Loved your video... especially that my viewers have complained about my basement studio sound... the only problem is that I don't want to hang stuff on walls and those blankets were a bit pricy for me.. but it is great to keep it in mind for the future... loved the video and the way you explained it... well done.

I had a few of the B&H Matthews ones. They are just very expensive packing blankets and are not really made for blocking out sound. I have a few of the Vocal Booth ones and, as you know, they are great. They are specifically manufactured for blocking sound/studio use. The B&H ones are not. Studio is coming a long. Looks great!

These are moving blankets. Some brands make thicker versions, which I would personally consider a true "sound blanket", but for myself, I went and purchased several moving blankets for about $15 each. Double them up (which is what I've done) and you've got a "sound blanket" for $20. I then bought a gromet kit, which is SUPER easy to use, cut some slits in the blankets and hammered the gromets in. I've got my studio totally covered for less than the cost of one "sound blanket" from those professional brands. I have a boomy voice, creates a lot of room reverb reflections, the moving blankets, sorry, "sound blankets" solved that problem for me.

There is a big difference between absorption and refraction. It’s incredibly hard to make a room soundproof. But to deaden the sound within the room it’s not hard at all. The main reason studio foam is popular is because of its curved surfaces, it absorbs a little and refracts quite a bit. I don’t recommend studio foam unless it is advertised as fire retardant. An insurance company won’t pay out if you put foam on your walls unless you prove it’s high quality and fire retardant. You guys definitely hit the nail on the head with high density blankets, the only way you could make it better is to make sure the blankets are never straight and have lots of folds in them.

Sound blankets are good for upper mid-range and highs, but almost meaningless for low mid-range and low end sound, which is MORE destructive but not as obvious (the "reverb" you were talking about). You can get some bass traps in the corners where any walls meet at a 90 degree angle to help.

Thanks for this video. I'm trying to do a DIY video studio in my basement on the cheap and I was concerned about the low 8 ft. ceiling. I have tile floor and threw down about six pillows for sound dampening between my and my camera, hung a blanket behind the camera, and draped a blanket over a closet door that's nearby. I still have some echo but it's much better than before. Once I can afford sound blankets I'll look into that option; this is just a hobby for me. Do you recommend putting some sort of padding on a ceiling that's 8 feet?

There are some great diy acoustic panels ideas on the web, you have to put some foam on the ceiling, some small rugs on the floor as well. And of course, keep the microphone close. Corners and parallel surfaces are the more vulnerable spots. You need to add some extra stuff in the corners or build a bass trap. And if the mic stays out of frame, you can also get a microphone acoustic shield. Anyway, the best way to fight with sound reflection is with more layers of dampeners. If you use blankets, then they don't need to be heavy, but need to add more of them.

Try getting a directional microphone like the Rode NTG if you can and point it right between your mouth and chest to get a clean sound. Lav mics are the next best imo. Condenser microphones usually record a lot more of the background/ambience sounds.

@RedBearAK
@RedBearAK 5 лет назад
Good change. But you're left with a bass resonance problem. You will need bass traps in every ceiling corner to knock that down. Maybe even floor and wall corners. The blankets can do almost nothing to control the bass reflections with all that concrete. But they’re great for the mid to higher frequencies. Edit: To those who seem to think that bass traps are unnecessary for cleanly recording anything other than bass drums, I have to respectfully disagree. The general definition of "low" frequencies in audio is anything from 20hz all the way up to 250hz. The sound blankets, while they are the best available at an affordable price (and I also recommend them), are tested to have low and rapidly decreasing attenuation of frequencies below 250hz. They aren't even tested below 100hz, where they are basically ineffective already. Typically the human voice is rolled off around 80hz without affecting the impact of the "fullness" of the voice. If you go up to 120hz you're already starting to make male voices sound thin, and 160hz is only used when you are forced to cut through some wind noise to even make a voice understandable. So even with a hard bass roll-off at 80hz you're still faced with the reverberation of anything from about 78hz to around 500hz, that cannot be adequately controlled by sound blankets. Those frequencies will concentrate in the corners of the room and reflect back into the microphone. They will be much better controlled by some deep foam blocks (or thick folded blankets or whatever you can find) in the ceiling corners. Bass roll-off is not a magic cure for low frequency reverberation in a small, enclosed space, even if the human voice doesn't go down to 40hz like a drum kit. When the room itself is basically a concrete box, you will need some bass traps to get a clean recording of a person talking in a normal tone with no other audio in the track to cover up the reverb. This is not the same thing at all as trying to record someone playing instruments, a whole band, or a singer that will then be mixed with a music track. Recording clean unaccompanied spoken word voice over is hard. On headphones I can clearly hear the barrel effect in all post-treatment sound clips in the video. Even the part at the end with the lav mic. And these aren't even very good headphones.
@snoooozer
@snoooozer 5 лет назад
They're trying to control their voices, not booming bass-filled music. Blankets are just fine to soak up these frequencies.
@synthjorisendedraak
@synthjorisendedraak 5 лет назад
It's not like they're recording drums in there. For the vocal range this is fine, just high pass to remove the lower frequencies.
@RedBearAK
@RedBearAK 5 лет назад
wathehek - That is not true. I know people like to say you can roll off frequencies below 80hz without having much effect on the human voice, but there are still frequencies all the way down around 60hz. It’s just that they aren’t considered important to understanding the voice. In such a hard, enclosed, naturally reverberant room those “unimportant” lower frequencies (and any lower frequencies from other sources) are enough to cause the “talking in a barrel” effect I’m hearing during the post-treatment parts of the video. The Noise Reduction Coefficient of the sound blankets (literally the exact brand they are using) drops from 1.09 (very good) at 5000hz to 0.04 (very poor) at even 100hz, well into human voice range. The lower frequencies find their way into corners and get amplified and reflected back to the center of the room, right where the microphone is typically placed. I guarantee you that room will sound much better with at least a couple of bass traps, even if the only sound source is the human voice.
@RedBearAK
@RedBearAK 5 лет назад
@@synthjorisendedraak - I disagree. Rolling off below 80hz will help of course, but the sound blankets are already poor at controlling frequencies below 250hz. Even with bass roll-off you still have a problem with everything between 75hz-ish and 300hz-ish bouncing around largely unimpeded in a room like that. That's well into important human voice frequencies. Bass roll-off is not a total cure for the barrel sound that results. They also aren't recording a band, they are recording normal speech in an otherwise quiet room. The dominance of even a slight bass reverb is entirely different in such a scenario where there is nothing else to cover up the effect or otherwise make it less perceptible. The only way to completely keep it out of the recording is to stop it from happening in the first place. With bass traps. They aren't just for bass drums.
@synthjorisendedraak
@synthjorisendedraak 5 лет назад
@@RedBearAK Your point is completely valid. For the best result bass traps would definitely be a good thing to have. Where I disagree is that they are necessary. The video is about turning a room that is unusable into a room that sounds fine. I only listened to the audio on my laptop speakers and the before and after comparison was a clear improvement. Most people watch youtube on a laptop or phone, so for most people watching there is simply no real bass at all. If you want to go all the way for the people watching with headphones or decent speakers than bass traps is a good next step, but it involves a lot more money, time and effort to get you that final 10%. Whether or not that is worth it for a photography channel is at least debatable.

What kills me is lots of bars and other places used for social gatherings and live bands have absolutely no sound treatment of any kind, so you just get a huge cacophony of noise when a lot of people show up and start talking at the same time, particularly when there's also music involved. It doesn't take a genius to improve it. Anything with a soft surface--furniture, clothes, rugs, etc.--will contribute to improving the situation. Sure, you can spend insane amounts of money on fancy gear designed for studios, but for most purposes, you just need something to kill the bulk of the echoes, not create an ideal recording environment.

@@FStoppers =) yeah! It's different. A reverberation is perceived when the reflected sound wave reaches your ear in less than 0.1 second after the original sound wave. You need a big room if you want to get an echo. You cannot get a echo in a small room.

@FStoppers
@FStoppers Год назад
Yeah that and moisture issues probably (and the termite mounds here are insane!). That being said, I bet Florida and much of the east coast of the US get hit with stronger hurricanes more often than PR and those structures are primarily wood framed homes. Having now bought a home in PR, I def prefer wood framed homes still. The insulation value of concrete is basically zero so the power bills here are outrageous if you like AC. The reverb inside is a problem too (obviously as this video shows). I've also noticed how bad the solid tile floors are for your feet and joints walking around barefoot as my heels are always killing me. A carpeted floor or even wood floor is so much softer to walk on but no one does those here. Also sealing concrete roofs from water is something every single neighbor of mine struggles with year after year. You kind of just get used to having water leaks in your house. Why the engineers here don't pitch the entire roof, I have no idea. But having dealt with termites in a previous wood framed home, that fear isn't with me here in PR. -P
