This always helps me on any Windows version when the damn icon cache gets randomly corrupted, due to updates, restoration points, etc and it always leaves it in perfect condition, also my taskbar icons stop refreshing due to that. Perfect video, so well explained. Got all my icons back again, very nice.

I just ran into this problem on my mothers laptop. Tried everything here with no avail. Restarting was not getting the files to rebuild. HOWEVER. To fix my problem I copied the files over from another laptop. And the second I copied the IconCache.db file under the Local Folder it instantly fixed it. So it was a corrupt IconCache.db file. All is well now. In case this can help someone that these 2 step aren't fixing it. Appreciate the video it sure steered me in the right direction!

I liked how easy your method was to do, however, it didn't correct my problem. I tried method #1 but my Word doc still had what looks like the Notepad icons on them. The docx files all have the correct icon. I have tried lots of "fixes" but none have corrected my problem. Any thoughts?

Quick way to get to your app data. On your keyboard press [Windows Key]+R Next type in: %localappdata% (with the %) and press [Enter]. Voala, you're in the folder with iconcache.

Hey , When i turn ON my lap, the taskbar icons are shown on the right side of the taskbar by overlaped onto the time, battery, network settings.. and sometimes i ignore that.. But that right part of taskbar suddenly disappear without nothing.. only the icons remains there... Do you know the problem of this... Is it because of the updates ?

Help! The only icons that are not working are my photo icons. I have tried changing photos to open with Windows Media, Firefox, Word, Explorer, etc. to no avail. The icons showing are blue mountains but have a big gray ""X" in the lower left hand corner. When I click on them. nothing happens. Can you help, please?

Number 2 worked for me, I wanted to get rid of the text from my icons and while that worked, for some reason hooking up my laptop to my hdmi to my tv it blanked all my apps, but everything launches fine. I wanted it to look simple. Guess I can't have that, is there a way I can have no text on my icons without using the alt+255 method ?

I tried this and it worked but not for what I wanted, I had a blank icon on the task bar and this didn't solved it for me. If you have the same issue with an app icon being blank on your taskbar just pin it and unpin it and it should refresh (I did this after clearing the icon db file like showed in the video so maybe it also contributed)

Have you tried to restart your computer, sometimes that will rebuild it out. If not, let me know.
