When you got a hammer everything is a nail. Do not be that guy/gal. If you want to remove a wheel hub stud without going all Forged in Fire on it there are better ways, this is one of them. Good luck with your project.

Thank you! I was getting tired of watching all the other videos, "here we're just going to whisper soft words and apply 3 little taps with my magic ball pean hammer, and the lugs will happily fly out". Mine arent moving even when I'm swinging my 3lb sledge at them. This tool is what I need.

That got a chuckle out of me, I could almost hear it. I am glad I could help.

Thank you so much for posting this. Had a broken stud and did not want to hammer it or use heat. Tried this and it worked like charm.

This is a great idea. I am afraid to use hammer and break my axle gears. Thank you!

Soooo how bout when the opening on the fork side isnt wide enough to go around the head of the stud??? Cuz thats where I'm at in the rain....

Find a couple of washers that can go around the head and make a spacer.

This has to be the best DIY method I have seen on youtube. Thank you so much.

Does it have to be 3/4 inch? Or can a similar ball joint separator with different specifications work as well?
@asquaregarden

That one is the most common one available but I don’t see why another similar size would not work if it fits.

I was thinking about trying to use my medium barrel air chisel (with a hammer bit in it) and try to hammer them out but I'm doubting that it'll have enough oomph to do it, have you ever tried that method?
@asquaregarden
@asquaregarden 5 месяцев назад
I have not but that is as close to using a sledge hammer as you can get.

@asquaregarden If I ever need to I'll probably try it first since I already have the tools.

The advantage of using a ball joint tool is that there is no impact vibration. In all honesty I would probably just use a sledge hammer vs an air chisel.

I was sold on the idea until I saw the pressing mechanism bending the stud as it arced around. Is there a tool like this which just presses straight down on the stud (I hope a press isn't the only option).

There are tools but are generally really expensive. I have one example in the description. As far as bending the stud, it must have been the angle of camera. I doubt you can bend a hardened bolt on that little travel. There is probably a total of 10 degrees rotation. The pivot of the tool has 100 times more slop in it than that.

@@asquaregarden Skip from 0:38 to 1:05 and look at the spacing of the thread on the bottom and the top of stud - perhaps it's the lighting but it does look closer on the bottom than the top by 1:05 but not so much at 0:38. One thing I will say though is: if you do use a hammer, it's worth having a large thick rubber grommit to place over the stud before you start hitting it. I just hit mine out then hit the brand new hub I had and left a mark on it! I'm really gutted by that as I paid to get them all the way from the US!

If it came out that easily two quick 1:59 hits with a 4lb hammer would have done it. Any seized stud would just break this tool.
