share, and I truly hope you all have a great day. Stephen

Oh absolutely. That’s what has given me a little more courage on some of these projects. When I was little I took apart all of my transformers (probably at least 5 or 6) all at once, and couldn’t remember what went where. Mom threw them out saying I’d never figure out how to put them back together. Wish I could have kept them, because I would have eventually figured it out. A truly uplifting story at the end. And a good preservation of a family heirloom! My procedures for bringing antiques back into service is very similar, except that after the vinegar soak, I give all those parts a good wash with a baking soda solution before the final rinse. That completely neutralizes any remaining acid. Thank you for the video!

One way that works 90% of the time when dealing with screws is to put a small Vice Grip on the head of the screw perpendicular to the shaft of the screw. Give it a slight partial rotation of maybe 45 degrees. Remove vice grip and use a driver. You can also do this with good plyers.

i have a trick for you. that set screw at the valve and air intake tube. once you got it apart the way you were able to. , take propane torch and heat the threads on the inside of the air intake tube and use a pair of needle nose vice grips on the head of the set screw and it will come out . just be easy with it. i have had that problem as well. also another little secret i will tell ya. if you can go buy you some (C R C COPPER ANTI-SEIZE ITS 1800 DEGREES) WHEN I TAKE APART THE BURNER ASSEMBLY i add some to all the threads on the parts and also at the bottom of the air intake tube where it screws into the valve assembly and also on the threads of the set screw that holds air intake tube to the valve assembly. also u use it on the threads at the top of the lantern where the ball nut goes to hold the vent on at the top. this stuff may smoke a little as it gets hot from running the lantern, but that is ok. it will NOT hurt anything or the lantern preformance. but it WILL make it easier to take apart in order to clean it later on. ( DO NOT PUT THE ANTI-SEIZE ON ANYTHING ELSE !!!!!!!) ( DO NOT PUT THIS STUFF ON THE VALVE ASSEMBLY THREADS AT ALL AND NEVER PUT IT ON THE GENERATOR JAM NUT THAT HOLDS GENERATOR TO THE VALVE ASSEMBLY !!!) (PUT ONLY ON THE AIR TUBE AND UPPER PARTS) i also use this stuff on the stoves as well ( ONLY USE THIS STUFF WHERE THE GENERATOR SCREWS INTO THE VALVE, AND THE OTHER END WHERE THE TIP SCREWS ONTO THE GENERATOR TUBE AND VERY LITTLE WHERE THE NEEDLE ROD SCREWS INTO THE VALVE INSIDE THE GENERATOR). this stuff is a life saver on getting these lanterns and stoves apart later on. Honestly I have no idea…lol. Maybe you could find an owners manual that would be able to help, or one of the fine people here may be better equipped to answer that. For myself, I don’t even have a source around here for above 93 octane gasoline. And I would think that the ethanol in most modern gasoline may cause problems with the lantern in the long run. Also, it would probably depend on if it was a dual fuel model or not. It’s a very good question, but one I honestly can’t answer. Sorry I couldn’t be more help

Could I ship you one to restore? It’s my wife’s grandfathers. She just inherited it.

I appreciate the offer, but unfortunately I’m so back logged with other restorations I just don’t have the time. But I bet you could probably do it easier than what you think. And I’d definitely be willing to offer you advice if you get stuck. If you decide to, email me and I’ll help you all I can
