One thing I would suggest is if recording a shot you're going to import 3d models into, manually fix your focus on something that's about the right distance away. Naturally autofocus doesn't work very well on imaginary objects. I'd be interested to see if anyone else has some suggestions on this particular topic.

Great tips for beginners! I would only add that capturing in 4K and down-res-ing to 1080p in post is also a great option. You'll still get better quality images and also have the ability to punch in to your image in post if you want to :) Cudos HitFilm!

4k footage downscaled to FullHD gets you supersharp image. Shooting 4k enables lot of things like cropping in post without a loss of visible pixels etc... so 4 is way to go ;)
@JoshuaDaviesCEO
@JoshuaDaviesCEO 8 лет назад
+MiikaWasHere All good points but it also takes time to process (if you're downscaling everything) uses up more drive space and makes for slower editing on most computers. If you're starting out then I would still argue that 4K is overkill and HD is great. We have 4K equipment ourselves but mainly shoot HD. :) Having said that, everyone loves to play with 6K footage off a RED from time-to-time.
@indieingenuity7160
@indieingenuity7160 8 лет назад
+MiikaWasHere I have to chime in here as well. Shooting in 4k and scaling down to 1080p gives you 4:2:2 color space. Natively almost all DSLR's shoot 4:2:0. The kiss of death for keying an compositing work. Also, you'll have a much better grade with the additional color space. 4K is coming on fast and everything at CES this year is 4K. By the end of 2016, almost all online services will be streaming 4k.
@FXhome
@FXhome 8 лет назад
+Indie Ingenuity ultimately it depends on the destination of your project. In the professional space, 4K is increasingly the standard, but on the consumer end 1080p is still the baseline. Even with services streaming 4K, it's still a relatively small portion of the audience who can actually enjoy that res. Of course, if you have the technical ability to do 4K then absolutely go for it. But for those just starting out, we feel it's extra time and effort which would be better spent on some of the fundamentals.
@JoshuaDaviesCEO
@JoshuaDaviesCEO 8 лет назад
+Indie Ingenuity 4K is awesome for sure - cameras and broadcast are increasing moving that way (although broadcast moves very slowly) and at shows like NAB the discussion is beginning to move to 8K... You're totally right that more UV data can help chroma key work, but results with 4:2:0 can still be very good. Our point is that when editing on consumer/pro-sumer hardware, where you want a fast high-quality workflow without complication, 1080P still has a lot of life in it - the benefits of moving from 1080P to 4K are lower than from SD to HD and that adoption took a long time. 4K is still very rare on RU-vid despite it being an option for ages (even the big movie studios and music channels don't upload in 4K despite having the content in that resolution) and most of the dedicated RU-vid creators are still using an HD workflow with brilliant results. No doubt 4K will become as ubiquitous as 1080P in the next couple of years... but for now we would recommend that 1080P is the place to start. :)

I have to add my vote for 4K *sometimes*. I agree that for the most part 1080P is the answer. There's a well known "hiccup" that occurs every 4Gbyte barrier of a few frames, which isn't a big deal visually but you lose the sound (a good reason to *always* use external recorder). At 4K you will get this hiccup far more often (downside). BUT, if you can utilize cropping, then 4K is the way. Imagine a video of a speaker with a fixed camera, for example. You can track that person's body and have a crop that seems like you are following them. For acting bits, you can cut or zoom to a close-up of the face and still end up with HD, impossible if the source is HD. If you are planning to use the full frame of what you are capturing, then by all means shoot in HD. But if there is a reasonable possibility that you will need to crop, zoom or stabilize, then use 4K. P.S. I never experimented with the difference of keying or compositing in HD vs 4K scaled down. It might also be a reason to shoot in 4K if you are.

why not 4k? because you can scale it down to 1080p and it will look better, and you could zoom in in post without the resolution going down!.
@VariTimo
@VariTimo 8 лет назад
I wouldn't go so fast over a resolution. If you can shoot 4K without any big trouble it still looks better ( if your cameras good enough) in 1080 and you can still use it to zoom in for reframing.

Please differ between the container(.mp4) and the video codec as you can still use poor codecs or good codecs with a wrong setup in your container.

Oh dear... There is going to be some 4K hate from that last comment haha. It has its place, true. But if you are watching this video and didn't know about the 180° rule or native ISOs, than you should probably stay at 1080 until you get to grips on the many core concepts at play here.
@FXhome

My content is recorded via OBS from Minecraft's runtime envirionment. What advice do you have regarding best practices, capture codec settings, and animated content recording in general?
@FXhome
@FXhome 8 лет назад
+Arch Lich H264 video should work fine in HitFilm. If you find you're having audio sync issues, try switching to a fixed framerate rather than a variable framerate (if OBS has that as an option).

Can you please show on how to make flying effects not using green screen please that would really help
@FXhome
@FXhome 8 лет назад
+A-Man B There's a few options: 1. Cast an actual superhero in your movie. 2. Film your actor from a low angle pointing up at the sky, with them either standing or lying down on a raised table. (some of the freefall stuff in JJ Abrams' Star Trek movie was shot this way - very simple trick) 3. Use a wire rig and harness to actually lift the actor into the sky (you'll probably need to remove the wires in post). IMPORTANT: using wire rigs is dangerous, only do it if you have an experienced stunt crew.

Good morning everybody, I am sorry for my English but I will try to explain. I got a question about sound and image who are not synchrone with each other, for better information, the example screen videoframes are just slower than the sound. Sow the sound is perfect but the video is not correct. When I try to play it Windows Media Player then both works perfect. But when I import and render it in HitFilm then it is not synchronated. Could you please tell me what I have to do and how it all works better? Camera from samsung galaxy note 4: 1080 p How you transfer from phone: via usb cable to external hard disk Editprogram I use on Phone: Kinemaster (app for android, best app I found for tablets and smartphones:P) Editprogram I use on PC: ofcours HitFilm 3 Express!!! Just one other question: I hurt and I test that in HitFilm the soundeditor is not as good as it has to be, Does HitFilm is going to be better also for sound?
@FXhome
@FXhome 8 лет назад
+BassieVlug the first thing to check is the framerate, to make sure the video is being detected correctly in HitFilm. Its framerate should be listed in the media panel, and you can edit his in the clip's properties. It's also worth checking what codec the Galaxy and Kinemaster use to encode video, and whether they use variable framerates at all, as these can cause audio sync issues (HitFilm expects constant framerate).
