Thank you for sharing this. It's been 43 years since I've done a roof on a cabin. I'm attempting to replace shingles on my shed, but the pitch is pretty bad for a 62 year old with artificial joints, but the roofer from Church was quoting way too high so I needed a lesson in doing all of it. Hopefully, I can get my busy son to help me. I like that removal tool. When I succeed I will save $2500 and have a ladder and tool I can still sell before we move and rent this house out.
Thank you for posting the videos that you do. You have inspired me to do my own roof on the garage. ...I have learned so much from your videos. Thanks again!!!!
Seen a few of these roofing vids and very rarely do people show them starting the tear-off of the first rows. Tearing off the field is pretty easy to understand, how to efficiently start the edge without scaffolding either from the roof or a ladder is what I would like to see.
I enjoyed the video! When I was young I would have gotten up on a roof and jump from it and jumped from roof to roof as they were that close... . Today; Nada... :) But with that said; I'm finishing up on a new tile floor in the upstairs bathroom; cabinetry and a granite sink base. Your advice here is priceless... Thanks...
Had my roof replaced last year. Those guys just removed them by hand, stacked them, and then put the stacks on the top of their head to take them to the dumpster. Pretty impressive.
For those saying why is there no ice and water shield, it is because it wasn't code back then and it cost more so guys didn't use it. Furthermore as a journeyman roofer all aspects of your roof should be replaced 100% cause you can't guarantee ever they will make it to the next re roof and careful when walking on felt paper on the roof, have seen a couple people fall off the roof doing that
I tried all kinds of “shingle shovels” and I always came back to my old t handle spade shovel. If you have laid shingles before it helps you understand where the nails are and how to tear them off. If they are on plywood and not crumbling you can remove them quickly without leaving any nails or debris behind. Old board decking is another animal, steep roofs are easier to clean as you go.
The concept, as I understand it, is that one asks the favour of friends to help during the project. The treats such as beer and/or pizza would be consumed during the completion of the task, or having reached a certain stage of the project that would warrant a "break" period.
@@arctichare8185 I usually just pay them. I find it very rude and wicked to ask for someone to spend hours of their time without getting paid. I'm a businessman, not a slaver. But, the pizza is a good idea, too. Food puts everyone in a better mood. Music is another one. I had someone install flooring for a house, and he needed his music.
+Levi Thomas we have a bunch of shingle videos coming out in the next few weeks so subscribe and stay tuned. We cover pretty much everything you will need to know.
The shovel tip will be very helpful on my 150 year old house. Trash bags and my old van is my cleanup plan since the local dumpster guy doesnt like delivering in my neighborhood.
About the cost- in Calif, roofing contractors are required to pay for worker’s comp insurance. The last time I checked, my insurance cost the same as the wages. That sends costs up.
Shannon, this is why I subscribed to your channel. You are such a wonderful teacher. I just finished watching this roofing series. Thank you again for generously sharing your knowledge.
How much would it cost to replace my roof if I could hire 10 guys like this guy? You don't find this type of attention to detail anymore because roofing companies would go out of business. Nice work man!
It would cost more than it's worth. In the old days if a crew was slow then yeah probably good quality works. Today, with advancements in tools, if a crew is slow then they have no idea what they are doing. Fire immediately. 👍
We have 2 to 3 days to get a roof done or our boss would fire us if we took longer any size pretty much but to be honest me and 5 other guys get it done and are on to the next one really hard keeping that going for a couple weeks but cant beat the money at the end
Have you ever tried prying up shingles from the bottom corner of the roof and then rolling the whole thing up like carpet? If you have tar paper that works. Of course, you can't roll the whole roof at once but it pulls up all the nails etc with it. I stripped my entire 22 square roof myself in less than 2 hours. That shovel was important to getting each roll started. Anyways, I love the videos, I donated on your site, I'll donate more as I watch videos.
Chad D been doing this for a year and I do the same. Start at the bottom corner and pull up 4 courses at at time, hands down easiest, fastest way to get that tear off expedited. Aloha from hawaiii
There is too many critics that don't seem to realize that this is for the DIYers and not a full time production crew. I started from the bottom so that I could shingle then seal it up between the old and new on rain days. The scaffold is a great idea, I set the boards at three levels to make getting up and down so much easier than a ladder and it made getting the bundles up there much safer.
@@robertalan4717 well, what I was meaning is easier or faster or better in anyway. I roofed for 18 yrs so to me this is laziness. Not to mention most men should have most of that side, "really all of", tore off by the time they can set this contraption up and get started. Roofing is not hard, just have to be a man about it, that's all.
@@imnotgood15aka.notgood21 See I'm not a roofer, I'm a tree worker, having spent 15+ years removing and deadwooding sometimes huge, like 120X100ft oak trees. Years spent working within feet of 4000-40,000volt hydro lines. Sometimes I would bend a branch down into the line to hear it sizzle like bacon. But I'm older now and I'm going to do things the easy safe way and it only takes 10 minutes to set up a scaffold with wheels that I can move along the eaves. Being a climber/trimmer I can easily climb up and down the boards. There's really no rush. A safe good job is priority. Yes I have respect for roofers. They have to deal with extreme heat and cold and heights. It is one of the most difficult jobs. Cheers.
@@robertalan4717 I agree, but you can't tell me that those scaffolds are safer than screwing a harness at the ridge and wearing it. This guy slips he falls. I slip no scaffolds and still don't fall. Takes two minutes to screw 3 screws at ridge and throw harness on. Bet you can't set scaffolding 2to3 scaffolds high all the around this house in less than 30 minutes, by that time Ill have half the roof off and you will just be getting started. Then not only will I be done long before you but you have to take all that scaffolding down. I'll be faster, safer and do less work. Cheers. 🥃
I usually go under the shingle below the lead flashing and it releases the nails in the lead pipe flashing easier ! Its good idea to tarp below the gutter lines for easier clean up too . Its been 18 years since I did a tear off!
I just bought one that looks totally different, it has an edge on it that looks like a dog hair trimmer. After watching this I think I should go back and exchange
Great timing! I need to re-roof my garage this summer. Never done this type of work before, so a garage seems like a great place to start. Can't wait to see the roof go back on.
+keifsanderson perfect, please keep watching for them. Also please click the "thumbs up " symbol under the video to help our rating if you like what you watched
Hey Shannon, I just wanted to say thank you for putting together these great DYI roofing series! I had a quick question for you, would you recommend stripping the shingles off and leaving the roof bare under tarp for a few days in between if you have the spare time? Or would you recommend just waiting for a patch of cloudy/sunny days to do it all at once? Thanks again Shannon!
You can tarp it up , but be sure your tarps are well secured incase a wind or storm comes up. I normally would strip one side and then shingle that side leaving the rest of the home covered up. Or you can even strip off as much as you think you can do on a side , install the new shingles to that point and strip some more again to keep going. Either way you want to have some tarps available incase a storm comes up.
I am getting rid of my shingles on the roof and going to install metal in place. Do you have any videos showing this process? Thanks for the excellent tips. I'm sure for you it is very basic but for us it is an education.
I am a homeowner with a 2-story roof. With that in mind, would you please do a video on how I could use safety equipment to re-roof the 2-story. Please include a section on using roof jacks.
Safest way is to hire a licensed roofer, just ask a few actual construction workers, not contractors, who they would recommend. That's the safest. Anybody that ask for payment before completion instantly remove from options, people who do the job before they receive payment always do better work and have more pride because they believe their work will speak for itself when time to collect. But you can do yourself, just make sure Jack's are nailed in rafter so they don't pull out, and when you nail on make sure when you nail shingles over them the break don't fall where Jack's were. When your done just lift shingle drive nails down, tar over nailheads and nail shingle down. To be really safe you can buy harness and harness off but hell, who doesn't wanna live on the edge a little. Enjoy 😗
hi Shannon great videos....you helped me install my garage doors. My question...do you have to remove any and all staples remaining? or can you just tap them down with a hammer ? Thanks
+binnsh Good ideas. I forgot to mention in the video that if there is lawn around the house I like to roll out some tarps to catch the debris that hits the ground , much easier than trying to clean it out of the lawn.
Good info. Didn't know they made a special shovel for this. Stacking the old shingles seems kinda silly tho. Why not use the shovel to chuck it off the roof and clean up at ground level? Also, why are so many people shitting on this video in the comments? Roofers who are pissed that people know how easy a re-roof is now?
Coder1024 : by chucking them off the house, you get a lot more nails and pieces you then have to clean up on the ground level. A good roofer will try to keep the yard, decks, etc. clean to save time.
Less trips to edge of roof if you get a bit of a pile to take each time. I strip right into a trailer if possible or drop onto a large tarp on ground if I cant get trailer close enough.
Top for me man!...and knee pads!...lol!...you and zack from veteran construction, don't use knee pads!?...y'all have the best roofing vids on RU-vid, but DAYUM! my knees would be raw dude!
I just replaced my shingles with my dad and a friend. The old shingles had about 10 staples in each one. We pulled staples for 2 days, completely killed any momentum we though we would have.
if your right handed you start in top right ALWAYS! (unless it was nailed left handed then it gets interesting) find the god 2 shingle pattern then pop all nails repeat till roof is ripped. Some people do a 3 shingle rip starting in same spot i only seen 1 guy in my 10 year career do this. Exceptions if its hot and sticky and the seal isent breaking, square out a nice section with your ripper and roll it up getting all nails. (This sucks but happens usually when you rip in afternoon and dont get there at 7 AM) should have everything you are going to rip for the day done by 10-11 AM
Another Excellent video, Shannon! Thanks for sharing and producing this video. I have an A-Frame roof with a 60 degree angle (off the horizontal) to tear off. The sub-roof is 1/2" OSB. Because of the 60 deg pitch, I'll have to use Roof Jacks as I work my way up the roof. Also, I expect the shingles will just slide off the roof by themselves once I've torn them off with the roofing shovel, so I'm just going to place an old pool cover on the ground to collect the torn shingles, nails, and other debris. Actually, I'm sure they'll get hung up on the 2x8 boards on my roof jacks. Any other suggestions on how to tear off a 30yr shingle from an A-Frame would be most appreciated. Thx!
Hello Shannon! Here's a question - a fellow told me once that it's a common thing to cut the Metric shingles to the size of the English ones (English are discontinued a long time ago). Have you ever had to do such a task? What would you recommend? Taking into consideration that this should be a guaranteed job not just a DIY. Thank you in advance for your answer and for your awesome videos!
HAY? I loved your instructions - watched a few vids of yours.. Need a simple advice... as a general matter.. We have some shingles carried away by STRONG WINDS! I estimate that the lost patches are about 20% of the whole area... As a general rule would you recommend replacing the WHOLE ROOF or just fixing the damaged areas?
patching will be fine ,you may find though that you can not get a perfect match most times so if that is an issue for you then you may want to do the entire thing. From run to run at the factory they can be slightly different in shade/color
difficult to say, depends on size of roof and access to removal and amount of help you have. A 1200 sq' roof with one layer may take a first time single person over 2 hrs possibly
If I strip a roof and then install the underlayment, how long can I wait before installing the new roof? I am doing my own garage roof with metal. I can't do it all in just one day. Probably be 2 weeks to complete. Should I use synthetic or just felt will do? Thanks!!
If you use felt you need to cover it right away or it will rip off in the wind. Some synthetics are better with wind for limited days. Check with manufactures recommendations.
@@HouseImprovements maybe I'll just strip the roof, put the underlayment down, then strap the roof in preparation for a metal roof. Then it should be fine for a while until I get the metal roof material.
Don't know if you still check this channel. But would it be acceptable to cut boards at halfway points on the joist I'd you need to replace them....I have the lumber styler roof like I this video vs pay wood. And a couple areas need to be replaced. With the price of wood currently I'd rather not replace the whole thing if not necessary....referring to the Sheathing of course...Wil be replacing all the shingles.
Awesome videos! I like your quality work. I'm looking at an older home that has thinner plywood across the rafters. I'm planning on replacing it with thicker (3/4 I think) would it be easier to just cut the plywood in sections from the inside vs. removing all the shingles nails then the plywood?
Not sure cutting from the inside would be very easy. You could cut from the top side but I would recomment removing the shingles and then plywood anyways.
Is it possible to remove half a roof of shingles in order to overlap new felt on pre-existing felt and to only do half of the roof with new shingles. Our roof was done like 10 years ago but recently had a pine tree fall and damage only a portion of our roof. I was hoping to only shingle half of the backside of the roof but will do it all if needed.
Good day, my friend. Great videos and work. Just a quik question. Would it be better to used paper #90 or shingles. Will be doing it my self and might be easier to install the #90 thanks God bless you and thanks for your help with this videos. Have a great day!!!
They are replacing the roof and plywood where I live. I can still see light from outside coming through plywood. They have gone home for the weekend. Is this ok or do I need to worry
Any good tips to find the right shingle MFG and maybe type of shingle composite that will out-perform the basic? We get a lot of strong summers in the 90-100 and even 110F peaks every year..then for winter we do get a few weeks or more of a good rain, some with storms, and strong winds, and often gets cold to the 40's and some rare time dip into freezing a couple days a year.
Works better with one above tearing off and one 3shingles in front catching and stacking on his feet till he has as much as he can carry then throws it in dumpster and start again. This is professional way, lays tarps just to catch rogue nail or 2, hittng every nail on way down because tearing a shingle a time off. I can tear one side of this roof off in 30 minutes just me and one man catching, if he has he stamina off course. Drags tarps to other side and tear it off, clean nails off tarp, roll it up and Walla, tear off done and ready to roof before the children have left the bus stop.
