0000 steel wool and 30w MOTOR OIL. Hoppes does not lubricate. Been doing this since the 50s and it worked 100% of the time

How about atf? It’s got lubricity and detergents

@@invisible.spectra5809 Good call on the ATF. As an auto tech and a gun collector I recommend ATF for oiling all sorts of stuff around the house and car, including guns.

Could you just add a few coats of cold blueing to that and give it a refinish from that point or would you have to go ahead and remove all the blueing that is left?
@edsgunsmithing3098
@edsgunsmithing3098 3 года назад
You could. But you would need to experiment with different blues to get it to match. One maybe Oxpho Blue, and the another might be 44/40 instant blue. Or Birchwood Casey Super Black.

Why blued surface rust? Shouldn't bluing prevent rust? I too had some rust on blued surface...

Is this more effective than boiling it, and then carding off the rust?

Could you apply a acid solution to remove oxidation on a blued barrel?
@edsgunsmithing3098
@edsgunsmithing3098 2 года назад
Yeah, you could. But, if it is too acidic it may attack it too quickly and cause other issues. So in the end I would say no. And the damage it could cause you.

Motor Oil works good too
@TheSharkGirls
@TheSharkGirls Год назад
There is a better method which only requires a soft cloth or paper towel & an Australian invention. The orange rusty steel or iron oxide just wipes off and no other metal or bluing is lost. You don't even need to wear gloves, its not acidic so just oil it afterwards, . Scratching the rust off is a definite no-no.

I have a Mossberg Maverick 88 ,and I went to inspect the gun and notice a brownish tint to the barrel. I applied some hoppes9 and a fine 3 m pad ,and the brownish substance doesn't seem to be disappearing even though the barrel doesn't seem rusted anymore. Am I rubbing the bluing off? It did seem to rub off only around the welds of the barrel screw mount. Starting not to like blued Shotguns.
@edsgunsmithing3098
@edsgunsmithing3098 6 лет назад
What you have is browning or patina. The blueing is gone and the rust has taken over. On most firearms, it looks just fine if the browning is even and lightly oiled.

WHat do you suggest as a protectant for storing guns?
@billmelater6470

Oil. Most anything will work, but I like CLP. I also recommend something called a Bore Store. Look them up, they are fantastic!

Storing in a gun sock helps prevent rust.
@billmelater6470
@billmelater6470 4 года назад
@@xk1119 Be careful though becasue regular gun socks can also cause rust just like if you store a gun in the case. Any moisure inside is trapped inside. Gun socks also don't repel moisure. I should declare that I'm not paid to say this, but bore stores are specifically made for rust prevention and storeage. I've got a lot of surplus rifles I trust them with. Not to mention that they are thick enough that you can stack your safe or cabinet deep without fear of scratches or dings.

Renaissance wax is the absolute best. This is what they use in museums but is also more effective than oil on concealed firearms where body sweat causes wear and corrosion/rust.

Does color painting spray protects my gun from rusting again?
@billmelater6470
@billmelater6470 4 года назад
I know this comment is 4 months old but if I can help anyone else or you, I think it's still worth an answer. Yes. A good paint is actually a far better way to protect your gun. Cerakote is fantastic and Duracoat works if you can't cerakote or don't want to pay to have it done. Bluing isn't bad, but it does need more attention than paint. HOWEVER, you still need to completely clean the gun of rust before refinishing a gun no matter what you do. Do not just paint over rust or a blued surface. Prep your surface properly.
@felixthecat265
@felixthecat265 5 лет назад
Rubbing Hoppes on is not going to replace or restore any blue. You would be better carding off the flake and then boiling the metal to reset the rust back to blue. You then need to card the surface with a fine carding brush. You can also steam the barrel in a drain pipe over boiling water.. works just as well as boiling.. You then need to oil the metal with plain oil.. not gun cleaner which will actually destroy the blue, and then let the blue cure for a few days..
