I couldn't wait on amazon for the socket so I bought a 4 prong one from the auto parts store and cut two of the prongs off with a grind wheel. Worked like a charm

For everyone who is going to DIY bearings, When packing bearing with grease you actually need to pack them, manually press grease into the bearing or get a tool to push grease into the bearing. Otherwise your bearing life will be short lived.
@rickykingi5191

Yep I got shown how to do that from a mechanically minded friend of mine.. lucky cos I would never have known 👍

Good video. I got it even though there wasn't any talkthrough. My Xterra is 13 years old. Alignment shop told me I had too much end play. I kept reseating the bearings but in the end figured at 135k miles with lots of it being off road miles, the bearings and race may be worn out even though they looked and sounded good. Replaced the races and bearings yesterday. I watched this video for the preloading of the new bearings. I gotta go get the tool now.

I am not the best,but if I packed my bearings like that I would be digging my truck out of the ditch after the wheel flew off. Not only did he not even repack the inner bearing he forgot the snap ring that holds the axle in. Just smearing grease on a bearing is not packing it, you have to force it between the rollers and the cage.
@erik3423
@erik3423 7 лет назад
Yeah the bearing packing was bad, but he is the first guy on youtube who actually pre loads the bearing like you're supposed to.
@spaghettimonstersjudgingyo504
@spaghettimonstersjudgingyo504 4 года назад
@@erik3423 I'm doing my wheel bearings tomorrow. Do I really need to pre loads the bearing or can I skip it? Don't have the scale. My dad never did and his repairs always lasted fine. I figure the torque wrench ensures proper tension on the bearing and the scale is to ensure the bearings are rolling fine before you put everything back together. Basically the pre tension check has more to do with mileage than anything but idk or I wouldn't be asking.
@erik3423
@erik3423 4 года назад
@@spaghettimonstersjudgingyo504 Preloading is done to eliminate play, if the bearing isn't seated just right you risk premature failure. That being said I've seen plenty of guys do this job without the tool and have no problems. If it was me though, I would spend the 20 bucks on the tool and do the job the way it was intended to be done. Again you'll probably be fine if you don't, just check the wheel at the 12 and 6 position after you're done for that death wobble.
@spaghettimonstersjudgingyo504
@spaghettimonstersjudgingyo504 4 года назад
@@erik3423 I replaced the left yesterday and I'm doing the right today. Skipped the bearing preload but I did check for play. It was fine when jacked up and I drove around a bit afterward making a bunch of right turns from a main road on to a side road to see if any looseness in the bearing would show up. It was fine. We have gutters on the side of main roads in AZ like reverse speed bumps. They put a lot of force or your wheel if your turning and hit them so I figured it would be a good way to see if there was any slop. My neighbor also looked at me like I was kind mental when I was making sharp left right turns driving down our street. They're weird people anyway so whatever. Also did the 6 and 12 thing. Honestly I didn't even know about that but it just seemed common sense. Replace a bearing, make sure it's seated properly. Thanks for getting back to me about that though. I had never heard of doing that preload step before.

Thanks bud, probably best bet is to grab a copy of the electronic manual from the link above as I had to leave out alot of the preload procedure due to time constraints. The manual has pictures and explains clearly how to do it.

I have looked and looked for a wheel hub that resembles mine and yours is it! Can you tell me, if you wanted to change the lugs on the hub, would you be able to simply unbolt the front of the hub by loosening the 6 bolts that are positioned between the lugs and remove the front part of the hub to get the lugs out? Reason i ask is i tried loosening them a bit but they didn't seem to rotate normally, maybe because they have locktite on them or maybe for some other reason. After about half a turn I chickened out and rotated the bolt back to its original position when i felt it wasnt loosening as expected. I hope i made myself understandable.

after you remove the manuel hub, you take off another "thing" with spines and locking clip. does that thing belong to the manuel hub? because i have a navara 01 witout any hubs and that thing you remove. gonna buy new hubs for it but dont know what that is, if it comes with the hubs or?? sorry for bad englisch

I have 31 X 10.5 15 on mine and have 275k now and the bearings have been replaced twice with no damage. The tall rims will probably damage your steering though. About to do my third bearing replacement tomorrow. Just because it's time more than anything. The steering system on the pre 2004 Frontiers suck balls.

Instead of making or buying the tool, is it not possible to use two phillips head screwdrivers and place them in the locking nut and then another bar between them to tighten the locking nut.

everyone skips the part I need.... how the heck do you get that outer wheel bearing to set in the hub?????? I can't get it to go inside the hub for the life of me
@Yippa72
@Yippa72 2 года назад
I used the old bearing to carefully tap in just enough to grab the thread then tighten to 60-70 ft/pounds to set the bearing preload then back off to 0/ft pounds then finally tighten to 13 ft/pounds PS: keep spinning the hub left and right as you tighten to set bearing evenly

@aaronsnav

your best bet is to clean all the old grease as it’ll have grit in the grease over time it’ll just shorten your new bearings life and it is always good to chuck new grease into every that needs it every now and then

hi can you please tell me what is the name of that bearing you removed from the axle
@gmmarin75
@gmmarin75 8 лет назад
radha rampersad Which bearing? That hub should have 2. The first one you'll come to is the outer wheel bearing. If you replace the wheel bearing with a brand new one then you should replace the race on the inside of the hub. On the other side of the hub there's the inner wheel bearing, race and a metal and rubber oil seal that prevents muck from getting inside. The bearings are a tapered style. I have an Xterra and this is a similar bearing set up. I hope that helps a little.
@gmmarin75
@gmmarin75 8 лет назад
radha rampersad You'll see the outer wheel bearing at 4:55. He's greasing and reinstalling it. Then the lock washer is screwed on to spec. He used a tool to seat the bearing. Seating the bearing correctly hopefully prevents play in the bearings, which can lead to all sorts of driving, handling, and breaking issues.
