I walk through how to remove the brake dust cover on a car without needing to remove the hub using some needle nose pliers and heat after removing the brake caliper and rotor. I also show how to reinstall everything after removing the brake dust cover. This car is a 2007 Honda Fit.

These are on there for a reason, multiple actually, they protect brake components while protecting suspension and other components from the heat generated by rotors. The only valuable purpose this video serves is how to remove a bad brake shield in order to replace it with a new one.

Mine are like 60 quid each so what do they protect again and they aren’t doing anything for heat nice blag tho
@ronnie3044
@ronnie3044 Год назад
They do nothing in terms of protecting suspension parts. Your rotors will not get hot enough to produce enough heat to hurt your suspension. Rotors only produce heat when in motion...which means your suspension is being cooled by the air anyway. Its a cheap piece of thin steel. Its not doing much.

GMC uses the rear dust shields to support the parking brake pad(s). No dust shield no parking brake, no parking brake no valid inspection sticker.

My rear drivers side dust cover has completely rusted off of the points where it holds onto the hub. Basically just a disc that spins freely behind the rotor, but it won't come out unless I cut it, because it's around around the axle. So its basically a rusted disc thats hitting my rotor over and over as the rotor spins (think when you had a bicycle and would attach a card or crushed metal can to the wheel so it would hit the bicycle spokes as your wheel turned, that's what it sounds like) And its very annoying. Hopefully I can get it off from under the car without taking the wheel off at all. Obviously it would happen a month and a half after replacing the caliper and pads on that side..its been a rusty disc for years..but now it just finally decided to completely break free. Cant even find my snips in all my tools 🤦

I am in the same exact situation, and it happened after the brakes were changed. Did you ever get yours off? Im considering trying breaking off pieces of it with a plier, without having to remove the wheel.

If trying to replace the brake dust cover, how would you install the new brake dust cover after taking the old one off? Or is it not necessary to have one?

its best to leave them on, due to rainy weather , dust etc, the cover helps prevent water on rotors and brakes not stopping as they should

Not really. Also if they get bent they will scrape against the rotor and make a very high pitched noise
@99shadows66
@99shadows66 Год назад
Yes, you do, not only do the dust shields keep brake dust from landing all over the suspension parts, they help direct air around the brake rotors to increase cooling to keep the brake rotors from warping. Do you really think car makers would install a part on a car that costs them $$ if it didn't serve any purpose? Don't re-engineer your car unless you are a smarter engineer than those that designed the vehicle. I chuckle at all those folks that think that these parts don't do anything for the vehicle.

so why would one hack up a completely normal and solid dust cover lol
@homegr0wn
@homegr0wn 2 года назад
I've found that they seem to cause additional corrosion on a car's brake components, especially cars in the Midwest. The covers tend to rust fairly quickly and can cause rust to spread. Also, a lot of people that track their cars will remove them because they cause the brakes to keep additional heat and lose braking responsiveness. The only thing they do is keep brake dust from floating outside of the area, which is not something that most people are worried about. So, a lot fo reasons.
@viisteist1363
@viisteist1363 2 года назад
@@homegr0wn it might protect the pads and rotor from small rocks on the road tho? and because there are less rocks on te track, then its also not needed in there that much?
@VincentStevenson
@VincentStevenson 2 года назад
In the past, I’ve had the dust cover rub against the rotor and it makes a very loud squeal. Removing it helps prevent that, also it makes it faster for the rotors to cool down so that can help improve braking down hills.
