It’s because of your videos and website I have been able to rebuild a couple Coleman 200 lanterns. These are the best videos - thanks so much for making them!
Id like to thank you for your very informative video series to refurbish my US 1944 single mantle Coleman lantern. You are orderly and clear in your explanations . I appreciate that. I will , no doubt, use your other video series when I work on my other gas lantern lamps.
Hi Frank! Really appreciate you taking the time to put this series together for us all! Such great information and instruction! Really like the vise stand! Going to make one of those soon! I only have 2 lanterns and a few stoves but I really enjoy and appreciate the old coleman iron! Thanks again for a great series and for also providing information on other available resources out there! Cheers!
Hello Frank, Been bing watching your videos lately. good stuff. Now I'm wondering about my lantern. Are the newer lanterns like the 285 or 295 rebuildable like the old ones?
Frank.....@ 4:45 you are demonstrating removing the 5/8" nut from the burner tube. You say that the nut should stay fixed relative to the tube. For me, the nut is moving a bit, but the tube does not move with it. The burner tube is frozen to the "U" tube. I've tried penetrating oil but I can't get to to release. The nut turns a couple revolutions and then locks up at a certain point when unscrewing. The nut is pretty soft, and because of the odd angle, I'm starting to strip the corners off it. Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks for all your good work. UPDATE....USED A DEEP-WELL SOCKET. ALL GOOD
Hi, I have a Coleman 286, it doesn't burn properly and kerosene leaks from the top of the generator. Bought it new, even changed the generator. I can't figure this out. Can you direct me?
Frank these videos were the most informative and interesting I have seen. Excellent job and thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I learned a lot.
Before taking the valve assembly off, take a grease pencil and mark the bottom of the fount in line with the valve wheel. When putting the valve assembly back in, it will line up perfectly
I have a 457g Coleman handy gas plant. Do you have a repair video or information on how to repair one of these? Thanks. And also thanks for the best Colman videos on RU-vid
Hi Frank. Thanks for this series. Have a 639B that I am planning to restore and this series had given me the impetus to embark on this project. Thanks again
Something else worth noting on the check valve conversation- if the check valve leaks, the pump won't be able to build full pressure. I just had a lantern with quite a bad check valve. I thought it may have other issues because it was burning with a very weak flame. However, after cleaning the check valve, I was able to properly pressurize the fount, and found that the lantern burns just fine when pressurized fully.
Thank You once again....being a newbie I find that I have some much to learn. And You have a wonderful way of relaying the information in a "Good Way" ...Blessings to You and Yours !!!
Do the newer models. Specifically 639 kerosene model have a tip cleaner? I don't see one but I don't own one. Why wouldn't it and is there a comparable vintage kerosene model a handy man such as myself could buy on ebay and rebuild? Not a collector just want a kerosene pressure lamp for camping and emergency. Thank you.
Hello, new subscriber here…..excellent videos with DETAILS, I really appreciate that. Going to restore my 1936 242A this winter. Someone unfortunately replaced the old pump with a newer one and I’ve got to run one down.
Fantastic detail without too much, thankyou for your efforts, I just love to find old ones and put them back together. I have a 200A from the 60's on my bench now so this is spot on. Check valve check, awesme : )
Couple questions regarding the pump: 1) My Coleman 139 pump is held in with two screws. After taking out the screws do I have to unscrew the knurled shoulder of the pump from the font, or does it just pull straight out like you show in your video? 2) Regarding the leather pump cap - what type of oil should it be soaked in?
Figured out these questions: 1) No, the knurled shoulder of the pump does not screw in. It pulls straight out after removing the two screws. 2) Neatsfoot oil.
Great video to aid me in tearing down and cleaning my old Model 200....until I got the valve body out of the fount. My pickup tube does not have a 5/16" nut holding it to the valve. I looked at it closely under magnification, I think it has a neck with threads above it but several attempts to grip and loosen the tube with pliers have prompted me to go another route. I suspended the tube in warm vinegar in a glass and will brush it several times as it soaks. Perhaps some carb cleaner at the tip to clean that up. The tank is getting a full bath too to remove any rust or sediment and to fill the air tube to clean the back side of the check valve, which is currently not operating optimally. I don't have the tool to remove the valve yet. The only one I can find online is $140...a bit steep. $30 or $40 I would jump on in a heartbeat. No idea yet if the lantern was a US or Canadian made model, no date markings visible yet but there is a sticker on the bottom of the tank to be removed next. Thanks for your great videos, they are very educational.
Thank you, I have a 222A giving me trouble (wont light and leaks from adjuster valve) and the generator isnt made anymore. I have to attempt to repair it myself. Feeling more confidant after watching this.
Frank, you are looking great. I love the 242, and used to call myself 242 burner over on the site. When I first hit your bulleting board, there was only about 100 of us tops. I think I met you at the show in Tulsa OK. My name is Jim C. out of Saint Peter's, MO.
It was worth it to me, since I have multiple Coleman fuel stoves and lanterns, to buy the handmade check valve removal tool from eBay. I got the double ended one that fits both large and small check valves.
Great video! My 200a recently started working good initially but within a couple minutes it gets really loud and dim. Any idea what parts I need to target?
See the time stamp listed in the video description: 10:13 - Remove Valve assembly from Coleman Single Mantle Lantern Fount. If you can get the assembly down into a vise it might be a bit hard to turn but it can be done even with Lock-Tite. If not you will need to try some heat.
Can you do a short video on how to repack the tip cleaner. I have purchased the graphite packing but only used it on an Akron 103 valve stem with limited success. I have only had one bad on Coleman lanterns having rebuild over 25 of them.
usually you would just replace the tip cleaner assembly. it comes with the packing. I've repacked a couple 220E/F tip cleaners, but it's a pretty annoying process.
I've got two older lanterns and couldn't figure out how to get the leather cups off the pump stem. I didn't realize that you could reverse the cup, or that the older retainers are threaded on. I also learned a bunch of things the easy way, rather than the way I usually learn them. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!
We have a Coleman 220h one of the burner screens is missing. Our burner cap is frozen on the stem and we can’t get it off. We have penetrating oil on it over night, it’s no better and it’s still sitting. Would be able to give some advice on how to remove this cap? Thank you
Went to your website. Great info. I will send pictures of my collection but none are redone yet. That is why these videos are so valuable. I have 2 - 428, 1-414, 1-424, a 425, a 502-700 stove and 502-952 heat drum both in original boxes. 2 ovens and 2 sets of shelves for stoves. Also two reflectors for lamps and a lantern vault. I keep the vault off the font per horror stories on rust.
Hi Frank I was having trouble with my 200a flaming as I lit it, never had this before. Anyway I replaced the generator tube, still no good. I had striped it all down but could not undo the burner tube, blew down and it was clear. Well I was looking at it after the rebuild and still flaring and looking up into the small hole where the generator tube fits into I could see something. It turned out to be a wasp. Managed to undo the burner tube and cleaned it out. Re lit it and Woosh there she lit, running fine now. Thanks.
Frank i have a Q: i have a 242C green fount. the tip cleaner lever only sweeps from 7:00oclock position to 11:00 oclock position. all my other 242's(nickle) spin 360degrees. this lantern goes from full bright to super dim adustablity beutifully and runs great. the lever does not turn roughly or anything and positivly stops rotation at 7 (wide open) thru 11 (full close). was this a normal feature on the painted 242's???
No sir, that tip cleaner should spin 360. You have a bind between the tip cleaner stem and the eccentric block. I'm looking for a new tip cleaner stem in the shop so I can make a quick "how to" video on replacing one...
I tore down my 200a last night. I was quite disappointed to find rust and peeling coating inside the fount. The pump tube is also all rusty inside. And the check valve came out with an unmodified screwdriver effortlessly. I can't believe the thing worked at all. I'm really disappointed to find all that crap in there because I thought the lantern was in very good condition. I'm not giving up on it though! Ordering parts now to repair it.
It is amazing the crap one can find inside a fount, and inside the pump cylinder. Imagine a lantern with cheap gas in it sitting in a damp shed for 40 years...yuk. It will appreciate the attention you give it!!!
I have searched the internet over the years always wanting to learn more about coleman lanterns and stoves. And Im always wanting to learn more about trouble shooting and fixing. Ive learned more in one night on youre channel than all the others in the last 5 years. Thank You.
Travis, I don't rebuild customer lanterns anymore; if you email me at info@oldtowncoleman.com I can see if we have some local help for you, or, you can send it into Coleman for repair.
Bruce that is a great idea--thank you. I need to do a couple of stove videos next but I have an old 252A in the shop that needs some attention...shooting for January.
@@OldTownColeman Thanks for the videos, they are very helpful! I bought a 1945 Coleman gas lantern on ebay because I wanted a cool gas lantern in the summer instead of an LED one, but unfortunately I have no clue about gas lamps yet. Is the 1945 standard army model the the same model as the 252A? I can only read "U.S., Coleman 1945", no other model type. The mantle is missing and the "ignition stone" is worn out. I don't know if the lantern works. Do you know where I can buy parts, and check if it works? I'm a total newbie, I just know it burns gas.. somehow :-D
