Todays tutorial is the first in a new series where we refurbish and customize a beautiful knitted, vintage sweater we found in a thrift store in Paris. It is Norwegian and knitted with heavy wool, the neck line is tight and the sleeves are too short. We start by taking apart the turtleneck and use the yarn for a smaller collar. In the next episode we will start the sleeves.
This is the perfect tutorial for you, who has one or more old vintage sweaters at home, just waiting for a little refurbishing. Or if you don't feel like knitting a whole sweater, but you want to customize a sweater, we are here with some tips and ideas on what you can do to create something new out of something old.
We love repurposing old vintage items and thrift store shopping. If you are into vintage knitwear, we have some episodes about our collection: • A tour of ARNE & CARLO...
• How to Refurbish, Rede...

I enjoyed the calm concentration of this episode. I am knitting a mitten while watching and it felt like we were in sync. Nice project you have chosen. I like the narrower neckline also and thought Carlos's idea to use the black would be interesting to use as a way to extend the white areas. You could add a black matching pattern on the sleeves to lengthen them.

I'm with Carlos this time - a black collar and cuffs but with a couple of narrow stripes of the white would look great and tie them with that gorgeous pattern of colorwork.

Oh! Arne! You are a daredevil! Cutting into the knitting without first putting a needle in! What anxiety! You almost made me drop a stitch! But how gorgeous is that sweater! So glad you'll get more mileage out of it. The yarn looks like new. A thought, if the yarn you'll be using to lengthen the sleeves is not quite the same colour, how about using a different stitch? It's cheating but when creating, one must sometimes cheat!

I've knitted a sweater few years ago, which I rarely wear, since the collar is too tight and it does a pretty awkward crease on the shoulders. With this video you inspired me to take it out of the closet and re-knit the collar! Thank you as always for your inspirations!

Refurbishing old knitware reminds me of the "Bernie Sanders Mittens"! And my first sweater bought in Norway in 1974 was bought in the same shop. I still have it, and my children wore it, too.

What a cool idea. I hate wearing turtle necks, so I think removing it is a great project. My mom bought me a knitted cardigan that is very large. Some stitches came out, so I had the idea of taking it apart and remaking it in the proper size. It's not the same as this, but this helps with thinking that I can actually do it. Can't wait to see more of this project.

I have a cardigan that I bought in 1979 from the very same Siril Sweater Shop in Oslo as your sweater…with the very same label! have wondered for many years if the shop still existed…it was amazing…so many lovely sweaters to choose from, but I only bought one. I was young, on a tight budget and travelling with only a small backpack.

What a beautiful and worthy project!! I'm excited to see how you will redesign the arms! I love that you're changing from a turtleneck to a standard crew collar and making it just a bit wider. It would be interesting to see if using the new off white yarn as stripes above the cuffs would preserve enough yarn to keep the original yarn for the cuffs, but with a longer sleeve. I'm going to look around at the thrift store for a similar style sweater that can be repurposed!! I used to buy thrift sweaters in the past, but many years ago. Thank you for the inspiration!!

Hi Arne n Carlos, I wanted to share a story, with you all. When my son was 6. around 45 years ago, my husband and i were a very young couple starting out, and were very poor my son needed a new coat for school because he outgrew his one from the year before. My husband was a proud man, and absolutely would never except any sort of charity. While he was at his job one day, i removed the sleeve cuffs, and bottom of my sons jacket from previous year, and knitted new ones an inch or more longer than what was on the coat before. I will have to say...it turned out excellent! My husband was very relieved! And in a month or so we were able to buy him a new one, and got to wear the one i fixed for around the house 😊❤

This is a really interesting project with lots of skill. Thank you. For the sleeves, I think I would do a few rows of colourwork matching the front pattern as a way to disguise the change in yarn.

I was just within the last ten minutes looking at a sweater I am finishing (top down and I am on the lower hem) and was trying to decide whether and how to rework the collar, because I think I used the wrong size needle for the collar. Have you considered a couple rows of black on the neckline ? That is if you don’t have enough of the recycled white yarn from the original turtleneck. what a lovely sweater and Arne you give me so much confidence for what I am thinking of doing. I have a fine cashmere sweater with a turtle neck which is very tight and uncomfortable. I'm thinking of reducing the neck and will see if I can unravel it. But with it being such thin thread I may have to cut it and zigzag the end with the sewing machine. Then turn it to the inside to make a double crew neck. As I can't wear it because it's so uncomfortable I feel like I have nothing to lose!!

So I'm already wondering about the sleeves. If they were knit in pieces starting from the wrist and you try to unravel, you're going to come up with the same issue as what you had thecthe neck.
