I'm a 13 year old girl and I did this to my room all by myself. It wasn't hard. The difference though is it was concrete under the carpet, and there were nails instead of staples which made it easy for me. I am studying to be an interior designer and a architect. My first project will be my own home. I have to go to Lowe's and decide what I should use for the floor.🖌💼💳📅📌🛠🏘 (random emojis😂)

I almost had same thing lol beautiful old wood floor, I had to sand my ass off.., it had some staining from liquids, so , I picked a darker stain to match the stains..then polyurethane the hell out of it. I left the nails and nail holes for character. The house was over 100 years old. I'm ALOT older but my first project.i did..

Hey, I'm a 63yr old woman in SW England - just about to get my living room redecorated and new carpet, first time in 20 years. Big upheaval needing lots of effort shifting book cases, furniture etc. The carpet estimator came yesterday, they can remove the carpet but will charge me and your video has inspired me to do it myself. I'd already had a little peep under the corner of the carpet and sussed out what I needed to do. It's a gross, manky carpet and needs to go. I'm gonna be the one who takes it out and away, ready for the nice new one coming soon. Cheaper than moving house lol. Thanks for your inspiration.
@CatherineMartin-kz7cp
@CatherineMartin-kz7cp 7 дней назад
I'm also in SW England (Dartmouth) Just out of curiosity, Is it expensive if they rip the carpet up and do they take it with them?
@Tippsy561
@Tippsy561 6 дней назад
@@CatherineMartin-kz7cp On an £1800 new carpet estimate, I was quoted around £80 for carpet/underlay removal and disposal & yes, they do take it away. I've now taken up the old carpet & underlay which was quick and quite easy if you use a Stanley knife to cut it into strips about 120cm wide. The rolls fitted into the back of my car with the seats down and I took them to the local recycling centre. The worst bit by far is getting the gripper rods up round the edges - esp as they were hammered into a concrete floor. Be very careful of your eyes (wear protection) and your hands too.
@echanos
@echanos 9 лет назад
It's a really good idea to wear eye protection and long sleeves during this process. Have a relative who got some padding in her eye and ended up in the emergency room with nasty results. Also a buddy and I got an itchy reaction from skin contact with the padding during removal. Bad stuff.

Home Depot calls it a "industrial floor scraper" and it's truly a lifesaver. It will yank out a majority of the staples. The few staples it doesn't catch, you can go back and pull manually with pliers. Try to scrape WITH the wood grain so you don't take chunks out of your sub floor.

Its amazing how many things I have either learned or saved timed doing after just one or two video's. This was one of them. The tip to start in the corner was great as the carpet I was removed was significantly thicker and heavier than I expected and despite my planning on doing sections, by removing the corner of my chosing and then taking it from there, gave me complete freedom to complete this task very efficiently. As for the staples, I used up using a spade shovel and saved a lot of time although I was shocked as how many I kept finding thereafter. Thank you for sharing!

If you're a DIYer, if you have a hoe (garden tool, not a reference to another human), that works great to scrape up staples. I myself am a contractor and have a stand up scraper, if you're not opposed to spending $30 on one, that's the way to go. Also, no need to fold your carpet over, 95% of the time you can just release it from the tackstrip around the entire perimeter and cut the top of the carpet into strips. The only time you will have diffuculty cutting through the top is if you're carpet is so old it is saturated with dirt, or you didn't vacuum first, which I recommend doing.

I just used this today as a guide to tear out the carpet from one of the bedrooms in the house. The washer machine is on the other side of the wall and the tube was leaking and cause water to get through the wall and a good piece of the carpet. It’s a manufactured home and there’s no drywall and i saw it on time to avoid mold but had to tear out all the padding and carpet. I’ve been wanting to take it out anyway, I can’t stand carpet in a bedroom. It’s 2023. Parquet and a rug if you really desire that carpet feeling. Edit: almost forgot to say THANK YOU !! 😂 don’t know if you still have access to this channel but I appreciate you

Installing carpet is more work than you originally imagined. "Saving money" comes after proper removal and disposal of waste. And waste comes in loads. Be ready. The bill can be huge. Take time to evaluate the cost and benefit of having a company do the work, you can save a lot of time/money doing the work yourself. It's rewarding too

Newsflash: if you buy a new house, usually built by contractors or commercial builders, anything that wasn't built for "yourself", it will have substandard EVERYTHING! Corners will have been cut everywhere. Sure, it'll look nice but you'll soon be redoing everything. This is how houses with carpet came about. No sane person with even modest mental faculties would install carpet in their own house. Carpet is an abomination :-) Or aluminum wiring. Or substandard electric panels, etc. Codes won't save you from everything.

I use a medium size spackle tool to get under those hard to grab staples. And I use the same spackle trowel or whatever it's called to get under the carpet tack, followed by a flathead screwdriver to pry each section up. It's a lot easier than trying to hammer a crowbar underneath!

Good tips on carpet removal. I tell my customers to screw down the floor squeaks with two inch drywall or deck screws. Nails tend to slide up and down over time. I am 69 years old and rent an old farmhouse. I caused a patch in the hallway to rot the carpet (its a long story.) I bought some good unused carpet at a place where you buy all kinds of junk. I want to rip up the whole of the ruined carpet area (about 6 feet x 4 feet) and replace it. I cannot understand though why would one need to rip up the underlay if one is going to lay new carpet on it? I am not in the pink of health and the whole thing is daunting to me. I have no one to help me, but I think I may be able to borrow the tools and get the job done. Thanks for your clear advice.

I’m planing to rip out the carpet and install new laminate flooring. What should I do with the base boards?
@HomeRepairTutor
@HomeRepairTutor 4 года назад
you can keep the baseboards in place and space the laminate accordingly, e.g. leave 1/4" gap between laminate and baseboards. BUT read the laminate directions for specific spacing. Then you can cover that space with shoe molding, e.g. quarter round or smaller.

I use old rope to tie stuff up, my heart wept at all the duck tape used so generously. That's the fancy stuff I save for repairs and such.

I like the duct tape idea, cause I have spent so much time tying and re-tightening heavy twine. Old clothes line would work,too.

I've used a cordless angle grinder to cut away the staples. A simple, quick touch of the spinning wheel was plenty to eliminate each staple from the surface. It left some scars on the subfloor, but nothing that would affect the subsequent installation of flooring.

sunny sunshinee Well the point is to tear stuff up. Putting the new carpet on, Maybe get some help or a pro. It's not that hard, but it's pretty easy to mess up on the cutting.
@DowntownFarmerBrown1
@DowntownFarmerBrown1 6 лет назад
That's the fun part is messing up. Then you learn from the mistakes. I have taken the carpet out of my kitchen, bathroom, laundry room and a small walk in closet. For some reason the previous owner carpeted the entire house and with my two boys those areas had to go. Lamite floors were way easier to clean. I did most of it with out my husband's help while he was at work. It's just getting over that fear of failure or not looking good. I started my carpet riping up in the small walk in closet. It helped boost my confidence to do the bigger rooms. Plus it's cheaper to fix a small room than a larger room if do make mistakes cutting. Have a great day 🙂
