Continuing my #languagehacking series, here is a video discussing a cool technique to visually tie the letters in with something that can help you remember them easier.
In this case, I use the Thai letter า as an example
Hat tip to Stujay Raj for the original idea behind this mnemonic!

As a Thai, I'll never see the vowel -า the same anymore.

Winner of a video, I have been researching "a good way to memorize things" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Yiyevi Ponevi Approach - (search on google ) ? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my partner got amazing results with it.

I've been wanting to share this particular language hack, since people have found it funny when I mention it at my in-person talks and events. Hopefully it translates over to RU-vid well! Thanks again to Stujay for the idea!

This reminds me of how my husband remembers his Cantonese (he's since given up - we're in Cz so it's not like you get to use Canto EVER). Anyway, when I told him what skyscrapers were in Cantonese, he said, "Ah right. Die hard!" And another time when I was saying the word "balloon" to our daughter in Canto, he smiled and said, "Hey, cow!" :D This also reminds me of some learn Cantonese videos, one of which told students to meeeeh like a goat any time they wanna say "What?" in Cantonese.

I would imagine an old man holding a walking stick and hiting his foot and screaming out ahhh..and the letter would look like the cane he's holding..

+Supriya Rane Mnemonics have to work for the person who uses them. So if the way I suggest doesn't come naturally to you, and the cane does, then go for it! :) For me, shouting in pain is more like "arrrrrgh", and I wanted to make sure to capture something closer to the vowel sound 🤣

First thing i am a huge fan! I didnt mean fight ur example but I was just saying what came to my mind.I have been practicing ur technique for learning korean and I am enjoying it!..I understand it would be different for different people to imagine the letter..In india we tend to cry out ahh when we are hurt...So don't mind..

lol, I didn't think you were fighting 😄 I agree that your example works well for you. Sorry if that wasn't clear! Thanks for watching my videos 😉

LOL that was an hilarious example Benny, but like you pointed out...the more vivid and outrageous an association you make with the word/letter, the more easier it'll be for you to remember.

I find this is the easiest way to learn new languages! Like when I learned the Japanese Hiragana the character for "YU" looks like this: ゆ So my mnemonic for it is "YU' almost caught a fish b/c it looks like a fish on a hook xD
@irishpolyglot
@irishpolyglot 7 лет назад
I think I actually used the same mnemonic when I was learning Hiragana 😀

It's funny because I didn't actually see that as a mnemonic anywhere else haha (not that I actually went looking for it tho lol)

What's with the cheesy background music?
@irishpolyglot
@irishpolyglot 7 лет назад
What's cheesy about it? Videos are more watchable if they have some music in the background rather than silence while I speak. It's just a random song I put there. 😉

Benny may have outsourced the background music task to someone (\cough\ me \cough\) with questionable music tastes. But I stand by my choice! Cheesy is the new classy!
