I have a 2011 Highlander Limited and have not had to remove the spare tire. Thanks for the tutorial. I would have hunted for the lowering nut for a long time without your instructions.

Thank you for this video! I had no idea about any of these tools or how to use them. Too bad when I bought my Highlander, I was missing the spare tire socket so I couldn't even use the spare.

Excellent!! Thank you so much. Most, if not all guys in tire shops in my area don’t know this.

Peter, some people put the spare tire on wrong so they can easily get to the valve stem because they don’t know about the different ways to put air into it. Some of them are even mechanics that should know better.

Yeah, the reason has to be something like that alright 👍

The 12yr.-old original spare is ready for replacement, and the TPMS sensor in it probably is, too. The full-size spare came on all of the trim levels back then; we have a 2011 Highlander (Base-2.7liter, 2WD) w/225K miles on it, that’s still going strong.

Thanks Peter. I learned from you to check spare when the low tire pressure light illuminates.

I enjoyed the video but most of all the explanation of the valve stem access . That is easier to check the spare tire pressure than on my cars with the spare in the trunk.

I had a 1988 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck that had the spare tire up underneath the back and I had a flat tire amazing the original Tire still held air and I could take it out with the long crank rod lowering the cable.

Oh jesus! Youre pulling out a highlander at the perfect time, im having an issue with a shaky steering wheel when im braking. I have been told its the rotor that is warped. Would you have any other possibilities in mind before i go drop 200+ on rotors and brakes. 😭😭😭

Supposedly he doesn’t answer comments, doesn’t have time. Change your rotors with after market rotors but, get your pads from Toyota. If you have it done, it will cost $300 to $350.

ONLY when braking? Yes like Slalom said, rotors. If you are doing it yourself, you can take the rotors off and bring to someone to machine the rotors if they are OEM and within thickness minimums. If the pads are still good, you can take some sandpaper or emery cloth and wet sand the glaze off to match the new rotor surface. Use brake clean on all of it of course. That's if the pads are still usable.

Peter, flip the handle so it points up. Then you can spin it down faster

I guess the 2012s don't have the plastic cover over the spare underneath like the 01-07 YIKES, Road Salt Nightmare for the rim.

Thanks for the tutorial, I have the Hybrid model and can't figure out how to stow away the cargo cover because of the 12V battery in the trunk, does anyone else have the same problem? The manual does not help either.

Ugh on the side of the road at night tearing that apart to lower the tire. Geeeze. Keep a can of Fix A Flat handy but a blowout changes everything,

Hi Peter my Highlander has a plastic cover over the spare wheel to protect it. Is that missing on your customers one?

I wonder if that is an optional extra, pretty sure he would have mentioned that, definitely something he would have remarked on 👍

Maybe this is only fitted to New Zealand models. It is shown in the owners handbook.

I have a 2012 Toyota Highlander base model with 314,000.km. Nice to see that Califonia vehicle with little to no rust. I live in Nova Scotia so mine has a bit more rust. We use snow tires here so I usually lower my spare down twice a year to check out the tire and grease the lowering cable. Great video!

you never answered if youve done a video on replacing the bearings on a 2012 hilux, you liked my comment but gave no answer… DO YOU HAVE ANY VIDEOS ON A HILUX AT ALL? is that an easier question to answer

All these steps because Toyota wanted to make that stupid 3rd row seat for bratty kids. The spare should be inside the vehicle. Hey Toyota !! STOP making the Highlander a PEOPLE HAULER and make it a SPORTY SUV. The engineers at Toyota must have watched a Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner cartoon to come up with this idea. _Beep Beep_

Petr, With the exception of pickup trucks, I cannot see the point of an exposed spare carried beneath the car.. 🤨
