If you're watching this video to lower cholesterol naturally and reduce your cholesterol levels, you should look into Dr. Esselstyn's book: amzn.to/3mTu7JD
While I came into this interview looking for ways to lower cholesterol through a vegan diet, I quickly learned that cholesterol is an essential part of the human body and there are other things to consider when it comes to preventing the risk of heart disease.

Hey Darren. I'm glad you got value from this interview. I'm not sure where you're located, but I have an interview with Lisa Simon, Registered Dietitian on this channel and asked her to record more videos to help with topics like this. She focuses on helping people choose exactly what to eat for things like this and is based in the UK. She is part of the website plantbasedhealthonline.com/ - In addition, Dr. Esselstyn's book is linked in the description of this video and I also interview Dr. Klaper on this channel where he mentions an online consultation with doctors that are educated on these topics as well. After speaking with them, I'm confident you'll find some answers with what you're looking for. I'll reach out to Lisa and ask her to record a video to go into more specifics on what you asked :) All the best, Andrew

Dr Dean Ornish has explanations and recommendations, and also recipes in his book The Spectrum (it means that there are options depending on how determined your are to become healthy) - and as you already have advanced heart disease, he has a hopeful message for you. You might be able to avoid surgery, but then you have to stick to his healthiest of healthy improvement program, which includes superhealthy plantbased wholefood eating, moderate exercise (don't overdo it, don't get injured), relaxation and visualization, and striving for stress-free and love-filled life, enough sleep, and initially some medication if needed, which can be minimized step by step, when improvements have been noticed. You might also want to take some supplements, at least till all deficiences are eleminated. Support-groups have been of help for many patients. Monitoring of your health-status could be very beneficient for you. If you are from the USA your insurance-plan may cover your joining his program, I kind of got that impression, but I'm European and don't really understand your system. Start here www.ornish.com/ His books surely are available in libraries so you can have the knowledge at low cost or no cost. In this link below you'll find *sample menu 3*, where (as far as I can read) all dairy and all other animal products are excluded - I think you should go for healthy (avoiding all sugar, salt, white foods, anything that gives food long shelf-life, color, taste), low-fat (but good fat), whole-food, all-vegan, start wheat-free, too, with your serious condition. But you can buy frozen vegetables, berries, and fruits if fresh are not sold where you live. www.ornish.com/sample-menu/ Hope you have already gotten started - all the best wishes for you amazing health-journey!

Esselstyn is a mammoth personality spreading the truth! I will average about 3 ounces of kale per day in the meal I eat twice a day which is whole wheat pasta and black beans (from a can) with cayenne pepper. I can tell my cardiovascular system is better and how would I know that? Nocturnal tumescence. It's an erection when waking up in the morning, and it's regular where previously on the standard American diet it was rare. Now, other things could cause the change of course. I'm happy to know I won't have health problems many other Americans have by eating this way.

Thank you. I had two TIAs two and a half years ago. I was put on a huge dose of statins and it crippled me up ( I couldn’t walk. It felt like knives in my legs ) and I had thick eczema around my eyes for weeks. I have never had high cholesterol. I went off it and started eating a WFPBD. I need to learn to eat a more balanced diet though and get off the sugar. I also found out I have Celiac’s. The doctor wants me to go back on a lose dose statin and take it every other day and COQ10. I need to learn more about these.

I love learning from this doctor and his family! I never knew how damaging sugar and meats, oils are and have completely changed my diet. I have varicose veins and sometimes elevated blood pressure but not high. The doctor is not concerned about my blood pressure. tonight it is 121/71 with pulse rate at 63 It had been normal 118/70 before I started eating the green leaf vegetables with balsamic vinegar. Does balsamic vinegar raise blood pressure? I'm concerned because I do believe what Dr. Esselstyn is teaching yet I'm very concerned why my blood pressure went up. I do not eat meat now and stay away from oils and processed white breads. Last night, I ate oatmeal with blueberries and Ezekel toast with strawberry jam. I ate a serving throughout the day of collard greens, spinach leaves and beet greens all boiled for a few min to soften and sprinkled with balsamic vinegar 4 times. My blood pressure was 121/71. and I have leg cramps. What am I doing wrong? I had my blood pressure under control, could it be the vinegar? I'm determined to learn from Dr. Esselstyn and do what he is teaching. My weight is normal for my height.

Hey Julie! It's Andrew. Glad Dr. Esselstyn's work has inspired you as well. I know he is a very busy man and I'm not sure if he will reply to this comment on my channel. If that's the case, I can help point you in the right direction for some help. On this channel, I interviewed Dr. Klaper - where he mentions in his video he does tele-consults. I may have linked it in the description of that video. He is a plant-based doctor just like Dr. Esselstyn and is the person I would go to for answers. Lisa Simon was also interviewed on this channel, and she's a dietician in the UK who does tele-consults too. And Dr. Klaper's book is linked in the description/first comment of this video - I'm not sure if you answer is in there but I wish you the best :)

@@DANAWORLD Hey - It's Andrew here. I'm not a doctor so I can't go into the science behind it, but from all the interviews I'm doing with health professionals - there is a lot of research about cutting out all animal products (chicken, dairy, etc.) and oil. I'm not all the way through Dr. Esselstyn's book, but if you look into Forks Over Knives (website, documentary) - there is a Whole Foods Plant Based No Oil movement that talks about the research and benefits of it. I personally have been vegan for many years, I've cut out virtually all processed items, and I still cook with oil myself sometimes. As an otherwise healthy 35 year old that stays active, I don't worry too much about it for myself. But check out the resources I mentioned because there is a lot of great info about it!

Nope no plummeting happened for me. It makes me so mad when people claim that. 240 to 200 in 3 months isn’t exactly plummeting. An improvement but definitely not a plummeting. Of course I’ll keep at it because it helped but it’s no miracle cure. There is literally nothing more I can do with my diet though to improve my cholesterol and my Triglycerides are still high and my HDL is still low. 🤷‍♀️ I also took the Amla, chia and flax he recommended too. I really expected better results. Also NO flour products. So frustrating. My blood pressure did drop from 135/85 to 115/78. That’s probably due to the sodium reduction.

From my personal experience I feel the crux of the issue of heart disease foremost centers on endothelial health. Regardless of serum lipids, a healthy endothelium is critical. Presumably, eating only a whole food, plant based diet with multiple, daily servings of kale, swiss chard, collards and other greens is vital for the endothelium. If an individual has a genetic quilt such that their serum lipids remain elevated beyond optimal levels despite eating only Esselstyn recommended plants, that individual has no choice but to make assumptions that they are nevertheless building an endothelial fortress or add anti-cholesterol drugs to their regimen. Which drugs...I doubt 4 hours of RU-vid could answer that one. Not everyone however, will see serum lipids plummet just because they only eat what Dr. Esselstyn suggests.

Hey Chad! It's Andrew from this channel. I too have heard conflicting information about this. I spoke with a Registered Dietician who says there are a lot of benefits for consuming olive oil in moderation and alongside a healthy WFPB diet. I've also read that when olives are processed, the fiber is taken out of it and that takes away healthy aspects of it i oil form. Dr. Esselstyn does a lot of work with people who have heart disease and brought up great points about how oil can damage certain systems in your body. I'm curious to learn just like you. My personal (non-medical) approach has resulted in drastically limiting my oil intake - but I still do use oil from time to time. I used less than half a tablespoon on a garbanzo bean salad. I'm working closely with a plant-based dietician to make video content for us and I'll see about her including that answer in a future video we post on the channel.

Esselstyn was never a cardiologist, RD or historian. The Tarahumara ate the food they did because that is all they could get and their life expectancy was around 35. The corn they had was more nutritious than what they have now in the USA but they had some deficiencies or low levels of Vitamin A1, B12, K2, Heme, CoQ10, DHA, C15:0, Choline, Sulfur and Taurine. The Maasai also have very low total cholesterol levels of about 120 mg/dL and George Mann got the arteries of those that died and they had extensive atherosclerosis like that of very old US men. In the early 1970's researchers went to Okinawa and found they lived to age 100 because of a more balanced diet with about 50% of fats and proteins from animal foods. I wouldn’t base a diet on the Bible. Besides, heavy meat consumption is probably what we did when we were hunter gatherers. The hunters would bring back a giant sized ruminant that the tribe would eat and eat for days or even weeks until it was finished, then they’d fast or eat whatever fruit, nuts and tubers could be gathered until the next kill. I doubt they had a concept of ‘a balanced diet’. They’d likely be in ketosis a lot of the time. Just guessing though. Nowadays, meat and its associated fat is plentiful, so we can eat it to satiety and then stop.
