How to Remove Seized Seatpost? (The Uncommon Attempt)

Bought this Kona Muni Mula with seized seatpost, the previous owner tried to remove it but without success. I used the uncommon way to remove it with a quill stem and handlebar.
Make sure to put grease on the new seatpost and inside the frame upon the installation

Very good lateral thinking. There are also stems for 1-1/8" steering tubes which might help with larger diameter steat posts.

Noice. A quilly puller is a great idea. Love that cable routing. All my bikes have it ... even the ones that don't have it.

It musta felt so good getting it right. Right now im currently at the opening image. The rod is below the frame level by just a hair.. i been thinkin about it all night

@@jonahwhale9047 I just checked my receipt from toolstation for you. It is a HSS Blacksmith Drill Bit 22mm. It worked for me with the quill stem I had. Good luck.

I recently got ahold of a 1993 Kona Cinder Cone frame as with yours it seems the previous owner attempted to remove it as it is probaby about 3\4 of the way out but jammed in tight, iam going to try this method wish me luck.

I have a stuck alloy seatpost in a cro mo GT frame. It is right in the frame with none sticking out to hold onto and the top seat connector has pulled out so I was looking at this very trick this morning. Unfortunately my seat post is 27.2mm that does not allow a quill stem to go inside. So I have ordered a sleeve anchor that is used for bolting heavy stuff into walls. An M16 size has a 20mm external diameter that should fit just fine. If that doesn't work then it will be the old hacksaw trick to cut segments out.

@@ThisTimeTheWorld That's another good idea. I was thinking that the problem with the hack above, & the expansion bolt idea, is that it will also expand the seat post too, increase the friction. Perhaps adding some grinding paste to them might help add grip without needing a lot of outward pressure?

I have tried this, sadly it didn't work at all. This really depends on how ruddy stuck your post is. Good luck to anyone attempting this challenge. I'd be REALLY cautious about trying caustic soda- it can make a massive, dangerous mess.

@@romanmentor9238 Cause? Our dear, sweet friends in China cutting corners by assembling cheap bikes without using any grease or lubrication!!! Truth be, if you buy a bike, the first thing you should do is strip it to bits & grease everything. It's true even of brand names. Ask me how I know ....

You learn to do it yourself. It might take hours & days to leave while you soak it with release oils etc, so paying a bike shop to do so would cost a fortune.

That wasn't truly stuck ! Only a combination of an Aluminium seatpost in a Steel frame will give you true Galvanic Corrosion.

In such circumstances, does filling the seat tube with caustic soda solution work, e.g. sodium bicarbonate? Vicious stuff but it should eat away the alu alloy while leaving the steel alone.
