Some concrete floors are weak and when you pull the nails, the concrete will break and crater bad. Take your hammer and grab the nail between the claw.. Pull the hammer toward the claw to pry the nail.. Less crater.

Well, I did remove my tack strips with a screw driver - the WRONG way! I did get all the wood up. My problem was getting all the nails up, now I know what to tool to go out to get them up. Nice to know this for the other 2 bedrooms that need carpeting removed. Thanks for advising on that tool - great video! One other problem I have is small patches of padding I just cant remove. Should I use a chemical as seen on other videos or is there a tool for that too? I sure hope so! I have had concrete flooring for far too long!

I would try a thick floor scraper, not the thin flexible putty knife type, but try a 5 in one tool, something rigid with a blade to scrape that padding up off the concrete.

jeffostroff Now that I have removed the tack strips from my hardwood floors, I discovered there’s old paint along the perimeter of the room. It’s approx 1/2 inch wide from the paint brush swiping the floor when they painted the baseboards. Do you have any DIY recommendations on how to remove this 20 year old paint without it turning into a major job?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 5 лет назад
@@drucker71 Why do you need to remove the paint? Are you planning on sanding the hardwood floors, and trying to renew the old floor? If that is the case, I think sanding is the only option.
@drucker71
@drucker71 5 лет назад
jeffostroff I removed the carpeting and prefer my beautiful wood floors. I’m doing it all myself and wanted to avoid a major project as there’s still furniture in the room. So the paint along the perimeter is now visible and I don’t like it. Despite being a novice, I’m ok with removing it myself but not sure what product will do the trick.

great video. How do you fill up the holes left by the nails please?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 4 года назад
I don't, there's usually no reason to, they are relatively small and not too deep. If you;re tiling, they just get filled in with tile thin set. If you are installing wood flooring, you roll down an underlayment over the concrete floor then the wood planks, so you will never see nor feel these holes.
@klodianhatia908
@klodianhatia908 4 года назад
jeffostroff , I am putting vinyl planks. Do I need to fill those holes at all?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 4 года назад
@@klodianhatia908 No we install vinyl planks all the time and don't fill in the holes. The planks will be plenty rigid once you click in a few rows. Those small nail holes are not big enough to be felt through the underlayment and planks, or even a vinyl tile without and underlayment.

I don't but I would think a flooring supply house would have it . A large red scraper with a sixth inch replaceable blade would be easy enough to find note have had mine forever and recently have purchased another hopefully they're available in the area. You have to throw the blade out a little bit to use it on wood it will dig into the subfloor at first until it dulls out a little bit but after that you should be fine I've never replaced the blade of mine I have sharpened one for a glue down job one time I I hope that helps

Sometimes we get nickel or quarter sized or even silver dollar sized holes there's no need to fix them there's absolutely no reason to because the planks will just go right over them. Those are good too, how wide is yours? Only problem is the nail spacing they used under the tack stip, whether you can get it between the nails or not. @westondoesit6127

This is BAD advice. DO NOT pry up. The nail will take portions of concrete with and leave a "crater" like he says, which creates more repair work. The efficient way is to use the crow bar against the nail and TAP with a hammer until you jiggle the nail, and it frees up. Very little concrete is disturbed, the strip is more likely to stay in one piece, and you won't have small bits flying at your face from the prying he recommends. Do your own research and even try it yourself.
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 4 года назад
what you just said is what we were doing, we slide under the head of the nail and it pulls up. Often times we encounter rust nails that break rather than jiggle up. There are often broken or soggy sections from water damage where the wood pulls up and around and you are stuck with a nail poking up. Yes they often leave a crater when you do, but they are small and don't effect any other flooring efforts.
