How to remove an olive

It can be difficult removing an olive from a piece of pipe, although you can buy dedicated tools for the job such as an olive cutter or an olive puller. In many cases you can remove the olive by striking the nut with a large adjustable spanner. Copper olives and brass olives can both be removed using this method.

I just removed an olive by cutting it off with a dremel flexible shaft very carefully. I cut about 3/4 of the way through and then used a screwdriver. I was working in a confined space and the old pipe work was very fragile, so this approach worked well.

If the olive is a bit too stubborn or you are struggling for space to use the spanner method, use a junior hacksaw. Just cut a small slice in the olive making sure not to damage the pipe then use a flat head screwdriver in the slot, twist and it will split the olive. Olive splitters are so damn expensive and you need one for each size of pipe.

good tip, however most of the time you are trying to remove an olive you have about 4" of pipe! I tend to just use some water pump pliers and grip the olive ever so slightly (experience over time will tell you by how much) and with a bit to to and fro action will come off. I especially use this on radiator pipes as you normally don't have a huge amount of pipe to play with.

Half inch spanner for half inch pipework three quarter for three quarter always worked for me too. Only problem is when a monkey has compressed the pipe too far to make removal impossible and pointless. Attaching a fitting loosely means that the olive doesn’t end up flying into that part of the floor that holds a 3rd dimension from which nothing returns 😊

I am using channel locks on the nut and pulling hard towards me, slamming into the olive over and over again. Wish I had put some oil on the tube before I started. The last little bit where the olive reached the end took 90% of the time. Not sure what the issue was, but it worked without having to buy a tool. Flipping youtube always show a 30 minute project, then I get into it and rust, need a new tube, then brake the valve, so have to replace that.

Truly! I was stuck in the most awkward position looking up at a valve between two rafters that I could only reach with one hand. I had to remove a standard chrome isolation valve which was leaking - can you believe the plumber inserted the valve to a radiator feed. Anyway, the thing was leaking so I had my JG speedfit coupler at the ready (amazing products) but I just couldn't get those blasted olives off. With your tip it took me 5 seconds. Bearing in mind it was 11 pm , freezing outside and the heating and hot water was unusable so if I hadn't fixed the problem I would have been in deep cold water. Thanks again!!

@stever5887 5 лет назад
U.H.--No offense, but I'm not sure you'll ever find an olive on a piece of pipe this long coming out of a wall. What application is this supposed to illustrate? In the U.S., we usually only see a brass olive on a short (1/2" X 3" long) supply pipe behind a toilet or under a sink supplying hot and cold water. In that instance, you'll generally need a compression sleeve puller to easily remove the brass olive (and the large nut behind it).
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 5 лет назад
Compression fittings can be used to join two pieces of pipe together, so you could need to remove an olive on a long run of pipe. This technique is only shown, as most people think they have to buy an expensive "olive puller" or "olive cutter" to remove the olive. Thanks for the comment 👍

I have always thought that olives permanently deform to fit the joint cavity after the nut is tightened. (?) Even if not, I'm surprised why someone would risk re-using them. They are so inexpensive.
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 9 лет назад

If you’ve never used this method you are no plumber. Any pro plumber would carry spare olives. The nuts and fittings don’t always match but the olives always do unless you are unfortunate to encounter 17 gauge pipe. Then you need a pipe crusher.
