In this video I'll show you how to remove flicker from your footage in Premiere Pro without using plugins.
Sometimes we're just looking for a quick and easy fix to problems like these. We just want to correct the issue and get back to making videos!

@@DominicKrupp I was given b-roll (that I HAD to use) for a project. And this B-roll was some OLD footage. It musta been transferred over from VHS at some point. And IN the B-roll they are filming an old CRT monitor. And what was on the monitor was very important for the info in this project. And man o man. The flicker was real. This nifty little trick cleared it up incredibly well.

The same holds true in photography irrespective of a chosen camera brand and format. I've been there and until the right technology is put out in the wild, we just have to put up with the inherent limitations of current camera shutter design. Likewise, the dilemma of shooting in silent mode as per required by the client and venue is second to none. Keep up the good work buddy.

I like how you explained it. with my footage I had to put 5 layers and it worked as you said it must be slow-motion, but I got a question is there a way to remove flickering for a normal moving speed video

I had some pretty bad flicker in one of my shots, and found that if I duplicate this process (2 clips at 50% opacity and each clip 1 frame forward from the clip below it) then it illiminated the flicker completely. a single clip above the original footage just wasnt enough

Thanks for sharing this in the comments. I also have a clip with very bad flicker and following your lead I ended up getting the best result with 4 extra clips on top of the original one. With the tip in the video I could see no difference. It's still not perfect but now it's usable.

The slip tool doesn’t actually move the clip, it just shifting what part of the video within you’re seeing within that clip. Let me know if that answers your question!

Yes, the slip tool in premiere is the trim tool in fcpx. It cut out most of the banding but of course didn't work with my clip because of all the movement but thank you so much.

great tutorial, i used this to get rid of some flicker on a gopro timelpase. it got rid of the flicker, but i am now left with some slight ghosting in the footage. is there any way to combat this?

Nice Tutorial.... any advice on how to move the slip tool 1 or 2 frames.....im struggling on micro moves and ending up with a big blurry mess

If you zoom into the timeline you can have dinner control over the slip tool. You can see how many frame you are skipping the clip by looking at the timecode that appears next to your cursor when you start to slip the clip. Let me know if that helps!

Awesome tutorial! One question, when I shift the split tool to the right or left, it does not moving anywhere and stays on 00:00. Why is this happening?

Thank you! The reason for that is probably because the video is not trimmed at all. You need to cut at least a few frames off the beginning and the end of the clip in order to perform the slip. Let me know if that doesn’t make any sense!

hey, That's a great one. It worked on some of my previous footages but doesn't work on the one I have here... Any advice? changing sequence frequency or other things? I lighted up a mobile sculpture in the dark with 3 LED flashlights. That maybe why it's flickering a lot... Cheers

Hey, thanks for stopping by. I'm not really sure what the issue is, it could be a host of things from unseen light that may be casting on your subject to a shutter speed that just doesn't cooperate... I don't think it's the LEDs because usually LED lights don't have any issues with flickering. If it's slow motion footage I would try just using it at the normal speed then try this technique on it. Sorry I couldn't be of more help...

I had the same problem with 2 LED lights while filming a drawing video. I just tried this method, but there's a small trail when my hands move, and there's still a mild flicker. I'll just have to refilm. Lesson learned!

Thanks for watching! The reason it may not be working could be several things. The most common issue I've seen is when people try to use this method when their clip was recorded with a variable shutter speed. If this is the case, this technique will not work, unfortunately

This is great! Though..the slip tool won't let me move the footage at all. So I'm having to move it with the regular cursor. Any idea what I could be doing wrong?

A lot of times this happens when the clip is not cut at all. The slip tool can only function if there is more of the clip to the left or right, otherwise it’ll just remain the same. Let me know if that’s clear!

Thank you! If there is a lot of motion in the scene, yes. This is because you're basically creating a delay in the overlaying video. With this technique you just have to make the decision if you want flickering footage or blurry footage.

This doesn't work for me. Once I click Y and try to move the track left or right like here, nothing happens. I don't see +1 or -1 frame while trying to move it around :(

Instead of using the slip too you can also just move the top clip over a frame then trim and extend the ends accordingly. Let me know if that helps!

Does your shot need to be in slow motion? Sometimes you can change the speed of the clip to get rid of the flicker in slow motion footage.

like you said - does not work with high speed objects, which are normaly in the picture when you shoot high speed p Maybe there is a process to eleminate this beforehand, by altering the shutter-speed

The best solution to the flickering problem would be to just eliminate the lights that are causing the flicking begin with. If that isn't an option, however, the only other thing I've found that works is lowering your shutter speed as low as you can go without the footage looking "smeary". I hope this helps!

All the videos for remove flicker that doesn't involve a plug in all have the same solution: Duplicate, move 1-2 frames, change opacity of upper layers. Unfortunately, these methods, including the third-party plugins don't work on automotive LED tailights/parking lights.

i sped up the footage to 120% and it removed my flicker from 60fps footage. i noticed flicker got worse in slow mo but cleared up when i sped it up. The method in this video sorta works but i still got a weird strobe.

I am in dire need of your help.. How do you fix flickers that appears after you render? So it's not because of the original footage, but I found that when I remove the Lumetri Color the flickers are gone. Thanks so much.

Thanks for reaching out! It sounds like it might be an issue with your GPU. What kind of machine are you editing on? If it's a PC I would recommend updating your graphics drivers then trying again. If that doesn't work, try rendering after switching to "software only" in the project settings. This will take a while but if the render is flicker free it could point to an issue with your GPU 👍🏻 let me know if that works!
