It's never to late! I am sixty one but in the last 4 years I have lost 6 stone, grown my hair and bought a whole new stylish wardrobe. I'm even wearing skinny jeans!

Even though I’m only 12, you have helped me so much just now, in just a few days is 2019 and I’m so ready for it! Especially school, I wanna step up my game, be the person I know I can! Thank you so much!

I wish I'd been as self-aware and proactive when I was 12. Remember that every day (minute, even) is a chance to start again. Small steps, if you continue to make them, will take you huge distances. And never be afraid of a challenge. Some things are hard as a way of separating out the people who aren't willing to put in the effort from people like you, who'll stick through the tough times and reap the rewards on the other side. Best of luck, and a very happy New Year... and new you! 🙂

I've revisited thisvideo today, as I needed a kick up the arse. I've decided that the new me isn't going to waste another whole weekend giving into my fatigue and pain, so I'm getting up, getting ready and and going to go for a bike ride with Mr.B and get out in nature. I'll still be tired and sore, so why not add happy to it, right? :)

Great video, Thankyou! I've been working on a new me, for four years, since finishing breast cancer treatment. I have pruned toxic people, changed my hair, doing fitness, put down better boundaries. Now looking at doing my artwork for a living, seeing as I've always been able to draw. Love your videos, thank you so much. From Aussie

I realize I did exactly what you did to combat shyness! That's amazing. Thank you so much for all the wonderful pointers. Lavendair also did a video where she simply draws pictures of how she sees herself now vs how she wants to be, then work towards all the things she wants to have. Again, thanks so much!

I do a "life cleanout" the way some people purge their closets. What I've come across with recommending it to friends is that they seem to think personality is a fixed thing. I cringe when I hear someone say "I'm the kind of person that..." - Only if you want to be! Disabilities aside, the traits we call our personality we have developed by watching the people around us; parents, friends, teachers, etc. from a very young age until it becomes behavior. If something isn't working for you, stop doing it! It takes being mindful until it becomes a habit NOT to do it/ be that way, but it doesn't take very long. If you want to be a tidy person MORE than you want to be a messy person then be a tidy person. If it's only half-assed important to you than you won't change it but criminy stop complaining like it's out of your hands! :D It's not in our DNA to be tidy or messy, someone who exercises or not, is conservative or flamboyant. These are choices we make sometimes without noticing. If we are aware of them and do them anyway then we are getting something out of it. I 'try things on'. You can be both academic AND creative. They aren't mutually exclusive. I'm both an introvert and an extrovert. Too much of either and I'm not happy but I choose both. Thank you for putting this video out. It **sparkled**** me!
@HowToGYST
@HowToGYST 7 лет назад
I don't often say this but... PREACH! 😂 What people really mean when they say, "I'm not..." is "That's not a priority for me." Which is absolutely fine, of course, but I think people would fret less if they at least acknowledged and accepted it. I LOVE the idea of your "life cleanout". I'm actually planning a video on how to do a "life reset", which sounds very similar. How often do you do yours? Or is it just as and when you feel like it?
@sheamonieux3409
@sheamonieux3409 7 лет назад
For me, it's an ongoing process as I learn more about 'how I work' but I generally will get a feeling that I've come to recognize. It's sort of a not excited about tomorrow/ stagnant kind of feeling. That's when I know I need to make something different happen. I think it's easier for people if they have a catalyst like a fresh start or new year's day. For myself, "When you NEED to do something, start it anyway you can. Jump in!" (Oddly, that was advice I got from the school janitor when I was 11years old.) The traits I lived with most of my life I got from family and adults in my childhood. They basically trained me how to survive and "fit in" and how to pick up their idiosyncrasies as my own or rebel from them. They didn't teach me how to have personal joy. When I sort of "woke up" to that I was so excited to find the things that would make my life fun and full. With the internet I have teachers and examples of every faction of life and lifestyle from around the world to glean bits from. That is how I found you. :)

Love this! Really relevant to me right now. I've been now in a new suburb for a year and haven't made any social connections there. Still love my current friends, but realized i'm looking outside my area for my social life. So I'm starting to look at local activities and meet up groups and such. Haircut is booked for tomorrow! I'm doing the CHOP! I've also decided that I miss being active - and that my excuse is because people I know don't seem to want to ice skate or rock climb etc. But I DO. So i'll just go by myself. Or start a new local tribe for these adventures. Super inspiring stuff Laura!

I’m a little late to comment here, but I just wanted to say that I really appreciate what you said here. I’m reinventing my weight, fitness and eating habits with the help of an app and two of my best friends this year. Since January, I have lost almost 16 pounds! I’m very proud of myself because I have done it gradually and have really tried to focus on health rather than looks. I have 60 pounds to go, but I truly believe I can lose at least most of it this year (it’s now March.) It has all been in my head all this time. Thanks for the encouragement!

Good luck in America! :) I completely agree with you. After a year of anger and stress I'm turning a new chapter in my life. I got a new job, started reading books and playing video games again. I have decluttered our home and I am thinking of cutting my hair. I am looking forward to the better me and better life. :) The anger and stress are gone. It feels like I found myself again. The change has also positively impacted my husband. He is also a lot happier and more relaxed than before.

Hiya Laura! So much of this has been going through my mind, but seeing a list to work through really helps. In my 50s and recently diagnosed with MS, I don't want to be the person I used to be because it was all about pleasing others. .Life changes again and again with time and with those changes comes a reboot in friendships. Singer songwriter Dougie MacLean said it best in his song Caledonia, "lost the friends that I needed loosen' fund others on the way" Sometime people can bring out the worst in us. We need friends that accentuate our best qualities. Good advice Laure. And enjoy your stay in America ❤️

Thanks for the video!! I am really wanting to be a tidy, organized person. Right now that's not me, but you have just convinced me that it CAN be me!! REALLY appreciate all your decluttering and KonMari posts, too. :) I felt like I was making good headway with the decluttering til I hit First Trimester with Baby 4... First off, awesome profile pic. 😉 And yes, you absolutely CAN be a tidy, organised person. Start with a small area and keep it clean for a week. Then spread out bit by bit. @HowToGYST
@HowToGYST 7 лет назад
There are lots of options, depending on which you feel most comfortable with. You could look at some styles in a magazine to get an idea of what you'd like, and then bring it to a (trusted) stylist and ask which one they think would suit you best, and then just go for it. (Remember, hair grows back, so even if you don't like it, it's only temporary.) Or plan it over a few trips, going a little shorter each time, if you'd prefer to acclimatise to it little by little. 🙂

I don't know how it will be where you go, but me, coming from Paris, France, and arriving in L.A. for sure I had to change a lot! No choice: everything is so much faster here and in France, we used to be kind of assisted a lot! Here, it's like a kick in the a.. We have to move on, alone, nobody to help us, to help me more exactly. It's hard but I think I became a stronger and more independent person. We learn a lot in the US! I also learnt that as a French woman, I was slightly snobbish and uptight beside the American mentality... We learn every day... :-)

Kings Island is an amusement park north of the city, and there is a water park there, too. Main Event in West Chester (north of city) is a nice arcade, bowling, golf). Indianapolis is a little longer than an hour (1.5 -2 hours) but they have a great children's museum. Columbus, Louisville and Lexington are all about 1.5 hours. Perfect North in Indiana has skiing & tubing in the winter. And of course Cincinnati has quite a bit to do. Hopefully that helps!

I am struggling with memory issues and I am changing. I am not liking the person I am changing into. This came at the right time for me Laura and I so appreciate it. I go Tuesday for a 4 hour test on my memory. I am anxious, scared and afraid. I want to be a person who is empowered and faces her fears head on. I am trying, it's hard right now. I have removed toxic people from my life, too much stress!! Now to get rump out of office!!

Oh, best of luck with your test, Deb! Remember that, no matter what happens, you'll learn something new about yourself that you can then deal with in the appropriate way. Approach it with curiosity, safe in the knowledge that, whatever the result, you're still a wonderful woman with many gifts and talents. x

Yeah, and away from open space :- ) My working languages are only Czech and English; my German is not good enough for translating. Think back over situations you've been in previously where you felt comfortable, confident, happy, etc. What were you doing? Do more of that. And then notice the times you've felt bad or uncomfortable, and try to avoid being that person. 🙂 A lot of it just comes down to noticing how you feel in certain situations.

I don't know who I am out who I want to be. I used to know, but life has thrown me so many curve balls that I don't see any way out. My husband and I were going to move to Michigan but a sh*tty roommate killed that dream. I was going to college but had to drop because of my depression. Now I owe the school money and can't go back. I used to have dreams. Now I feel like they'll never come true. There are so many changes my husband and I want, but due to finances and the environment we live in, I don't know that we'll ever get out. Even the style of clothing we like we can't afford.
@elizarock655
@elizarock655 7 лет назад
Aqua Krys another exercise I've heard of is thinking of all the wonderful things that have happened in your life that you had nothing to do with? Sounds weird right? Leave that thought stewing in your head and it's amazing what occurs to you. Like, physical assets you may have, a school education or small things like a friend helping you out. I know how hard it is when you're broke and your dreams seem impossible but this exercise really got me out of a rut. Great video thanks HTGYST x
@HowToGYST
@HowToGYST 7 лет назад
Yes, focusing more on gratitude for the things you do have can really make a difference. 🙂 I'd also say to start with something really small and gain control of that. Maybe it's making $10 in extra repayments off your student debt every week, maybe it's keeping one surface in your home clear, maybe it's selling 10 items of your current clothes to afford 1 you really want... I understand your frustration at wanting so many things, so focus on one at a time and build from there. 🙂

Another great video! So... when you quit your legal career to become a blogger and RU-vidr, how did it go initially? Did you quit cold turkey, like with the chocolate, or did you work on both jobs for a while before you took the leap? Was your family okay with your decision? What gave you the courage to go for it?
@HowToGYST
@HowToGYST 7 лет назад
I took maternity leave from my legal career when I had my daughter, and then started my blog and just never went back. For a while I worked on cases that were still ongoing, but that's all phased out now. My family are very supportive, but the truth is that I didn't really confer with any of them on the issue. The decision was mine to make. I obviously informed them, but it would never have been up for debate. (I'll always be so thankful to my parents for raising me to be so independent.) In terms of courage, I won't lie, it was made MUCH easier by the fact that, if we had to, we could survive on my husband's income. Also, I decided many years ago that my personal happiness was worth more to me than money (as long as my basic needs were covered, of course). I used to work 7 days a week and it took its toll. I jacked in one of the two jobs I was working (even though all my colleagues said I was mad to say goodbye to the extra money) and never looked back.
@ninnawiberg4772
@ninnawiberg4772 7 лет назад
Thank you so much for your response! I've been thinking a lot about my current situation lately, and I know that I am not happy with it, I'm just unsure of how to move away from it, and into something that I can be happy and content with. Will have to ponder some more on that.
@HowToGYST
@HowToGYST 7 лет назад
Definitely do. Being unhappy is no way to live. In your spare time, try lots of different things. Experiment with different hobbies, do lots of research into things that interest you or catch your eye, join a local group, sign up for a class... Note how you feel when you're trying all these things. (It can be too easy to just "coast" and not really pay much attention.) You'll quickly discover what truly makes you happy. And I bet, if you give it some quick consideration, you'll be able to think of a good starting point. 🙂 The truth is that there are lots of things out there that will make you happy, and all you have to do is go looking for them. Best of luck!

A little, but not impossible. Limit contact as much as possible. Do you know if others in the family feel the same way? It can be much easier when you have some support. Surround yourself with as many positive people as possible. They'll help drown out any negativity you're forced to face. Good luck.

I finished a book called You Are A Badass. The author's style is fresh, funny and slightly scatological. She isn't telling you anything you weren't aware of (we have all heard and experienced many of the items she discusses), but the sense that you are not alone in your experiences is wonderfully relieving and supportive. Reading this reminded me that we are all very powerful beings and that the leap of faith is very much worth the effort. Happy Re-invention! Out of curiosity, in what part of the US will you be living? It's a huge country. What an adventure!
