Hi everyone! So recently I've been going down a rabbit hole of learning how to actually recycle my empty makeup & beauty products. I'm getting ready to mail in some of my empties so I thought I'd share where I'm sending them and how exactly I'm cleaning the packaging out so that it's ready to be recycled. I'd love to hear about your favorite drop-off or mail-in beauty recycling programs in the comments!

Fantastic video- imagine if videos like this became more common/mainstream! So many beauty items could be recycled and more consideration taken into purchasing plastics! I will say there’s a sense of satisfaction in reusing emptied packaging for other uses too!

Looking at that pixi setting mist it makes me think how it would be so amazing if companies would sell some biodegradable refills to pour into the spray bottle when you finish it! I feel like I go through setting spray SO quickly and it makes me sad to think of how many extra plastic bottles that creates 😓

I really love saving jars/plastic containers because you can store so much stuff in them. I have like 3 empty plastic ice cream containers that is a really nice sturdy plastic and I store my makeup and other stuff in them. A tip too is that if you want to do something like that but hate the color of the container or the logo then you can always just paint them with whatever color you want. Like if your room is a blue aesthetic for example and the container you wanna use is orange, just paint it with a few coats of blue acrylic paint or use like sharpie markers or something and boom.

Great video, Sarah! I like how you spoke about reusing some empty packaging for decanting or depotting. I’ve started doing this for smaller jars, so I can scrape out tube products (like moisturiser) and still keep what’s left of the product in an airtight/clean way. It’s handy to have a small jar or two on hand!

I appreciate hearing about all these programs, as the area I live in has close to zero recycling. You can recycle cardboard here, and I think that’s it. The Target in my area has bins for general recycling and they are always overflowing with everyone bringing all their plastic, glass, etc. I hate throwing things away, as the area I grew up in had lots of recycling bins placed everywhere.

SO good that you posted this video! I feel it's so sad the amount of used/unused makeup that goes to landfill. I feel like that most people simply don't care to be honest, just because it requires that little bit of extra effort. I've signed up to Terracycle here in Australia, and you need to accumulate 2kg of used items before you can send it in, which will take me a while, but I'm just glad there's a program out here too.

Hey, Sarah! Please tell me what do you think about the Sephora Recycle Program. On the site they claim that in France they managed to recycle tons of beauty products. BUT, I find it hard to believe that the perfume empty or the makeup empty that you take back to Sephora doesn’t end in the landfill. I think what I want to say is that I’m afraid that this noble program is only a smart marketing move, you know? Hope I made myself clear. English is not my first language. Also, TerraCycle cand be found in the EU in Paris. Like that’s all. If anyone from the EU knows other locations, please share! 💚 I admire you sooo much, Sarah! 🤗

I try to recycle what I can in my area. I feel a certain amount of guilt about using a lot of water to clean something out so it can be recycled though. A quick rinse is one thing, but I think I'd rather toss a mascara tube than to have to rinse all the gunk out. Is that weird? I have a bunch of little jars that I've saved an reused, but I also hang on to caps. They especially come in handy for bottles that come with pumps. I switch out the pump for a cap that fits, and I can turn the bottle over so everything that's left comes to the top, and I can squeeze it out.
@SarahRoseBeauty
@SarahRoseBeauty 3 года назад
I know what you mean, but I don’t feel like I used any more water than I would have if I were washing my brushes which I do regularly. I feel like the benefits of recycling outweigh the water use, but I could be wrong!
@emme4129
@emme4129 3 года назад
I feel like that's entirely a regional thing and one person's answer wouldn't be another person's. If you live somewhere with water shortages, you're probably right that double- or triple-washing things isn't worth it. That's a conversation worth having, though; I'm from Missouri and now living in the desert so I find that I forget about water being the number one commodity out here too much!

I reuse some of my empty product cases. A beautiful lipstick that's empty (e.g., YSL) can be cleaned and then used as a pill case. If the plastic case for an eyeshadow quad, blush, or pressed powder is empty, I clean it and can put pills or flat jewelry in it. IMHO, the main difference today between drug store makeup and cosmetics from the department store or Sephora is the packaging. Drugstore makeup has upped its game in product quality.

Thank you so much for posting this! I use so much and can only recycle what my city accepts, which is plastics 1-5 and 7, but my makeup and a lot of skincare don't have numbered labels on their products, so I needed this info. I got my shipping labels for Lilah B and Ilia. Lilah B. doesn't accept empty perfume bottles and I was wondering if you know whether Ilia does? Both use TerraCycle, so I'm really curious. Ilia just says 5 clean empties and I have this one travel-sized empty glass bottle of perfume and plastic pump won't twist off, so I'm wondering if Ilia's recycle program would accept a product like that. I wish more companies would have programs like that; it would be great to return empty packages to same stores where they're purchased. I heard Tenoverten salons do a similar program with nail polish bottles from any brand, and you don't even have to clean them out; they recycle the left over polish, bottle, cap and brush. I wish I had one near me. If you know of a recycling program that accepts nail polish empties, please let us know.

You showed how to clean out the makeup but I was wondering for beauty oil how did you clean those if you did have some you were recycling? I was going to clean mine in the sink but then I had second thoughts about putting oil down my drain lol

hey! is the oil bottle mostly empty? if it's only a small amount oil that should be fine, otherwise I guess I'd dump the oil in the trash first!

@@SarahRoseBeauty I actually have a mostly full bottle because sadly I forgot I had it and it’s expired. So I was concerned about washing it in the sink. 😳

Either recycling is a lot more unregulated in the country that I live in or we are not being educated on it. But generally the rule is to throw it in the recycling bag if there is one. We do have different ways the recycling is structured per City though.

Love those videos from you (and any other video, let's be honest...), but i am so frustrated that none of the programs mentioned are availble in my country...I have a lot of makeup and skincare I've been saving for a whilee but i am started to get frustrated having no solution...

I'm sorry! Like I said though, there's no reason to feel bad if you don't have an option to recycle these things where you live - if you need to throw them away that's not your fault!

Hi Sarah, very helpful video, but it does make me wonder... all that make-up going down the drain, is that not harmful for the environment as well? I’m not sure all those particles such as glitter can be filtered out of the water properly. Just a thought.

There's definitely something to that, but it's not really different than washing off your makeup at the end of the day.. 🤷🏻‍♀️

As far as I know the shimmer eyeliners I cleaned out don't contain any microplastics! But it would have ended up going down the drain whether I used it on my eyes or eventually cleaned it out to be recycled.

@@SarahRoseBeauty Hi, when I looked last time they didn't have any of the partnerships listed that they have now (i.e. Garnier, Nordstrom, etc). They charged a flat fee per box and the cost was fairly high. I see now there are solutions listed that are free, which I'm thrilled about LOL. Thanks again for bringing this issue up, or I would have never known that Terracycle had changed.

I don't like the idea of different brands having their own recycling programs.. why can't I send all of my aerosol cans to the same place, for example.. I don't buy enough from some of those brands to sign up for their programs.. I think I will just go to l'occitane to drop off empties in the future

Yeah definitely makes more sense to drop off all brands of empties at one of the drop off places if you have access to one!

There are actually four Rs with the first being refuse, it is always best to avoid bringing the product into your collection in the first place. While we may enjoy makeup we can do our best by limiting the amount in our collection, this prevents products from going bad before we can use them up and therefore reducing our waste. By refusing products that we dont need or that have bulky packaging we tell companies what we don't want, therefore reducing waste at the highest level.

6:52 my country uses the symbol right to the number. It means the companies paid a licence according to the weight and the material (but at the end it is us, who buy the stuff, who pay for it). As soon as your container is empty it gets thrown into a special recycling bag or bin. The company which offers the licence than collects the trash and recycles it. What isn't easy to separate gets burned. And nowadays we have so little litter they burn a lot more so the waste incineration plant doesn't run out of "fuel". But the consumers are at fault for to much carbon dioxide. Thx politics.

only being able to send 5 items at a time is such a frustrating concept. I guess for the typical consumer, they're probably not going through or saving a ton of used products so 5 seems reasonable, but for those of us that do save & clean, having to do multiple shipments feels wasteful for gas & carbon emissions.
@keelienne
@keelienne 3 года назад
I‘m really sorry, but I can not imagine that it is really environmentally friendly recycling this way. First there is so much drinkable water going down the drain if you are cleaning out the containers yourself, that additionally is spoiled with glitter and chemicals.. Second to stash your products to send out five every month instead of as many as possible at once is wasting a lot of fuel, time, packing material etc, not the best way either! And third it takes them a lot of time to separate these things, I was almost laughing when you put the stopper back into the glasveil.. 😂 Considering all of this, this is really not helping at all. Adding up the natural recourses „burnt“ to recycle these, you would have done better in just throwing them in the trash. In my opinion, you should best have separated the materials from each other in plastic, glass, metal etc and put them in your cities recycling program at your house. The things in the Containers are being cleaned and separated by machines, those are way more effective than and using less resources than we do - comparable to the waterusage of a dishwasher or us, washing by hand an having water running the whole time. I REALLY love and appreciate the effort you make, but I think this time you went down the wrong path. Maybe rethink?
@SarahRoseBeauty
@SarahRoseBeauty 3 года назад
Hi! Appreciate you sharing your thoughts! As far as the water use, I didn’t use any more water than I would when I wash my makeup brushes, which I do monthly - maybe I should just throw out my brushes and buy new ones instead of bothering to wash them too lol. I don’t really see why it’s a problem to use water to clean out items to be recycled, but not for other routine tasks. (Not to mention, many cities waste hundreds of millions of gallons of drinkable water to leakage every year, but no one talks about that.) As for the shimmers and “chemicals” being rinsed down the drain, those would have gone down the drain whether I had used them on my face or eventually cleaned it out to be recycled. As far as I know the eyeliners I cleaned out did not contain any micro plastics. Luckily, I hear there are some recycling programs that don’t require the products to be cleaned out, so I will be looking into those as well! I agree that sending out 5 a month is not ideal, however, most people probably don’t have more than 5 or so items to recycle at a time and this is a good option for them. I’ll be reusing packing material so that is not a concern. Your suggestion to put the items in my city’s recycling program would be a bad idea, as my city only is able to recycle certain materials and doing so would only take away from their time and resources. I hear you that none of this is ideal, and I agree, but I still feel it is better than tossing makeup empties into the landfill.
