It shouldn't have been a complete waste for you though, as you do get great items for releasing your Pokemon. Just bunch up the Pokemon you've kept into the 4 boxes, and you should be good to go :)

I think you just have to progress more through the story. I unlocked it after the Arcanine bit in the story. You'll get it just fill up the boxes

@@GamerGuruOfficial I've released about 100 so far ahaha. I am currently 5 star rank but only in the second zone. Haven't moved on from that minefield area yet.

@@GamerGuruOfficial hey, so I figured it out. Least I think so. It's progression. I couldn't do it until I unlocked the third area of the map. Can't say if I explored first or not but I can now release multiple after having 3rd area :) if anyone catches hundreds of Pokemon before it 😂

You can always re-encounter pokemon, except for legendary pokemon. That’s why he has multiple, and it’s even required that you encounter multiple to complete the pokedex, and if you catch 6 of every pokemon you will not have enough space to store them.

Also, past games were like this too. You could always re-encounter pokemon as long as the weren’t legendary.
